Chapter 3: The Blood Test

Nobody moved.

The music outside the bridal suite kept playing.

Soft piano.

Violins.

Something elegant and romantic.

Inside the room, Ethan stared at Richard as if the man had just pulled the floor out from under him.

“Answer him.””

Richard swallowed.

“Ethan—”

“Don’t call me that.””

Charles stepped closer.

His face had gone gray.

“I asked you a question.””

Richard looked toward the door.

I shifted slightly, blocking it.

“Answer him.””

Madison stood beside the vanity, still holding the DNA report.

Her fingers trembled so badly the pages rattled.

“This says there’s a ninety-nine point nine percent probability of a parent-child relationship.””

She looked at Ethan.

Then Richard.

Then back at the report.

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“This has to be wrong.””

Claire put one hand over her mouth.

Ethan did not look at Madison.

He looked only at Richard.

“You’re my father?””

Richard exhaled slowly.

“I didn’t know for certain until recently.””

Charles took one step backward.

That answer hit harder than a denial would have.

Ethan laughed once.

A short, empty sound.

“What?””

Richard raised his hands.

“Your mother and I had a relationship before you were born.””

Charles’s head snapped toward him.

“A relationship?””

Richard said nothing.

Charles stared.

“You slept with my wife.””

“Charles—”

“You slept with my wife.””

“It was complicated.””

Charles’s voice exploded.

“Stop saying that!””

Everyone flinched.

Even Richard.

Charles had been calm from the moment he entered the room.

Now his entire body shook.

“Margaret was pregnant,” he said.

Richard looked down.

Charles stepped closer.

“You knew she was pregnant.””

“I knew she might be.””

“And you disappeared.””

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“I was leaving the company anyway.””

“No. You were running because the audit was closing in.””

Richard’s eyes flashed.

“Your father had already decided I was guilty.””

“You were guilty.””

“That’s your version.””

“There are bank records.””

“There are accusations.””

“There are transfers into a company with your name on it!””

Madison whispered, “Please stop.””

Nobody heard her.

Ethan finally looked at Charles.

“Dad.””

Charles froze.

That one word broke something in his expression.

Ethan swallowed hard.

“Did Mom know?””

Charles slowly shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

“Did you?””

“No.””

“Never?””

“Never.””

Ethan stared at the man who had raised him.

Charles looked devastated.

“I was in the delivery room,” he said.

His voice dropped.

“I cut the cord.””

Ethan’s face tightened.

Charles continued anyway.

“I held you before your mother did because she was exhausted.””

“Dad.””

“I taught you to swim.””

“Dad.””

“I carried you into the house when you fell asleep in the car.””

“Dad, stop.””

Charles closed his eyes.

The room went silent again.

I understood that pain.

Different circumstances.

Same wound.

Biology had entered the room like a weapon and suddenly every year of love seemed to be standing trial.

Madison looked at Richard.

“So Ethan is your son.””

Richard rubbed his forehead.

“Biologically.””

The word made Ethan flinch.

Madison stared at him.

“And I’m your daughter.””

Richard hesitated.

Something about that hesitation made my stomach drop.

Madison noticed too.

“What?””

Richard looked at me.

I saw panic in his face.

Not shame.

Panic.

Madison stepped toward him.

“What?””

“Madison—”

“Why did you hesitate?””

Richard shook his head.

“I didn’t.””

“You did.””

“No.””

“Yes, you did.””

She lifted the DNA report.

“This compares you to Ethan.””

Richard said nothing.

Madison’s breathing grew shallow.

“Where’s mine?””

Claire frowned.

“What?””

Madison looked at Richard.

“If you were suddenly worried Ethan might be your son, why didn’t you test me too?””

Richard’s mouth tightened.

Ethan looked between them.

Charles slowly turned toward Richard.

That was the moment I realized Rebecca had been trying to tell me something in her final voicemail.

I had received it while driving to the venue.

