Chapter 6: The Man Behind the Papers
Richard Hale had handled my father’s business for twenty-three years.
Contracts.
Estate planning.
The family trust.
When my father died, Richard had stood beside me at the funeral and told me, “Your dad trusted you more than anyone.””
Now he stood outside a storage unit filled with evidence that my wife had targeted my family before she ever met me.
I stepped in front of Lucas.
“What are you doing here?””
Richard glanced around.
“Same thing you are.””
“Which is?””
“Cleaning up Vanessa’s mess.””
Nathan laughed sharply.
“You expect us to believe that?””
Richard looked at him.
“I don’t care what you believe.””
I held up the folder.
“Did you know about this?””
He sighed.
“I knew some of it.””
My stomach twisted.
“How much?””
“Enough.””
“That isn’t an answer.””
“It’s the answer you’re getting until we leave.””
I stared at him.
“Leave?””
Richard looked toward the entrance.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
Lucas said, “He always says that right before something bad happens.””
Richard’s eyes moved to him.
“You’ve caused enough trouble.””
Lucas went pale.
I noticed.
So did Nathan.
I stepped closer to Richard.
“Don’t talk to him like that.””
Richard smiled faintly.
“You don’t know who he is.””
“I know enough.””
“No, Mark. You really don’t.””
I hated the way he said my name.
Calm.
Patient.
Like he was still the family attorney explaining tax paperwork.
I said, “Then explain.””
Richard looked at the storage unit.
“You found the records.””
“Yes.””
“You found the insurance application?””
“Yes.””
“The trust documents?””
“Yes.””
“And Vanessa’s notes?””
“Yes.””
“Then you already understand most of it.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“I understand that my wife targeted me. I understand she stole from my son. I understand someone forged my signature. What I don’t understand is why you’re standing here.””
Richard’s face lost some of its calm.
“Because I made a mistake.””
Nathan muttered, “That narrows it down.””
Richard ignored him.
“Years ago, your father asked me to investigate Vanessa.””
I froze.
“When?””
“Before you married her.””
The words hit hard.
“My father knew?””
“He suspected.””
“Suspected what?””
“That she was interested in the trust.””
I laughed in disbelief.
“And nobody told me?””
“I did tell you.””
“No, you didn’t.””
Richard looked at me.
“At dinner. Your father said he thought Vanessa was moving too fast. I told you to slow down.””
“That is not the same as telling me she might be targeting the family.””
“No.””
He looked almost ashamed.
“It isn’t.””
Nathan stepped forward.
“Why didn’t Dad stop it?””
Richard turned toward him.
“He tried.””
“How?””
“He changed the trust.””
I thought about the photograph.
The bank.
The beneficiaries.
“What did he change?””
Richard took a long breath.
“Originally, both sons had equal access to principal after forty-five.””
Nathan and I exchanged a glance.
“But after he became suspicious of Vanessa,” Richard continued, “he changed control.””
“To me.””
“Yes.””
That explained why Vanessa needed me.
Not Nathan.
Nathan received money.
I controlled money.
Richard continued.
“Your father also created a protection clause.””
“What kind?””
“If either of you died under suspicious circumstances, spousal access was frozen pending review.””
My blood went cold.
Nathan whispered, “He expected something.””
Richard nodded.
“He was cautious.””
I stared at him.
“And Vanessa knew?””
“Eventually.””
“How?””
Richard looked toward Lucas.
That was enough.
I turned.
Lucas stared at the ground.
“What?””
Richard said, “She found out through him.””
Lucas shook his head.
“No.””
Richard’s voice hardened.
“You accessed my office.””
“I was fourteen.””
“You photographed trust documents.””
“Because Vanessa told me you were hiding my adoption records.””
Richard looked at me.
“There. That’s how she learned.””
Lucas’s eyes filled with anger.
“She lied to me.””
“Yes.””
“Like everyone else.””
Richard’s expression softened for half a second.
Then I remembered something.
“Vanessa told Lucas Nathan was his father.””
Richard nodded.
“She needed a reason to connect him to this family.””
