Chapter 8: The Inheritance She Was Never Supposed to Touch
I stared at the document.
My father's signature was unmistakable.
But the name beneath it made no sense.
"Why would my father choose you?""
Vanessa wiped her cheeks.
"Because he trusted me.""
I shook my head.
"He barely knew you.""
"He knew enough.""
"Enough to make you responsible for Noah's inheritance?""
She looked offended.
"Your father understood that you were too emotional when it came to money. He wanted someone practical.""
I laughed bitterly.
"Practical? You hit my son with a fork over rent.""
Her face hardened.
"That happened because you never established boundaries.""
I stared at her.
She genuinely believed she could explain away everything.
"How much money did my father leave Noah?""
Vanessa hesitated.
"Three hundred and fifty thousand dollars.""
The number seemed to hang in the air.
I sat down.
My father had built a successful construction business. He'd always been careful with money, but I'd never imagined he'd left that much for his grandson.
"Where is it?""
Vanessa looked toward the ceiling.
"Invested.""
"Where?""
"In a trust.""
"Which bank?""
She didn't answer.
I picked up the document.
There was a paragraph describing the arrangement.
The inheritance was supposed to remain untouched until Noah turned eighteen.
The appointed trustee could use the money only for approved educational and medical expenses.
Any withdrawal required supporting documentation.
And the trustee had to provide annual financial statements.
I looked up.
"Have you ever given Noah a financial statement?""
Vanessa looked away.
"No.""
"Have you ever shown me the trust account?""
"No.""
"Then how do you know the money is still there?""
She pressed her lips together.
I stood.
"Where is it, Vanessa?""
She finally spoke.
"Some of it was moved.""
My stomach tightened.
"How much?""
"I don't remember.""
"How much?""
She closed her eyes.
"About seventy thousand.""
I stepped backward.
"You took seventy thousand dollars from my son's inheritance?""
"I borrowed it!""
"For what?""
"To pay the debt.""
I couldn't speak.
She rushed on.
"I was going to replace it. I had a plan. Once the house was sold, everything would be settled.""
I looked at her.
"You were going to sell my house to replace money you stole from my son?""
"I didn't steal anything!""
I pointed toward the document.
"That money was placed in a trust for Noah. It was never yours.""
Vanessa began crying.
"Daniel, I was desperate.""
I stared at her.
"Why?""
She looked down.
For a moment, I thought she might finally tell the truth.
Then she said something that made me even angrier.
"Because I didn't want Madison growing up with nothing while Noah had everything.""
I shook my head.
"Madison has never lacked anything in this house.""
"That's not true.""
I pointed toward the dining room.
"She has a bedroom. Clothes. Food.
School supplies. Birthday presents. Everything I've been able to provide.""
"And Noah has a future guaranteed!""
"That's because his grandfather made a decision to protect him.""
Vanessa wiped her nose.
"And what about my daughter?""
I lowered my voice.
"Your daughter isn't responsible for Noah's inheritance. Neither are you.""
She looked toward the kitchen.
"Your mother knew.""
I frowned.
"About what?""
"She knew about the trust.""
Evelyn appeared in the doorway.
"No, I didn't.""
Vanessa turned toward her.
"You knew your husband wanted Noah protected.""
"Of course I knew he loved his grandson. That doesn't mean I knew about the money.""
I looked between them.
"How do we verify this?""
Evelyn immediately answered.
"Your father's attorney.""
I nodded.
"What's his name?""
"Robert Hayes.""
I recognized the name.
Robert had handled my father's estate.
He'd also helped me with the paperwork after the funeral.
I took out my phone and called him.
He answered after three rings.
"Daniel Carter. It's been a long time.""
"Robert, I need your help.""
"Is everything okay?""
"No. I need to know whether my father created a trust for my son.""
There was a pause.
Then Robert asked:
"Who told you about that?""
I looked at Vanessa.
"Someone who apparently has been managing it.""
Another pause.
"Daniel, I need you to come to my office tomorrow morning. Bring every document you have.""
"Can you tell me how much is in the trust?""
"I'd rather discuss that in person.""
"Is the money safe?""
Robert sighed.
"That depends on what you mean by safe.""
My heart sank.
"Has someone withdrawn it?""
"I can't confirm that over the phone.""
I gripped the edge of the table.
"Robert, please.""
His voice became serious.
"Daniel, I received an unusual request concerning that trust several months ago. I refused to process it because the documentation wasn't valid.""
I looked at Vanessa.
She was watching me carefully.
"What kind of request?""
"An application to change the trustee.""
I stopped.
"To whom?""
Robert hesitated.
Then he said:
"Someone wanted to replace the existing trustee with themselves.""
I looked at the photocopy in my hand.
"Who?""
Robert answered quietly.
"Vanessa Carter.""
My wife lowered her eyes.
I felt the last piece of trust disappear.
"Was the request approved?""
"No. But Daniel, there's something else.""
"What?""
"The original trust document contains a clause your father insisted on adding. If the appointed trustee attempts to misuse the inheritance, the trust automatically transfers to a successor trustee.""
I looked toward Evelyn.
"Who is the successor?""
Robert's answer came without hesitation.
"Your mother.""
I slowly lowered the phone.
Vanessa looked furious.
"That's impossible.""
I turned toward her.
"Apparently, my father planned for this.""
She stepped toward me.
"Daniel, listen. Your mother manipulated him.""
Evelyn shook her head.
"I never knew I was named.""
Vanessa grabbed my arm.
"You have to believe me!""
I pulled away.
"Don't touch me.""
Her expression changed.
For the first time, she seemed to realize that the situation had moved beyond an argument between husband and wife.
I called Robert again.
"Can you freeze any further transactions?""
"Already done. But I need you to understand something. If the trust has been improperly accessed, we'll need to investigate every withdrawal.""
"How much is left?""
Robert was silent for a moment.
Then he gave me a number.
"Approximately two hundred and eighty thousand dollars.""
I closed my eyes.
Seventy thousand dollars was missing.
I looked at Vanessa.
"Where did the rest go?""
She began shaking her head.
"I can get it back.""
"Where did it go?""
She backed away.
And then Marcus, who had returned to the doorway, quietly spoke.
"Mr. Carter, I think you should know something about the seventy thousand dollars.""
I turned.
"What?""
Marcus opened his folder.
"I have a copy of the payment instructions Vanessa gave me.""
He placed a sheet on the table.
The recipient wasn't a bank.
It wasn't a business.
It was an individual.
I read the name.
*Madison Carter.*
I looked toward the staircase.
May you like
My wife started crying.
And suddenly, I understood that the money might not have disappeared into debt after all.