I never listened past the first thirty seconds because the coordinator called.

I remembered the first sentence perfectly.

Tom, there is one additional finding regarding Madison that you need to hear before the ceremony.

My stomach turned.

I reached for my phone.

Richard saw me.

“What are you doing?””

“Checking something.””

“Now?””

“Yes.””

He moved toward me.

Ethan stepped between us.

“Don’t touch him.””

Richard stopped.

I unlocked my phone and opened Rebecca’s voicemail.

Everyone watched me.

I put it on speaker.

Rebecca’s voice filled the room.

“Tom, I’m calling regarding the supplemental DNA documentation we received this morning.””

Richard closed his eyes.

Madison whispered, “Supplemental?””

The recording continued.

“The lab comparison involving Richard Vale and Ethan Carter is conclusive. However, Richard also submitted a second sample several months ago using a private testing service.””

Madison’s face changed.

Claire grabbed the back of a chair.

Rebecca continued.

“We obtained the records through the financial investigation because Vale Heritage Holdings paid for the test.””

Madison looked straight at Richard.

“You tested me.””

Richard said nothing.

The voicemail continued.

“The test subject was identified as Madison Bennett.””

Nobody breathed.

Then came Rebecca’s next sentence.

“The result excludes Richard Vale as Madison Bennett’s biological father.””

Madison dropped the report.

It hit the floor.

Claire made a sound I had never heard from her before.

A tiny broken gasp.

Madison turned toward her mother.

“Mom?””

Claire backed away.

“Madison…”

“Mom.””

Her voice sharpened.

“What did she just say?””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

I stared at my wife.

“What is happening?””

She looked at me.

That was when fear entered me.

Not suspicion.

Not anger.

Fear.

Because Claire looked guilty.

Madison grabbed her mother’s wrist.

“Tell me.””

Claire shook her head.

“Not like this.””

Madison laughed hysterically.

“Not like this?””

She pointed toward the ballroom.

“I was supposed to get married in eight minutes.””

Her finger moved toward Richard.

“The man I kicked Dad aside for is apparently not my father.””

Then toward Ethan.

“And he is apparently Ethan’s father.””

Her hand dropped.

“So please tell me what part of this situation has a better time and place.””

Claire began crying.

“I was young.””

Madison went still.

Charles stared at her.

Ethan stared too.

I felt my heartbeat in my throat.

“Claire.””

She looked at me.

“Who is Madison’s father?””

Her chin trembled.

“Tom…”

“Who?””

Madison turned toward me.

For one terrifying second, I saw hope appear in her eyes.

Then she whispered something so softly I almost missed it.

“Could it be you?””

My stomach twisted.

Claire closed her eyes.

“No.””

That hurt more than it should have.

Madison’s face fell.

I forced myself to stay upright.

“Then who?””

Claire sat heavily on the edge of the sofa.

“I never knew for certain.””

Madison stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

Claire wiped her face.

“It means Richard and I were already separated.””

Richard looked at her.

“Claire.””

She pointed at him.

“Don’t.””

For once, Richard obeyed.

Claire continued.

“Our marriage had already collapsed. Richard was disappearing for days. There were women.

Gambling. Money problems.””

Richard muttered, “That’s not—”

“I said don’t.””

He fell silent.

Claire looked at Madison.

“I met someone.””

Madison swallowed.

“Who?””

“A man named David Mercer.””

Charles reacted.

It was small.

But I saw it.

His eyes widened.

Ethan saw it too.

“Dad?””

Charles didn’t answer.

Claire continued.

“David was kind. He listened to me. I was angry.

Lonely. Stupid.””

Madison’s eyes filled.

“Was he married?””

Claire nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked away.

It felt as though every relationship in the room had been built over a sinkhole.

Madison’s voice shook.

“And you got pregnant.””

“I found out after Richard left.””

“Did David know?””

“Yes.””

“What did he say?””

