Chapter 8: Daniel’s Version

Noah moved before anyone else.

Not toward Daniel.

Toward Rebecca.

He stepped between his mother and the doorway.

Daniel noticed.

His face changed.

For one second, something like shame crossed it.

Then it disappeared.

I stepped forward.

“How did you know we were here?””

Daniel looked at my father.

“Charles called me.””

Everyone turned.

Charles immediately shook his head.

“No.””

Daniel laughed.

“You still lie badly when you’re scared.””

My father stared at him.

“I haven’t spoken to you in twelve years.””

“Not directly.””

Charles frowned.

Daniel pulled a phone from his pocket.

“Someone used your office line.””

Charles went still.

Gloria whispered, “I did.””

We all looked at her.

Rebecca stared.

“You called him?””

Gloria nodded.

“Why?””

“Because I wanted him here when you saw everything.””

Rebecca looked disgusted.

“You invited him?””

“I wanted one night where nobody could run.””

Daniel looked at Gloria.

“That was stupid.””

She gave him a cold stare.

“Maybe.””

Noah’s voice was controlled.

“What did you do to my mother?””

Daniel flinched.

“Noah—”

“Don’t say my name.””

The room went quiet.

Daniel looked at Rebecca instead.

“I never wanted this.””

She laughed through tears.

“You think that matters?””

“I was seventeen.””

“So was I.””

“I was scared.””

“So was I.””

Daniel swallowed.

“I didn’t know what Eric was going to do.””

Rebecca’s face changed.

“Do?””

I stepped closer.

“Choose your words carefully.””

Daniel looked at me.

“You think I don’t know what you want to do right now?””

“No.””

I held his stare.

“You don’t.””

Laura said quietly, “Michael.””

I heard the warning.

I stopped moving.

Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.

“Eric had been drinking.””

Rebecca stared at him.

“I wasn’t.””

“No.””

“You knew that?””

“Yes.””

Silence.

She took one step forward.

“You knew I wasn’t drunk.””

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“Yes.””

Her voice dropped.

“Then why did you tell everyone I was?””

“I panicked.””

“You helped carry me into that room.””

“I thought you were sick.””

“You told Sarah to leave.””

“She was crying.””

“You stayed.””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“Yes.””

Rebecca’s voice sharpened.

“Why?””

He didn’t answer.

Noah stepped forward.

“Answer her.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Because my brother told me to.””

Noah’s jaw tightened.

“You did whatever he told you?””

“Back then, yes.””

“Even that?””

Daniel flinched.

“I didn’t know what he was going to do.””

Gloria picked up one of the photographs.

“You stood outside for forty minutes.””

Daniel looked at her.

“I was seventeen.””

Rebecca screamed.

“So was I!””

Her voice filled the basement.

Dust seemed to tremble in the light.

No one spoke.

Rebecca’s chest heaved.

“You keep saying your age like it erases mine.””

Daniel looked devastated.

“It doesn’t.””

“No.””

She pointed toward the green door.

“I woke up the next morning with no memory.””

He closed his eyes.

“I know.””

“I spent seventeen years thinking I had imagined something.””

“I know.””

“My mother told me I was dramatic.””

Gloria began crying again.

Rebecca didn’t look at her.

“My best friend told me I drank too much.””

Daniel whispered, “Sarah was scared.””

“Of who?””

“Eric.””

That stopped us.

Rebecca frowned.

“Why?””

Daniel looked at the photographs.

“Because Eric threatened her.””

Noah asked, “Threatened her how?””

“He told her if she said anything, our father would destroy her family.””

Laura stared at him.

“Your father had that much power?””

Daniel gave a hollow laugh.

“In that town? Yes.””

My father looked ashamed.

Because he knew exactly what that kind of power looked like.

I asked, “What did Eric do?””

Daniel shook his head.

“I didn’t see inside the room.””

“Then what did he tell you?””

“Nothing at first.””

“Later?””

Daniel’s face went gray.

“He said he had made a mistake.””

Rebecca’s voice went flat.

“What mistake?””

Daniel looked at her.

“He said he touched you.””

Silence.

Rebecca closed her eyes.

Noah stared at Daniel with pure hatred.

Daniel continued quickly.

“He said you were unconscious. He said he panicked.””

