Chapter 6: The Secret Account

I didn't sleep that night.

I sat at my kitchen table until sunrise, staring at the photograph.

Nathan and Daniel.

Together.

The image looked recent.

Not years old.

Not some forgotten memory.

Recent.

My son had been meeting the one person who might know what Thomas left behind.

And he never told me.

At seven in the morning, I called Claire.

She answered immediately.

“I was wondering when you would call.””

“You knew about the account.””

There was a pause.

“Yes.””

I gripped the phone tighter.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I needed to confirm everything first.””

“Claire, my son may be involved in something connected to my late husband.””

“I know.””

“Then tell me.””

She sighed.

“Come here.””

An hour later, I sat across from Claire in her office.

She placed a folder on the desk.

“Before Thomas died, he created a separate account.””

I frowned.

“An account?””

“Yes.””

“For what?””

“To protect you.””

I stared at her.

“From what?””

Claire opened the folder.

“From financial pressure. From anyone who might try to force you into decisions you weren't ready to make.””

I looked down at the documents.

Thomas's signature was everywhere.

My hands trembled.

“He knew?””

“He suspected.””

“Suspected what?””

Claire looked at me carefully.

“That Nathan had begun making risky financial decisions.””

My stomach tightened.

“No.””

“Margaret.””

“No. Nathan would never.””

Claire didn't argue.

She simply slid another document across the desk.

It was a bank statement.

My eyes moved over the numbers.

I stopped breathing.

The account had enough money to change everything.

But that wasn't what shocked me.

It was the date.

The account had been opened months before Thomas died.

And the beneficiary information had been changed only recently.

I looked up.

“Who changed this?””

Claire was quiet.

Then she said:

“Nathan.””

The room felt silent.

“That's impossible.””

“He had access because Thomas added him as a secondary contact years ago.””

“Why would Thomas do that?””

“Because he trusted his son.””

I looked away.

That sentence hurt more than anything.

Thomas trusted Nathan.

I trusted Nathan.

And somehow, we both ended up here.

“Why didn't Nathan just ask me for help?”” I whispered.

Claire folded her hands.

“Because according to these records, he wasn't trying to ask.””

“What was he doing?””

She opened another file.

“He was attempting to move control of several assets.””

My chest tightened.

“Through Emily?””

“Through a company connected to Emily's family.””

I stared at her.

“So the house…”

“Was only part of the plan.””

The words echoed.

Only part.

For months, I thought my daughter-in-law was greedy.

I thought she wanted my home.

I thought this was about money.

But maybe it was about something much bigger.

Claire leaned forward.

“There is something else.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“Daniel contacted me because he found out Nathan had been searching for documents from Thomas's old business records.””

“Why?””

Claire hesitated.

“Because there is a trust.””

I frowned.

“What trust?””

“The one Thomas created for you.””

I felt dizzy.

“I already knew about my inheritance.””

“No.””

Claire shook her head.

“This is separate.””

She opened another folder.

Inside was a letter written in Thomas's handwriting.

I recognized it immediately.

My eyes filled with tears.

I touched the paper.

“When was this written?””

“Two weeks before he passed away.””

I unfolded it.

The first line destroyed me.

*Margaret, if you are reading this, then someone has tried to make you believe you are alone.*

I covered my mouth.

Claire watched silently.

I continued reading.

*Do not let anyone convince you that your kindness is weakness. Even the people we love can make choices that hurt us.*

My vision blurred.

Thomas knew.

Somehow, Thomas knew.

At the bottom of the letter was one final sentence.

*The person who knows the truth about Nathan is the person you least expect.*

I looked at Claire.

“Who?””

Before she could answer, her office door opened.

A man stood there.

Older.

Tired.

Carrying the weight of years on his face.

Daniel Whitmore.

He looked at me.

And the first words out of his mouth made my entire body go still.

“Margaret, I am so sorry.””

I stood.

“Why?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Because I should have told you the truth about your son years ago.””

And then he placed a small box on Claire's desk.

A box with Thomas's name written across the top.

“I found this hidden in his office.””

I stared at it.

“What is inside?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Proof that Nathan didn't start this plan after Thomas died.””

May you like

He swallowed.

“He started it while your husband was still alive.””