Claire looked down.

“He said the baby couldn’t be his.””

“Why?””

“He had a family.””

Madison laughed bitterly.

“So that solved it?””

“No.””

“Did Richard think I was his?””

Claire hesitated.

“At first.””

Richard cut in.

“Until she told me.””

Madison turned.

“You knew?””

Richard nodded.

“I knew there was a possibility.””

“And you still let me believe you were my father?””

His face hardened.

“I was legally your father.””

“Legally?””

Madison looked sick.

“You left me when I was six.””

Richard didn’t answer.

“You ignored me for twenty years.””

“I made mistakes.””

“And then you came back because I was marrying Ethan.””

Richard said nothing.

She stared at him.

“You knew you weren’t my father.””

Silence.

Madison’s shoulders dropped.

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

The word almost disappeared beneath the music outside.

Madison covered her mouth.

I wanted to go to her.

Every instinct in me told me to cross the room and hold her the way I had when she fell off that bicycle.

But I stopped myself.

She had asked for Richard.

Maybe she needed space.

Then she turned toward me.

Not Richard.

Me.

“Dad.””

My chest tightened.

She walked across the room.

Her mascara had begun running.

“I’m sorry.””

I couldn’t answer.

She grabbed my jacket.

“I’m so sorry.””

“Madison.””

“I didn’t know.””

“I know.””

“I thought…”

She couldn’t finish.

I put my arms around her.

She collapsed against me.

“I’m sorry.””

I closed my eyes.

“I know.””

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Ethan whispered, “There’s still something wrong.””

Madison pulled away.

“What?””

Ethan picked up the DNA report.

He looked toward Charles.

“If Richard isn’t Madison’s father, then Madison and I aren’t related.””

Charles nodded slowly.

“That’s correct.””

Relief crossed Madison’s face for the first time.

Small.

Fragile.

But Ethan was not relieved.

He stared at Richard.

“So why were you trying to stop the wedding?””

Richard looked confused.

“I wasn’t.””

“Yes, you were.””

Richard scoffed.

“I came here to walk her down the aisle.””

Ethan shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“You said he offered to disappear for money.””

“Yes.””

“And if Mr. Bennett paid him, he wouldn’t come.””

“Yes.””

Ethan turned back toward Richard.

“So either you wanted money more than you wanted access to the Carters…”

He paused.

“…or you were afraid of something happening if this wedding went ahead.””

Richard’s face changed.

Charles noticed.

“What else is there?””

Richard smiled nervously.

“Nothing.””

Charles stepped closer.

“You have lied about everything since you walked into this building.””

“Charles.””

“What else?””

Richard said nothing.

Ethan pointed at the document.

“You learned you were my biological father months ago.””

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“And you learned Madison wasn’t your daughter months ago.””

Silence.

“So why reconnect with her?””

Madison wiped her face.

Richard looked toward the door again.

And suddenly I understood.

I pulled out my phone.

Rebecca’s voicemail had another minute remaining.

I hit play.

Her voice returned.

“There is one additional issue. Our investigator located correspondence between Richard Vale and David Mercer dated three weeks ago.””

Claire gasped.

Richard lunged for my phone.

Ethan caught his arm.

“What correspondence?””

Rebecca’s recorded voice answered him.

“According to those messages, Mr. Mercer appears to know about Madison’s wedding and has made repeated requests that Richard prevent the marriage from taking place before a specific family connection becomes public.””

Charles whispered, “Family connection?””

Madison stared at her mother.

Claire shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

The voicemail ended with one final sentence.

“I strongly recommend you speak to Charles Carter before anyone signs a marriage certificate.””

Every eye turned toward Charles.

His face had gone completely white.

Ethan stared at him.

“Dad?””

Charles didn’t answer.

“Who is David Mercer?””

Charles looked at Madison.

Then at Claire.

May you like

Finally, he whispered the truth.

“David Mercer is my older brother.””
