Chapter 8: The Person Who Was Watching Us
The darkness felt different this time.
Before, I had been scared because I didn’t know what was happening.
Now I was scared because I did.
Someone wanted us silent.
I grabbed the flashlight from the table.
“Who’s there?””
No answer.
Lily held onto my hand.
I could feel her trembling.
“Eleanor?””
Her voice was barely a whisper.
“I’m here.””
The sound came again.
A movement near the kitchen.
I stepped forward.
Then the lights suddenly returned.
The room was empty.
But the back door was open.
And sitting on the floor was a package.
I didn’t touch it.
Neither did Lily.
A few minutes later, Cole arrived.
The second he saw the open door, his expression changed.
“What happened?””
I explained quickly.
He looked around.
“Did you see anyone?””
“No.””
He walked toward the package.
“Don’t.””
My voice stopped him.
He looked at me.
“We don’t know what’s inside.””
He nodded.
For once, he listened.
We called the sheriff.
While we waited, Cole stood near Lily.
He kept checking her face.
Her hands.
Making sure she was okay.
I noticed something.
The fear had changed him.
Before, he wanted to protect the ranch.
Now he understood what mattered most.
Family.
The sheriff arrived twenty minutes later.
After checking the package, he opened it carefully.
Inside was a single envelope.
My name was written on it.
I felt cold.
The sheriff looked at me.
“Do you know anyone who would send this?””
“No.””
Cole answered before I could.
“She’s being targeted.””
The sheriff opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter.
Only one sentence.
Ask yourself why Clara trusted you instead of her own husband.
Nobody spoke.
Cole looked hurt.
Not angry.
Hurt.
Because that question was designed to destroy him.
I immediately said:
“Cole, don’t listen to this.””
But he was already looking at the old notebook.
At the picture.
At everything we discovered.
“Why didn’t she tell me?””
The pain in his voice was impossible to ignore.
Aaron, who had stayed after everything happened, stepped forward.
“Because she was protecting you.””
Cole looked at him.
“From what?””
Aaron answered:
“From choosing between your wife and your family.””
The words hit him.
“Richard was your family.””
Aaron nodded.
“She knew you would never believe it.””
Cole looked away.
“And she was right.””
The next morning, we went through Clara’s journal.
Not quickly.
Carefully.
Every page revealed another piece.
She had been tracking the stolen money for months.
She had recorded conversations.
Dates.
Names.
But one thing kept appearing.
A name we had not expected.
Eleanor.
Not as a suspect.
As a plan.
“She was trying to protect me before she even knew me,” I whispered.
Aaron nodded.
“Clara believed you were the only person who could expose the truth.””
I looked confused.
“Why?””
He handed me the final page.
I read the words.
Eleanor knows how to find the missing pieces because she thinks like me.
I frowned.
“I don’t understand.””
Cole looked at me.
“What did you do before you came here?””
I hesitated.
“Accounting.””
Aaron nodded.
“Clara knew.””
My heart raced.
“How?””
Aaron looked toward the window.
“Because your husband told her.””
I froze.
“My husband?””
Aaron nodded slowly.
“Your late husband and Clara were working together before either of you lost them.””
The room went silent.
I felt like the ground disappeared beneath me.
“My husband knew Clara?””
“Yes.””
“And he never told me?””
Aaron looked at the journal.
“He was trying to protect you too.””
I stared at the pages.
Two dead people.
Two hidden investigations.
Two families connected by secrets.
Then Cole’s phone rang.
He answered.
A few seconds later, his face changed.
“What happened?””
He looked at me.
Then whispered:
“They found Richard.””
I waited.
“He’s alive.””
My heart sank.
“But he’s asking for one person.””
“Who?””
Cole slowly lowered the phone.
“Eleanor.””
And before anyone could say another word, the sheriff’s car stopped outside the ranch.
May you like
Because Richard Callaway had something to tell me.
Something Clara never had the chance to reveal.
