Chapter 9: The Voice on the Tape
The slam upstairs made everyone freeze.
Noah turned first.
“What was that?””
Daniel’s face emptied.
“No one else should be here.””
I looked at Gloria.
“Did you bring someone?””
She shook her head.
Rebecca’s voice dropped.
“Sarah?””
Daniel moved toward the stairs.
I caught his arm.
“You stay where I can see you.””
He yanked free.
“If that’s Sarah, she may be hurt.””
“And if it isn’t?””
He didn’t answer.
We climbed together.
Laura kept Emily behind her.
Noah stayed beside Rebecca.
Gloria moved slowly, one hand gripping the railing.
At the top of the stairs, a hallway stretched toward the back of the house.
One door swayed slightly.
Open.
Closed.
Open.
A draft, maybe.
Or someone had just gone through it.
Daniel whispered, “That used to be Eric’s room.””
Rebecca stopped.
“No.””
I turned.
“What?””
Her face had gone pale again.
“I remember this hallway.””
Noah touched her elbow.
“Mom?””
“I thought it was a dream.””
She stared at the door.
“A lamp with a red shade.””
Daniel looked at her.
“There was one.””
Rebecca’s breathing became shallow.
“And a cracked mirror.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“There was one of those too.””
She pressed both hands to her temples.
“I was here.””
Gloria started crying softly.
Rebecca spun toward her.
“You knew?””
“No.””
“Stop saying that!””
“I swear.””
I stepped toward the door.
“Everyone stay back.””
It creaked when I pushed it open.
The room was nearly empty.
An old bed frame.
A dresser.
Dust.
A cracked mirror still hung on the wall.
And beside it—
A red lampshade.
Rebecca made a broken sound behind me.
Then Noah whispered, “Someone’s here.””
A woman stood near the window.
Mid-thirties.
Dark hair cut to her shoulders.
Thin.
Soaked from the rain.
She held something against her chest.
Daniel stopped breathing.
“Sarah.””
The woman looked at him.
“Don’t come closer.””
Rebecca’s knees nearly buckled.
“Sarah?””
The woman’s face crumpled.
“Rebecca.””
For a second, neither moved.
Then Rebecca crossed the room.
Sarah backed away.
“I’m sorry.””
Rebecca stopped.
“What did you see?””
Sarah began sobbing.
“I’m sorry.””
“What did you see?””
“I should have taken you home.””
Rebecca’s voice cracked.
“Yes.””
“I was scared.””
“Yes.””
“Eric threatened my father.””
“Yes.””
Sarah covered her mouth.
Rebecca stared at her.
“No more excuses.””
Sarah nodded through tears.
“You’re right.””
The room fell silent.
Then Sarah held out what she had been clutching.
A small digital audio recorder.
Daniel whispered, “Is that it?””
She looked at him with hatred.
“You knew he made it.””
Daniel shook his head.
“I knew Eric recorded something before he died. I didn’t know what.””
Sarah turned to Rebecca.
“He mailed it to me twelve years ago.””
Rebecca stared.
“You had this for twelve years?””
“I couldn’t listen to it.””
“Then how do you know what’s on it?””
“I finally listened last month.””
Rebecca laughed bitterly.
“And that made you contact Daniel?””
“Yes.””
“Why him?””
“Because Eric named him.””
Daniel went white.
Noah stepped forward.
“What did he say?””
Sarah looked at the recorder.
“Everything.””
Gloria whispered, “Play it.””
Sarah shook her head.
Rebecca held out her hand.
“Give it to me.””
Sarah hesitated.
Then placed the recorder into her palm.
Rebecca stared down at it.
I moved closer.
“You don’t have to do this here.””
“Yes.””
Her voice was calm now.
Too calm.
“I do.””
She pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then a man’s voice.
Older than he had been that night.
Tired.
Afraid.
“My name is Eric Mercer.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
The recording continued.
“If Sarah Caldwell is hearing this, it means I never had the courage to say this to Rebecca myself.””
Rebecca gripped the recorder tighter.
Eric’s voice shook.
“On June twenty-eighth, seventeen years ago, I hurt Rebecca Dawson.””
No one moved.
“I knew she was not sober enough to understand what was happening.””
Rebecca shut her eyes.
Laura pulled Emily closer.
Noah stared at the floor.
Eric continued.
“Daniel did not hurt her.””
Daniel started crying.
“He carried her downstairs because I told him she was sick.””
Daniel whispered, “Oh God.””
“He left her outside the room. I told him to get water.””
Rebecca’s eyes opened.
Daniel stared at the recorder.
“That’s not how I remembered it.””
Sarah snapped, “Keep listening.””
Eric’s voice continued.
“I went into the room alone.””
Rebecca’s breathing stopped.
“I touched her without permission.””
The room became unbearable.
Eric went on.
“I stopped before things went further.””
Rebecca covered her mouth.
Noah looked at her.
She shook her head, crying silently.
Then Eric said something none of us expected.
“But that was not the worst thing that happened that night.””
I felt every muscle in my body tighten.
“My father found me outside the room.””
Daniel looked up.
“He knew immediately something had happened.””
Sarah began crying again.
“He told me to keep quiet.””
Eric’s voice broke.
“He called Sarah back.””
Sarah shut her eyes.
Rebecca stared at her.
Eric continued.
“My father told Sarah that if she spoke, her family would lose everything.””
Sarah whispered, “He knew about my dad’s debt.””
“He told Daniel to say Rebecca had been drunk.””
Daniel sank against the wall.
“He told everyone that.””