I felt fury pulse through me.

Laura stepped closer to me.

Not touching.

Just close enough to remind me where I was.

I forced myself to stay still.

Rebecca whispered, “Did he assault me?””

Daniel couldn’t answer.

She repeated it.

“Did he?””

“I don’t know exactly.””

“You know enough.””

“He said he stopped.””

Rebecca laughed bitterly.

“That’s your defense?””

“No.””

“Then what are you doing?””

“Trying to tell you what happened.””

“No. You’re trying to tell me the version that lets you sleep.””

Daniel looked like she had struck him.

Good.

Noah pointed at the evidence envelope.

“Why did your father keep that?””

Daniel looked at it.

His face changed immediately.

“What is that?””

Gloria held it up.

“Evidence your father hid.””

Daniel stared.

“Where did you get that?””

“False panel.””

“No.””

He stepped forward.

I blocked him.

“Stay there.””

Daniel froze.

His eyes stayed on the envelope.

“What’s inside?””

“Rebecca’s necklace. An old biological sample.””

Daniel whispered, “My father said he destroyed everything.””

Gloria laughed coldly.

“Your father trusted nobody.””

Daniel looked shaken.

Noah asked, “Can it prove what happened?””

Daniel stared at him.

“Maybe.””

That one word changed the room.

Rebecca looked at Daniel.

“You knew samples existed.””

He nodded.

“My father had them tested privately.””

My chest tightened.

“For what?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Michael.””

I stepped closer.

“What?””

“He wanted to know whether Noah was yours.””

“We already know that.””

“No.””

Daniel looked at me.

“He wanted to know before anyone else did.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because Eric was terrified Noah might be his.””

Rebecca made a sound of horror.

Noah’s face emptied.

I felt the floor disappear beneath me.

“No.””

Daniel nodded.

“That’s why there were multiple tests.””

Gloria stared at him.

“You told your father Eric could be the father?””

“Yes.””

Rebecca whispered, “Was he?””

“No.””

The answer came instantly.

She stared.

“How do you know?””

Daniel looked at Noah.

“Because my father tested Eric too.””

Everyone froze.

Noah stepped closer.

“And?””

“Zero probability.””

Rebecca’s shoulders sagged.

Not relief.

Something more complicated.

Daniel continued.

“Michael was always your biological father.””

I looked at him.

“Then what was your father hiding?””

Daniel’s face tightened.

“The fact that Eric assaulted Rebecca anyway.””

Silence.

Noah turned away.

Emily started crying quietly again.

Rebecca stood motionless.

Daniel looked at her.

“I’m sorry.””

She looked at him with an expression so empty it frightened me.

“You’re sorry.””

“Yes.””

“For which part?””

He couldn’t answer.

“For carrying me into the room?””

Silence.

“For leaving me there?””

Silence.

“For lying afterward?””

His eyes filled.

“Yes.””

“For letting my mother think Michael abandoned me?””

Daniel shook his head.

“I didn’t know about that part.””

“But you knew he thought Noah was dead.””

Daniel looked at me.

I felt it before he spoke.

“Yes.””

My hands clenched.

“You knew?””

“My father told me.””

“When?””

“After the DNA test.””

“And you said nothing?””

Daniel’s voice broke.

“I was afraid.””

I stepped forward.

“So was everyone, apparently.””

“Michael—”

“No.””

My voice echoed.

“You watched me grieve a dead child who was alive.””

“I was eighteen.””

“So was I.””

He looked down.

I understood Rebecca’s anger now.

Age had become everyone’s shield.

A shield built from the same number.

Seventeen.

Eighteen.

Young enough to be manipulated.

Old enough to make choices.

Old enough for those choices to destroy other people.

Noah looked at Daniel.

“Did you ever see me after I was born?””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Once.””

Rebecca stared.

“What?””

“At the hospital.””

“You were there?””

“Yes.””

She shook her head.

“I don’t remember you.””

“I stayed outside most of the time.””

“Why?””

“My father wanted me to sign the paternity papers.””

Noah laughed in disbelief.

“You knew you weren’t my father.””

“Yes.””

“And you signed?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Money.””

The honesty stunned everyone.

Noah stared at him.

“You got paid?””

Daniel nodded.

“How much?””

“Fifty thousand.””

