Chapter 4: Thomas's Letter

I made everyone leave the patio.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I needed to hear the truth without Emily's voice cutting through it.

Nathan stood near the driveway.

“Mom, please.””

I didn't answer him.

Emily folded her arms.

“This is insane.””

Margaret pointed toward the street.

“Go home.””

“We live twenty minutes away.””

“Then you have twenty minutes to find somewhere else to argue.””

She stared at me.

“You're throwing us out?””

“No.””

I looked at the cake lying ruined beneath the table.

“You threw yourself out.””

Henry quietly moved toward the grill and shut off the flame.

Margaret came to my side.

“I'm staying.””

I nodded.

“Thank you.””

Nathan looked broken.

“I don't want to leave you like this.””

I looked at him.

“You already did.””

He flinched.

Emily grabbed his wrist.

“Come on.””

They walked toward the driveway.

Halfway there, Nathan stopped.

He turned.

“Mom.””

I waited.

He swallowed.

“I didn't know whether Thomas was really my father.””

The admission hung in the night air.

Emily looked at him in shock.

“You never told me that.””

“I didn't know what to do.””

“You knew enough to plan around it.””

He looked at me.

“I thought the trust belonged to me.””

I felt the last piece of denial disappear.

“So that's what this was.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

“I was scared.””

“Of losing money?””

“Of losing everything.””

I stared at him.

“You should have been afraid of losing me.””

He looked down.

Neither of us spoke.

Then Claire called again.

“I have the letter.””

I turned away from Nathan.

“Send it.””

“No,” Claire said.

“You need to hear it from me.””

She began reading.

“Margaret, if you are reading this, then I've run out of time to tell you the truth myself.””

My chest tightened.

Claire continued.

“I love you. I love Nathan. Nothing in this letter changes the years we shared.””

I covered my mouth.

Nathan was still standing in the driveway.

Claire read the next line.

“But I have never been certain that I am Nathan's biological father.””

Nathan shut his eyes.

Emily whispered, “Oh my God.””

I couldn't move.

Thomas had known.

All those years.

Claire continued.

“Daniel came to me before Nathan was born. He claimed the child could be his. I confronted him. He disappeared before I could get answers.””

Then Claire paused.

I whispered, “Keep reading.””

“I decided that blood would never determine whether Nathan was my son. I raised him as mine, and I loved him as mine.””

A tear slipped down my cheek.

That sounded like Thomas.

That was exactly who he had been.

But then Claire's tone changed.

“The trust I established was never intended to punish Nathan. It was intended to protect Margaret.””

I straightened.

Claire read the next paragraph.

“The principal assets are Margaret's alone. Nathan may benefit only after her death and only if he has not attempted to force, deceive, or pressure her into surrendering them.””

Nathan looked up sharply.

His face had gone white.

Claire continued.

“If Nathan ever tries to take the house while Margaret is alive, he forfeits his future interest completely.””

Silence.

Emily slowly turned toward Nathan.

“You said the transfer was guaranteed.””

Nathan shook his head.

“I thought it was.””

“You said your mother had to sign.””

“I thought she did.””

Claire finished the letter.

“One final warning. Margaret, if someone claims this money belongs to Nathan, do not believe them. I created a separate protection clause because I was afraid someone would eventually use his uncertainty about his parentage to manipulate him.””

My breath caught.

Thomas had seen this coming.

Maybe not Emily.

Maybe not Nathan.

But someone like them.

Someone who would whisper that money mattered more than family.

I lowered the phone.

Claire's voice softened.

“Margaret, there is one more thing.””

I looked toward the driveway.

Nathan was crying silently now.

“What?””

“The 1989 affidavit from Daniel Cross wasn't the only document in the file.””

My heart began pounding.

“What else?””

“There is a second affidavit.””

“From Daniel?””

“No.””

“Then who?””

Claire paused.

“From your mother.””

I froze.

My mother had been dead for seventeen years.

Claire continued.

“And Margaret… she wrote that Daniel Cross was never Nathan's father.””

I stared at the dark window of my own house.

“Then who was?””

Claire took a long breath.

“The affidavit names a different man.””

Nathan stepped forward.

“Mom?””

I could barely hear him.

“Who?””

Claire answered.

“Thomas.””

I stared into the darkness.

For thirty-seven years, I had believed my family was built on one painful secret.

May you like

Now I was learning the secret had never been what I thought.

And someone had known the truth all along.
