Chapter 3: The Stranger With a Key to My House
The man standing in my kitchen was wearing a dark gray jacket.
He looked to be in his early forties.
His hair was neatly combed, and he carried a leather folder under one arm.
But what caught my attention wasn't his appearance.
It was the key in his hand.
My house key.
The one I'd given Vanessa when we got married.
"Who are you?"" I asked.
The man looked uncomfortable.
Vanessa immediately stepped between us.
"Daniel, this is Marcus.""
I glanced at the papers on the table.
Marcus Reed.
The name appeared on every bank transfer.
"You must be joking.""
Marcus shifted his weight.
"Mr. Carter, I think there's been a misunderstanding.""
"How did you get a key to my house?""
He looked at Vanessa.
She gave him a warning glance.
"Marcus, you should leave.""
He didn't move.
"Vanessa, you told me he knew.""
"Knew what?"" I demanded.
Nobody answered.
My mother crossed her arms.
"Perhaps you should tell him why you brought a property agent into his home.""
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
"Property agent?""
Evelyn pointed toward his leather folder.
"Unless you're here for something else.""
Marcus slowly opened the folder.
"I was told this property was being prepared for sale.""
My ears started ringing.
"What?""
He placed a document on the dining table.
"I've been discussing the property with Vanessa for several weeks. She told me her husband had agreed to sell.""
I looked at my wife.
"Agreed?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"Daniel, let me explain.""
Marcus continued.
"She said you were going through a difficult financial period and needed to sell quickly. We discussed a potential buyer.""
I stared at the document.
It contained photographs of my living room, kitchen, garden, and upstairs bedrooms.
Photographs taken inside my home.
One showed Noah's bedroom.
His blue walls.
His toy dinosaur collection.
His little bed.
Someone had been taking pictures of my son's room without telling me.
"Who took these?"" I asked.
Vanessa swallowed.
"I did.""
"Why?""
"Because we needed money!""
"Who is we?""
She threw her hands into the air.
"Daniel, you act like I'm some criminal! I have needs too!""
I pointed at the photographs.
"Then why are you selling my house?""
"It's our home!""
"No. It's my property.""
Marcus cleared his throat.
"For the record, I never received a signed authorization from Daniel. Vanessa told me the paperwork was being handled.""
I turned toward him.
"Did you receive money?""
He hesitated.
"An initial consultation fee.""
"From whom?""
"Vanessa.""
My mother quietly slid the bank statements closer to me.
I looked at the documents.
There was a payment of three thousand dollars to Marcus.
Another payment of five thousand.
Then another.
The dates stretched across several months.
I looked at Vanessa.
"You used the money I gave you for the bathroom renovation to pay him?""
She looked away.
"I needed to get things started.""
"Started?""
Her voice rose.
"Do you know how expensive everything is? Madison needs clothes, school supplies, activities. I can't spend my entire life asking you for money!""
I pointed toward Noah.
"And what does my son need? Permission to eat?""
Vanessa's mouth tightened.
"Don't bring him into this.""
I stared at her.
"You brought him into it when you started charging him rent.""
Madison quietly pushed her plate away.
"Mom?""
Vanessa turned.
"What?""
"Is that why you made Noah pay you every month?""
The room went silent.
Vanessa blinked.
"Madison, eat your food.""
"But you said we needed the money for our new house.""
I slowly turned toward her.
"Our new house?""
Madison nodded.
"The one you said Uncle Marcus was helping us buy.""
Vanessa's face went white.
Marcus closed his folder.
"I think I should leave.""
"Not yet," I said.
He stopped.
I pointed at the document.
"Was my house actually sold?""
"No.""
"Was there an offer?""
Marcus hesitated.
"There was a preliminary offer, but nothing legally binding.""
My shoulders relaxed for half a second.
Then Evelyn spoke.
"Show him the other document.""
Vanessa turned toward her.
"Please, Evelyn.""
My mother didn't move.
Marcus looked confused.
"What other document?""
Evelyn reached into her handbag and removed a second envelope.
This one was sealed.
She placed it in front of me.
"Daniel, I found this inside Vanessa's car last week. I didn't open it until I realized the house wasn't the only thing involved.""
I broke the seal.
Inside was a photocopy of a document from a bank.
At the top was a loan application.
The applicant's name was Vanessa Carter.
The requested amount was $85,000.
I scanned the page.
Then I stopped at the section listing the collateral.
My property.
My house.
But something else made my blood run cold.
Under the section marked CO-APPLICANT, there was another name.
Not Marcus.
Not Vanessa.
Mine.
Daniel Carter.
And beneath it was a signature that looked almost exactly like my own.
I slowly lifted my eyes.
"Vanessa...""
She started crying.
"Daniel, I can explain.""
"Did you sign my name?""
She shook her head.
"No.""
"Then who did?""
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then Madison began crying.
"Mom, please don't tell him.""
I turned toward the little girl.
"Madison, what do you know?""
Vanessa rushed toward her daughter.
"Go upstairs. Right now!""
Madison stood frozen.
Evelyn gently reached for her hand.
"Sweetheart, nobody is going to hurt you.""
The little girl looked at her mother.
Then at me.
And finally, she whispered something that made my entire body go cold.
"Mom said Grandma Evelyn gave her the papers.""
I looked at my mother.
Evelyn's face changed.
For the first time that evening, she seemed genuinely shocked.
Vanessa slowly stopped crying.
May you like
Then she looked directly at Evelyn and said:
"Tell him what you did before you start accusing me.""