Rebecca covered her mouth.

Daniel continued.

“My father said it would keep Eric out of prison and keep Michael’s family from coming after us.””

My father snapped.

“That was never part of any agreement I made.””

Daniel looked at Charles.

“You knew my name was going on the certificate.””

“Yes.””

“You knew I was being paid.””

“No.””

Daniel laughed.

“Then your lawyer lied too.””

Charles went still.

I looked between them.

“What lawyer?””

Neither answered.

Daniel spoke first.

“Thomas Vale.””

My father’s face drained.

Laura noticed.

“Who is Thomas Vale?””

Charles whispered, “My former attorney.””

Daniel nodded.

“He coordinated everything.””

Gloria stared at Charles.

“You told me you handled the paperwork yourself.””

“I thought I did.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You didn’t.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did Vale do?””

Daniel looked around the room.

“He changed more than the birth certificate.””

Rebecca frowned.

“What else?””

Daniel looked at Noah.

“Your hospital record.””

Noah went still.

“What about it?””

“There were two files.””

“Why?””

“One under Dawson.””

Daniel swallowed.

“One under Mercer.””

Rebecca whispered, “Why?””

“So if Michael ever searched, there would be no clean trail.””

I felt sick.

Noah stared at him.

“You erased me.””

Daniel’s face broke.

“I helped.””

The admission hung there.

No excuses.

No youth.

Just truth.

Then Gloria suddenly sat down.

Her hand went to her chest.

Rebecca rushed toward her.

“Mom?””

Gloria shook her head.

“I’m fine.””

She wasn’t.

Her breathing had become shallow.

Laura moved closer.

“We should get her upstairs.””

Gloria grabbed Rebecca’s wrist.

“No.””

“Mom.””

“No. Not yet.””

She looked at Daniel.

“Tell her about Sarah.””

Daniel’s face changed.

Rebecca froze.

“What about Sarah?””

Daniel shook his head.

“Gloria.””

“Tell her.””

“No.””

Rebecca’s voice became very quiet.

“What about Sarah?””

Daniel looked trapped.

He glanced toward the door.

Noah stepped in front of it.

“You’re not leaving.””

Daniel swallowed.

“Sarah didn’t just leave you that night.””

Rebecca stared.

“What does that mean?””

“She came back.””

My chest tightened.

“When?”” I asked.

“About twenty minutes after Eric went into the room.””

Rebecca’s face changed.

“And?””

Daniel stared at the floor.

“She opened the door.””

Rebecca whispered, “She saw me?””

“Yes.””

“What did she do?””

Daniel couldn’t look at her.

“She saw enough.””

Rebecca’s eyes filled.

“And then?””

“She ran.””

“That’s all?””

“No.””

“What happened?””

Daniel looked at her.

“My father found her before she reached the main road.””

Silence.

Rebecca’s face went blank.

“What did he do?””

Daniel swallowed.

“He paid her family to move.””

Noah stared.

“What?””

“Her father had debts. My father cleared them.””

Rebecca shook her head slowly.

“That’s why Sarah disappeared.””

“Yes.””

“I thought her family moved because of work.””

“That was the story.””

Rebecca covered her mouth.

Gloria whispered, “I didn’t know until years later.””

Rebecca turned on her.

“You never asked?””

“I believed the story.””

“You believed every story that was convenient!””

Gloria flinched.

Rebecca turned back to Daniel.

“Where is Sarah now?””

He looked toward the lake.

“I don’t know.””

“You’re lying.””

“I’m not.””

“Then why do you look like that?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

Because there was one more secret.

We all felt it.

He finally opened them.

“Sarah contacted me last month.””

Rebecca stopped breathing.

“What?””

“She said she was coming back.””

“Why?””

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“Because Eric left a confession.””

Silence.

Rebecca whispered, “A confession?””

Daniel nodded.

“Recorded before he died.””

Noah stepped closer.

“Where is it?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Sarah has it.””

Rebecca’s hands began shaking.

“What does he confess to?””

Daniel’s answer came slowly.

“Everything that happened in this house.””

My heart pounded.

“Then we find Sarah.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I tried.””

“What happened?””

His face went pale.

May you like

“She disappeared three days ago.””

And from somewhere upstairs, a door slammed shut.
