Chapter 6: The Name Written In Her Diary

I didn’t sleep.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I was trying to understand why a dead man had said my name.

Thomas Vale had never met me.

At least not that I knew.

I arrived at Callaway Ranch with one suitcase and a temporary job agreement.

I was supposed to clean a house.

Cook meals.

Leave after ninety days.

I was never supposed to become part of someone else’s mystery.

But somehow, my name was now connected to a dead man, a stolen fortune, and secrets from a family I barely knew.

The next morning, Cole found me in the kitchen.

“You should leave.””

I looked up.

The words surprised me.

“What?””

“This is dangerous.””

I set down my coffee.

“You’re telling me to leave?””

“Yes.””

“After everything we found?””

“Exactly.””

His voice was firm.

“You came here for a job, Eleanor. Not this.””

I studied him.

“You think sending me away protects me?””

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Cole looked frustrated.

“You don’t understand.””

“I understand more than you think.””

He went quiet.

I lowered my voice.

“You lost your wife because you tried to carry everything alone.””

His expression changed.

“And now you’re doing the same thing.””

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then Lily walked into the kitchen.

She looked between us.

“Are you fighting?””

“No,” Cole said quickly.

“Yes,” I answered at the same time.

Lily frowned.

“You both are bad at lying.””

Despite everything, I almost smiled.

Then she held up something.

“Look what I found.””

It was a small notebook.

Old.

Dusty.

My heart stopped.

Because I recognized it.

Not the notebook itself.

The handwriting.

Cole saw my expression.

“What is it?””

I took it carefully.

“This handwriting…”

“What?””

I opened the first page.

The name written inside was clear.

*Eleanor Marsh.*

My hands went cold.

Cole stepped closer.

“That’s your name.””

“I know.””

“Why would my wife have a notebook with your name?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I had no idea.

Inside were pages of notes.

Dates.

Names.

Numbers.

And one sentence written in bold.

Eleanor is the only person who can prove what happened.

I felt like the room moved.

Cole stared at me.

“What does that mean?””

“I don’t know.””

But the truth was beginning to form.

A truth I didn’t want.

I turned another page.

And there it was.

A photograph.

A younger version of me.

Standing beside my late husband.

And beside us…

Was Cole’s wife.

My breath caught.

“I know her.””

Cole looked shocked.

“You knew my wife?””

I stared at the picture.

Memories rushed back.

A charity event years ago.

A woman who introduced herself as Clara.

A woman who asked me strange questions about accounting.

A woman who said:

“Sometimes the person closest to you is the one you should watch.””

I had forgotten.

Until now.

“Her name wasn’t Clara,” I whispered.

Cole waited.

“What was it?””

I looked at him.

“Your wife.””

The silence was unbearable.

“She came to me before she died.””

Cole stepped closer.

“What did she say?””

I looked back at the notebook.

The final page had only one sentence.

Written days before her death.

If Eleanor remembers, everything will finally come out.

Then the front door slammed.

Both of us turned.

A man stood in the doorway.

Holding a folder.

His face was pale.

“I know why Clara came to you.””

Cole moved forward.

“Who are you?””

The man looked at me.

“I’m the person who helped her uncover the truth.””

He placed the folder on the table.

Then whispered:

“But if you open this, there’s no going back.””

I stared at the folder.

May you like

Because written across the front were four words.

*CALLAWAY RANCH OWNERSHIP FILES.*
