Chapter 7: The Father I Never Knew
The sentence stayed in my mind long after I finished reading it.
*Twenty years ago, David Mercer had known my name. Before Claire ever introduced herself to me.*
I looked up slowly.
Claire was crying.
Not the kind of crying that comes from fear.
The kind that comes when a secret you buried for decades finally digs itself out.
Madison stared at her mother.
“Mom.””
Claire didn’t answer.
“Mom, what does that mean?””
Her lips trembled.
“I was going to tell you.””
Madison laughed quietly.
“When?””
Claire looked down.
“I don’t know.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“No.””
“Then tell me the truth.””
Everyone in the room stood frozen.
Ethan held the edge of the table beside him.
Charles looked like he had aged ten years in a few minutes.
Richard watched Claire carefully.
Almost like he already knew.
That scared me more than anything.
I turned toward him.
“You knew.””
Richard’s eyes moved to me.
“Not everything.””
“But something.””
He didn’t answer.
Madison noticed.
“Richard.””
He looked at her.
“What?””
“You knew my mother before she met Tom?””
Richard sighed.
“Yes.””
Her face tightened.
“How?””
Richard looked uncomfortable for the first time since he arrived.
“Because David told me.””
Claire closed her eyes.
“Of course he did.””
Madison looked between them.
“Someone needs to start explaining.””
Claire sat on the edge of the bed.
Her hands shook.
“Twenty-one years ago, before I met Tom, before I married again, I was lost.””
Madison crossed her arms.
“Lost?””
“I had just left Richard. I had no money. No confidence. No idea what I was going to do.””
Richard looked away.
Claire continued.
“I met David at a restaurant.””
Madison’s expression changed.
“The same David Mercer?””
“Yes.””
“And he knew Richard?””
“Yes.””
The room became silent.
Claire wiped her face.
“David told me Richard had been involved with things I didn’t understand.””
Richard scoffed.
“Convenient story.””
Claire looked at him.
“You lied to me for years.””
Richard said nothing.
“He told me Richard was dangerous.””
Madison looked at Richard.
“Was he?””
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“I made mistakes.””
“That wasn’t my question.””
Nobody answered.
I stepped closer.
“Claire.””
She looked at me.
“What did David want?””
Her eyes filled with guilt.
“At first?””
She swallowed.
“He wanted information.””
“About Richard?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because David believed Richard had evidence that could clear his name.””
Charles looked at her.
“And you helped him?””
Claire shook her head.
“I didn’t know what was happening.””
Madison stared.
“But you knew him.””
Claire nodded.
“I knew him for three months.””
“Three months?””
“Yes.””
“And then?””
Claire looked at me.
“That’s when I met you.””
The words landed heavily.
I remembered that day.
The barbecue.
The nervous little girl holding Claire’s hand.
The woman who apologized for everything.
The woman who looked exhausted from carrying a life she never asked for.
“You never told me.””
Claire cried harder.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
She looked toward the letter.
“Of this.””
Madison picked up the page.
“Of me finding out?””
“No.””
Claire shook her head.
“Of you finding out who your father might be.””
Nobody moved.
Madison whispered.
“Might be.””
Claire looked at her.
“David was the only person who knew.””
“Did he take a DNA test?””
“No.””
“Why not?””
“Because he disappeared.””
Ethan looked at Charles.
“After your family found out?””
Charles looked away.
That was answer enough.
Madison stared at her mother.
“So you knew there was a chance David was my father.””
Claire nodded.
“Yes.””
“And you married Tom anyway.””
The sentence hurt.
I saw it hit Claire.
“I loved Tom.””
Madison looked at me.
I wished she wouldn’t.
“I do love him.””
I looked down.
Because I didn’t know what to feel.
The woman I built a family with had carried a secret for twenty years.
A secret involving the man standing in the middle of the biggest disaster of our lives.
Madison whispered.
“Did Tom know?””
Claire shook her head.
“No.””
“Did Richard know?””
A long pause.
Then:
“Yes.””
Richard looked at Madison.
“I suspected.””
Her face hardened.
“You suspected?””
“Yes.””
“And you still left?””
Richard looked away.
“I wasn’t ready.””
Madison laughed.
“You weren’t ready to be a father.””
The silence after that was brutal.
Ethan picked up the letter.
“There’s more.””
Everyone looked at him.
He unfolded the remaining pages.
“My mother wrote this.””
Charles stepped forward.
“Margaret?””
Ethan nodded.
“She was here.””
He looked at the page.
“She wrote that she found David because she wanted answers.””
Charles swallowed.
“About the accident?””
“Yes.””
Ethan continued reading.
“She discovered my grandfather had hidden documents proving the financial crimes.””
Richard nodded.
“Exactly.””
Ethan kept reading.
“She also discovered something else.””
He stopped.
“What?””
Madison asked.
Ethan looked at the paper.
“She knew David had a daughter.””
Everyone turned toward Claire.
Claire went pale.
“No.””
Ethan read the next line.
“David told Margaret that Claire’s daughter was the reason he needed to return.””
Madison stepped backward.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Ethan kept reading.
“He believed if the Carter family ever found out Madison existed, she would become a target.””
Charles stared.
“Why?””
Ethan lowered the letter.
“I don’t know.””
Then he turned the page.
His expression changed.
“What?””
Madison asked.
Ethan looked up.
“My mother wrote one more thing.””
He hesitated.
Then read.
“Richard Vale was not the only person looking for David Mercer’s daughter.””
A cold feeling moved through the room.
I looked toward the hallway.
The wedding venue suddenly felt different.
No longer a place for celebration.
A place where secrets had gathered.
Madison whispered.
“Who else was looking for me?””
Nobody answered.
Then the room phone rang.
Everyone jumped.
The hotel room was silent.
The phone kept ringing.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Richard moved toward it.
I grabbed his arm.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“It could be important.””
“That’s exactly why you don’t answer.””
The ringing stopped.
A voicemail notification appeared.
Then Richard’s phone rang.
Not the room phone.
His own.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
Madison saw it.
“Who is it?””
Richard slowly turned the phone around.
One name appeared.
*GERALD CARTER.*
May you like
Charles whispered:
“He knows.””
