Chapter 3 - The Woman Behind the Locked Door

Naomi couldn't tell her story all at once.

The doctors warned that she was physically exhausted and needed rest.

Detective Brooks agreed to conduct her interviews in short sessions, with breaks whenever Naomi became overwhelmed.

During the first interview, Naomi explained what had happened seven months earlier.

It began with an invoice.

Carter Family Catering had operated in Atlanta for nearly twelve years.

Elijah handled clients and events.

Naomi managed finances, payroll, and the small commercial building her father had helped them purchase.

They each owned a share of the business.

After her father's death, Naomi had inherited an additional ownership interest in the property itself.

The building was one of the family's largest assets.

That fact became important when Tasha Bell joined the company.

Tasha was efficient, charming, and extraordinarily good at convincing people she could solve their problems.

She took over supplier payments and began reorganizing vendor accounts.

Elijah was impressed.

Naomi was relieved.

Their business had grown faster than they expected, and both were exhausted.

Then Naomi found invoices for deliveries that never arrived.

Thousands of dollars had been paid to a supply company she didn't recognize.

She investigated further.

The business address belonged to an entity associated with Tasha's cousin Andre.

When Naomi questioned Tasha, she received a polished explanation about emergency refrigeration rentals and transportation charges.

But the numbers didn't match.

Naomi told her husband something was wrong.

Elijah promised to review it.

He never did.

He was occupied with a large corporate contract, and Tasha assured him Naomi had misunderstood the accounting.

Three days later, Naomi confronted Tasha in the industrial kitchen.

"I want access to every payment record," Naomi said.

Tasha smiled.

"You already have access."

"Then explain the missing money."

The smile disappeared.

"You're making accusations you can't prove."

Naomi placed a folder on the counter.

"I've already copied the invoices."

Tasha stared at the folder.

Then she asked where the copies were.

Naomi refused to answer.

That evening, Naomi left the kitchen through the rear loading entrance.

Andre was waiting beside a supply van.

She remembered someone calling her name.

Then Andre grabbed her from behind.

The folder fell.

By the time Naomi understood what was happening, she was trapped inside the van.

Detective Brooks listened without interrupting.

"Where did they take you?"

"A house outside the city. I couldn't see the address."

"Could you describe it?"

Naomi nodded.

"A narrow house with green shutters. A gravel driveway. There was a railroad crossing nearby. I could hear trains at night."

"Who was there?"

"Mostly Andre."

Naomi's hands tightened around the hospital blanket.

"Tasha came sometimes."

She explained that they had kept her in a locked room, bringing food and water while repeatedly demanding that she sign documents.

The papers would transfer her controlling interest in the commercial property to a company Tasha could influence.

Naomi refused.

She knew that losing the building could destroy her family's business and jeopardize the financial security she and Elijah had built for Emma.

At first, Tasha threatened to tell Elijah that Naomi had stolen the missing money.

Later, she claimed Elijah had stopped looking for her.

She showed Naomi photographs of Emma entering school with her father.

Then photographs of Tasha standing beside Elijah at company events.

Naomi looked away.

"She told me he had moved on."

Detective Brooks asked, "Did you believe her?"

Naomi shook her head.

"I didn't know what to believe. But I knew Emma needed me."

Her voice weakened.

"Tasha said if I tried to escape, Andre would make sure I never saw her again."

For seven months, Naomi had measured time through daylight, train sounds, and the occasional date printed on food packaging.

She hadn't been inside the freezer all that time.

The freezer was where Tasha hid her after she finally escaped.

That morning, Andre had left the house in a hurry after receiving a call.

A damaged latch on the outer door failed to catch properly.

Naomi had been testing that door whenever she was left alone.

This time, it opened.

She walked for miles before reaching a roadside service station.

A woman there helped her contact a local taxi driver after Naomi said she needed to reach her family's business.

She hadn't called Elijah first because she no longer knew whether his phone was safe or whether he believed Tasha.

She knew the catering kitchen's address by heart.

She also knew Elijah normally checked weekend deliveries on Saturday afternoons.

When she reached the property, she entered through the side door.

She was looking for the office when Tasha appeared.

Naomi tried to run.

Tasha grabbed her necklace.

The chain snapped.

She pushed Naomi into the open freezer.

There was an old moving blanket inside, left from a recent storage cleanup.

Naomi wrapped it around herself.

Then she heard the metal lock snap shut outside.

"I called for help," Naomi whispered.

Detective Brooks leaned closer.

"Did anyone answer?"

Naomi's eyes filled.

"Emma."

For the first time during the interview, Naomi managed a faint smile.

"My little girl heard me."

Across town, Elijah was examining the financial records that Tasha had managed.

He found payments to unfamiliar businesses.

He found supplier accounts he had never approved.

And he found a set of property-transfer documents saved on the company computer.

One page contained his electronic approval.

He remembered signing a routine financial authorization months earlier.

He had never realized the attached documents could be used to support a transfer of control over the property.

He immediately called Detective Brooks.

When she asked him to preserve the computer and not alter any records, he agreed.

Then he stared at the signature displayed on his monitor.

For seven months, he had believed his wife had chosen to leave.

Now he faced a possibility he could barely stand.

While Naomi was begging someone to let her return home, he had been trusting the woman responsible for keeping her away.