The recording crackled.
“And then Charles Bennett arrived.””
I stopped breathing.
Every eye turned toward my father.
Charles looked like the blood had been drained from his body.
“No,” he whispered.
The tape continued.
“Mr. Bennett had come looking for Michael.””
My father stared at the recorder.
“No.””
“He saw Rebecca unconscious.””
Rebecca turned slowly toward Charles.
Eric’s voice continued.
“He argued with my father.””
Charles shook his head.
“I didn’t know.””
But the tape did not stop.
“Mr. Bennett said he would call the police.””
My chest tightened.
For one second, hope flickered.
Then Eric continued.
“My father told him Rebecca was pregnant.””
Silence.
Impossible.
I looked at Rebecca.
She stared back.
“That can’t be right,” she whispered.
The party had happened before we knew.
Weeks before.
Eric’s voice continued.
“My father lied. He said Rebecca had already told him she was pregnant with Michael’s child.””
Charles whispered, “I believed him.””
I turned.
“You knew before I did?””
“No.””
“According to this, you did.””
“I thought Mercer was lying.””
The tape continued.
“My father told Mr. Bennett that if police got involved, Rebecca’s name would be dragged through court and Michael’s scholarship would disappear.””
My hands began shaking.
“He said everyone’s lives would be ruined.””
Charles closed his eyes.
Eric’s voice became quieter.
“Mr. Bennett left.””
I stared at my father.
“You left her there.””
He looked at me.
“I thought she was safe.””
Rebecca laughed through tears.
“Safe?””
“I saw Gloria arrive.””
Everyone turned toward Gloria.
She looked shattered.
Eric continued.
“Gloria Dawson came about twenty minutes later.””
Rebecca stared at her mother.
“No.””
Gloria whispered, “Rebecca…”
“You were there?””
“Yes.””
“You told me you picked me up from Sarah’s house the next morning.””
Gloria began crying.
“I lied.””
Eric’s voice filled the room again.
“She took Rebecca out through the side entrance.””
Rebecca looked sick.
“She knew something was wrong.””
Gloria covered her face.
“I knew enough.””
Rebecca’s voice dropped.
“And you did nothing.””
Gloria looked at her.
“I thought protecting your name was protecting you.””
“No.””
Rebecca shook her head.
“You protected yourself.””
The recorder crackled again.
Eric spoke.
“One week later, my father met with Charles Bennett and Gloria Dawson.””
My father whispered, “No.””
Gloria looked at him.
“You remember.””
Eric continued.
“They agreed that nothing about that night would ever be reported.””
I stared at my father.
“You made an agreement.””
He looked broken.
“Yes.””
Rebecca stepped backward.
“You both did.””
Neither answered.
Then Eric said the sentence that ended every remaining excuse.
“Daniel was paid to sign as Noah’s father months later because both families wanted a permanent wall between Michael and Rebecca.””
Noah stared at Daniel.
Daniel cried openly now.
Eric continued.
“But Noah was always Michael Bennett’s biological son.””
The room went silent except for rain against the windows.
“Noah’s paternity test was completed before the false papers were filed.””
I looked at Charles.
“You knew before the birth certificate?””
“Yes.””
My voice cracked.
“And still let Daniel sign?””
“Yes.””
Why?
The answer came from the recording.
“Mr. Bennett said if Michael learned his son survived, he would never stay away.””
My throat closed.
Eric’s voice softened.
“He was right.””
I looked at Noah.
My son stared back.
Seventeen years gone.
Because my father knew exactly what I would have done.
I would have stayed.
The recording continued.
“I helped destroy Rebecca’s trust in herself.””
Eric’s voice shook.
“I helped Daniel lie. I helped our father threaten Sarah. And I stayed silent while Gloria and Charles rebuilt the story around a baby who deserved the truth.””
Sarah began sobbing.
Then Eric said one final thing.
“There is one person who can prove every payment and every forged record.””
Everyone froze.
“Attorney Thomas Vale kept copies of everything.””
Charles looked toward the door.
My stomach tightened.
Eric continued.
“Vale told my father he would keep them as insurance.””
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel whispered, “Vale is still alive.””
I turned.
“Where?””
“New York.””
Charles shook his head.
“He retired.””
Daniel looked at him.
“He didn’t retire.””
“What?””
“He disappeared from your firm.””
Charles frowned.
Daniel wiped his face.
“My father used him afterward.””
“For what?””
“To make sure the original hospital records were never restored.””
Noah stared at him.
“So the proof still exists?””
“Maybe.””
Sarah shook her head.
“Not maybe.””
We all looked at her.
She reached into her coat.
Then pulled out a sealed envelope.
“Vale mailed this to me two weeks ago.””
Charles went completely still.
“What?””
Sarah handed it to Rebecca.
On the front was written:
TO REBECCA DAWSON — OPEN ONLY WITH MICHAEL BENNETT PRESENT.
Rebecca looked at me.
I nodded.
She opened it.
Inside were photocopies.
Bank records.
Signed agreements.
The complete DNA report.
And one handwritten letter.
Rebecca began reading.
Then stopped.
“What?””
I asked.
She looked at Charles.
Her face was filled with disbelief.
“This says Charles didn’t create the plan.””
I turned toward my father.
Rebecca continued.
“It says Gloria did.””
Gloria closed her eyes.
Noah whispered, “Grandma?””
Rebecca read the final line aloud.
May you like
“Gloria Dawson demanded lifetime payments in exchange for never telling Michael his son had survived.””
And when Rebecca looked at her mother, Gloria did not deny it.
