Chapter 1 - The Girl Who Wouldn't Stop Swinging

The hammer was almost too heavy for Emma Carter to lift.
But she lifted it anyway.
Metal struck metal with a terrible crack that echoed through the industrial kitchen.
"OPEN IT!" she screamed.
Eight-year-old Emma stood in front of a massive walk-in freezer, tears streaming down her cheeks. Her small hands gripped the wooden handle of a heavy hammer she had found beside a maintenance cart.
A thick padlock secured the freezer door from the outside.
Emma swung again.
The hammer struck the metal hasp.
"EMMA! STOP!"
Tasha Bell rushed across the kitchen, her heels slipping on the polished floor.
She grabbed Emma around the waist and tried to pull her backward.
"Give me that hammer!"
Emma screamed louder.
"NO! MOMMY'S IN THERE!"
Tasha froze.
For the briefest moment, something ugly crossed her face.
Then she recovered.
"Sweetheart, you're confused. There's nobody inside."
"YOU'RE LYING!"
Emma twisted away and struck the lock again.
The sound brought her father running from the adjoining office.
Elijah Carter was thirty-nine, broad-shouldered, and still wearing the dark blue work shirt he had worn to inspect his catering company's weekend deliveries.
He stopped in the doorway.
"Emma! What on earth are you doing?"
Tasha hurried toward him.
"Elijah, thank goodness. She's having another episode. She keeps saying her mother is here."
Elijah's expression softened with familiar exhaustion.
For seven months, his daughter had been asking when her mother was coming home.
Seven months of crying herself to sleep.
Seven months of leaving an empty place beside her on the couch.
Seven months of refusing to accept the explanation he had given her.
Naomi Carter had abandoned them.
That was what Elijah believed.
He had a message on his phone and a letter apparently written by Naomi herself.
She needed a different life.
She didn't want to be contacted.
And she wasn't coming back.
Elijah knelt in front of his daughter.
"Emma, baby. Look at me."
Emma shook her head.
"Please put the hammer down."
"No!"
"Your mother left seven months ago, sweetheart. We've talked about this."
Emma stared at him.
Her lower lip trembled.
Then she slowly opened her left hand.
Something silver glimmered against her skin.
A necklace.
At the end of the chain hung a tiny heart-shaped pendant.
Elijah stopped breathing.
He knew that necklace.
He had bought it for Naomi on their fifth wedding anniversary.
Inside the heart was a photograph of baby Emma asleep against her mother's chest.
Naomi had almost never taken it off.
"Where did you get that?" Elijah whispered.
Emma pointed toward the freezer.
"Right there. On the floor."
Tasha immediately stepped forward.
"That could have been lying around for months."
Emma shook her head violently.
"No! Mommy was calling my name!"
"Emma," Tasha snapped, "that's enough."
The child turned toward her father.
"YOU'RE LYING, DADDY!"
Elijah flinched.
He had never heard his daughter speak to him that way.
"Emma—"
"Mommy didn't leave me!"
She pulled away from him.
Before Elijah could reach her, Emma raised the hammer with both hands.
One final blow struck the damaged fastening.
The bent metal gave way.
The padlock fell against the floor.
For a moment, the only sound was the steady hum of the refrigeration system.
Then the freezer door moved.
A thin ribbon of white mist curled into the warm kitchen.
Emma dropped the hammer.
"Daddy?"
Elijah pushed the heavy door open.
And everything he believed about the past seven months collapsed.
A woman sat curled against the wall.
An old gray blanket covered her shoulders.
Her bare hands were pressed together beneath her chin.
Her lips trembled uncontrollably.
Dark circles surrounded her eyes, and her face had become painfully thin.
But Elijah knew her immediately.
"Naomi?"
His voice barely worked.
The woman lifted her head.
Her eyes moved past him.
Straight to the little girl standing in the doorway.
"Emma?"
The word came out as a broken whisper.
Emma made a sound Elijah had never heard before.
"Mommy!"
She ran forward.
Naomi struggled to raise one arm.
Emma caught her freezing hand between both of hers.
"Mommy, I knew it! I knew you didn't leave!"
Naomi began crying.
"My baby. My sweet baby."
Behind them, Tasha backed away.
One step.
Then another.
Elijah turned just in time to see her run toward the rear service exit.
"Tasha!"
She didn't look back.
A metal door slammed somewhere beyond the kitchen.
Elijah stared after her.
Then Naomi tightened her trembling fingers around his wrist.
"Elijah."
He turned.
Her voice was so weak that he had to lean closer.
"Call the police."
He swallowed.
"Naomi, what happened to you?"
She looked toward the doorway where Tasha had disappeared.
May you like
And whispered the words that would change their family forever.
"She never let me leave."
