Chapter 2: What Noah Wouldn't Say
Daniel did not touch anyone again.
Not Vanessa.
Not Vivian.
Not even Noah.
He stood in the middle of the ruined patio while his son backed toward the glass doors.
"Noah," Daniel said quietly.
The boy shook his head.
Daniel swallowed.
"Okay.""
Every instinct inside him screamed to pick Noah up, carry him somewhere safe, and promise nobody would ever hurt him again.
But Noah had just told him he was afraid.
Daniel forced his arms to remain at his sides.
"You don't have to come near me," he said.
"Just go inside.""
Noah hesitated.
"Go to your room. Lock the door.""
That finally made the boy move.
He disappeared into the house.
Daniel waited until he heard the upstairs bedroom door close.
Then Vanessa spoke.
"You see?""
Daniel turned slowly.
She had climbed out of the overturned chairs.
Her hair was disheveled, frosting streaked across one cheek, but her expression had changed.
She was no longer furious.
She looked almost satisfied.
"You scared him," she said.
Daniel stared at her.
"You put a dog collar around his neck.""
"And you attacked two women in front of him.""
Vivian held up her phone again.
Daniel's eyes went directly to it.
Vivian smiled.
"I got most of it.""
The blood drained from Daniel's face.
Vanessa noticed.
"Exactly," she said.
Daniel looked from one sister to the other.
The scene suddenly felt different.
Calculated.
"Delete it.""
Vivian laughed.
"Absolutely not.""
"You recorded what she did to Noah.""
"I recorded you assaulting us.""
"You recorded everything?""
Vivian's smile weakened.
That was answer enough.
Daniel took one step forward.
Both women recoiled.
He stopped instantly.
The reaction hit him like cold water.
If he tried to take the phone now, the video could make him look exactly like what Vanessa wanted him to look like.
A violent husband.
An unstable father.
A threat.
Daniel backed away.
Vanessa's mouth curved upward.
"Good choice.""
He hated her in that moment.
But he hated himself too.
Because Noah's words kept repeating in his mind.
I'm scared of you too.
Daniel walked inside.
He found Noah's bedroom door locked.
"Noah?""
No answer.
Daniel sat on the floor outside.
For several minutes, he said nothing.
Finally, he spoke through the door.
"I'm not asking you to open this.""
Silence.
"I just need you to know something.""
Daniel rubbed his hands together.
He had spent most of his life believing a father should always know what to do.
His own father had certainly pretended to.
But Daniel had no idea what words could fix what Noah had witnessed.
"What Vanessa did was wrong," he said.
"What I did scared you. Both things can be true.""
Something moved behind the door.
Daniel continued.
"I wanted to protect you.""
His voice broke.
"But protecting you doesn't mean I get to lose control.""
No answer.
Daniel bowed his head.
"I'm sorry.""
After several seconds, he heard Noah's voice.
Very small.
"Dad?""
"I'm here.""
"Is she going to stay here?""
Daniel closed his eyes.
"No.""
The answer came immediately.
"No.""
There was another long pause.
Then Noah asked the question Daniel had been dreading.
"Are you going to jail?""
Daniel looked toward the staircase.
Downstairs, he could hear Vanessa and Vivian talking.
"I don't know.""
Noah began crying again.
Daniel pressed his palm against the door but did not knock.
"You don't have to worry about me right now," he said.
"I need you to worry about you.""
"But you're my dad.""
"I know.""
Daniel heard the lock turn.
The door opened three inches.
Noah appeared.
The red line around his neck looked darker now.
Daniel's jaw tightened.
He forced himself not to react.
Noah watched him carefully.
"Can I ask you something?"" Daniel said.
Noah nodded.
"Has Vanessa done something like this before?""
The boy's eyes dropped.
That frightened Daniel more than any answer could have.
"Noah.""
Silence.
"Son, look at me.""
Noah didn't.
Daniel felt his heart pounding.
"You won't get in trouble.""
Noah whispered, "She said you wouldn't believe me.""
Daniel went still.
"When?""
Noah's shoulders began shaking.
"She said you'd think I was trying to make you divorce her.""
Daniel felt the room tilt.
"What has she done?""
Noah stepped backward.
"I don't want to talk about it.""
"Okay.""
Daniel caught himself immediately.
"Okay. You don't have to.""
But now he knew.
Today had not been the beginning.
It was simply the first time he had walked in early enough to witness it.
Daniel's stomach twisted.
How many mornings had he kissed Noah goodbye without noticing?
How many dinners had his son eaten in silence?
How many times had Vanessa smiled across the table knowing Noah was too afraid to speak?
Daniel stood.
"I'm calling your Aunt Renee.""
Noah looked relieved.
Renee was Daniel's older sister and one of the few adults Noah trusted completely.
"I'm going to ask her to come stay with you.""
"Are you leaving?""
"I'm staying until she gets here.""
Daniel walked downstairs.
Vanessa was waiting in the living room.
Vivian sat beside her.
Both had cleaned themselves up.
Vanessa looked almost composed.
"I've called the police," she said.
Daniel stopped.
He had expected it.
Still, hearing the words made his chest tighten.
"Good.""
Vanessa blinked.
"Good?""
"Yes.""
Her confidence slipped.
Daniel pointed toward the patio.
"Because I want them to see Noah's neck.""
Vivian lowered her phone.
Vanessa stood.
"Daniel, think carefully.""
"I am.""
"If police come here, you're the one who'll be arrested.""
"Maybe.""
He held her gaze.
"But you're going to explain that collar.""
For the first time, Vanessa looked nervous.
Only for a second.
Then she smiled again.
"There's nothing to explain.""
Daniel studied her face.
"You've done this before.""
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
Daniel knew immediately.
Noah had told the truth.
"What did you do to him?""
Vanessa said nothing.
"What did you do?""
Vivian stood.
"Stop interrogating her.""
Daniel ignored her.
Vanessa finally folded her arms.
"You have no idea how difficult your son is when you're not here.""
Daniel felt something dark rise inside him again.
He clenched his fists.
Then looked at them.
At the hands Noah feared.
Slowly, deliberately, Daniel opened his fingers.
He would not give Vanessa what she wanted.
Not again.
Before he could answer, blue lights flashed through the front windows.
Noah appeared at the top of the staircase.
Daniel looked up at him.
May you like
Vanessa looked up too.
And Daniel realized the next few minutes might decide who Noah would be allowed to go home with.