Nathan looked sick.
“So Lucas was another tool.””
Richard said nothing.
Lucas turned away.
I watched him walk toward the edge of the unit.
His shoulders were tight.
For all his mistakes, he had been used as a child.
Just like Ethan was being used now.
I looked back at Richard.
“Who is Lucas’s father?””
Richard went still.
That silence answered more than words.
Lucas turned.
“Tell him.””
Richard said nothing.
Lucas walked toward him.
“You know.””
“Lucas.””
“You always knew.””
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“Not here.””
Lucas laughed.
“Of course.””
Nathan stared at Richard.
Then his face changed.
“Oh my God.””
I followed his eyes.
Same nose.
Same chin.
Same way they stood when angry.
I looked at Lucas.
Then Richard.
“No.””
Richard closed his eyes.
Lucas whispered, “Say it.””
Richard opened them.
“I’m your father.””
No one moved.
Rain hammered the roof.
Lucas stared at him.
“I knew it.””
Richard said, “You suspected.””
“I knew.””
“You didn’t know.””
“I saw the old letters.””
Richard flinched.
Lucas’s voice shook.
“You were sleeping with Vanessa before I was born.””
I stared at Richard.
He looked older suddenly.
“Yes.””
Nathan whispered, “Jesus Christ.””
I stepped back.
This wasn’t a family secret anymore.
It was a web.
Richard.
Vanessa.
Lucas.
Caleb.
Nathan.
Me.
Everyone connected by lies.
I asked the question that mattered.
“Did you help her target me?””
Richard looked offended.
“No.””
“Did you give her information about my father’s trust?””
“No.””
“Did you know she was stealing money?””
“Not until recently.””
“When?””
“Six weeks ago.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I was trying to find out how far it went.””
I laughed.
“That seems to be everyone’s excuse.””
Richard looked toward Lucas.
“When he contacted me, I realized Vanessa had restarted something I thought ended years ago.””
“Restarted what?””
Richard hesitated.
Lucas answered.
“The plan.””
I turned.
“What plan?””
He pointed toward the files.
“ENTRY PLAN wasn’t the only one.””
My chest tightened.
“What else?””
Lucas walked to the cabinet.
He opened the bottom drawer.
Pulled out a thin red folder.
The front had one word.
*EXIT.*
I took it.
Inside were timelines.
Documents.
Contingencies.
One page was titled:
*MARRIAGE END STATES.*
Divorce: undesirable.
Separation: delay access.
Death: trust review risk.
Incapacitation: best option if power of attorney active.
My hands went numb.
I looked at Richard.
“Power of attorney?””
He nodded slowly.
“Your father revoked Vanessa’s access years ago.””
“I never gave her power of attorney.””
“No.””
He looked at the file.
“But someone filed one.””
I flipped pages.
There it was.
A durable power of attorney.
My name.
My signature.
Vanessa named as agent.
Notarized.
I stared at the seal.
Then at Richard.
“You notarized this.””
His face drained.
“No.””
“Your name is on it.””
“That is not my signature.””
I looked closer.
He was right.
It resembled his signature.
But the R was wrong.
Nathan said, “So somebody forged both of you.””
Richard nodded.
“And used my notary information.””
Lucas said, “That’s why he contacted me.””
I looked at Richard.
“You knew about this?””
“Yesterday.””
“From Lucas?””
“Yes.””
“And instead of calling me, you came here.””
“I needed the originals.””
“Why?””
Richard stared at the documents.
“Because copies can be denied.””
My anger returned.
“You still should have called me.””
“Yes.””
At least he admitted it.
I looked at the red folder again.
One line caught my eye.
*Trigger event: international travel.*
I read further.
Temporary medical event abroad.
Spouse gains emergency authority.
Accounts consolidated.
Trust challenge initiated.
I felt sick.
The Cancún trip.
I looked up.
“Vanessa wasn’t planning to kill me.””
Richard shook his head.
“Probably not.””
Nathan said, “That’s supposed to make us feel better?””
Richard continued.
“She needed you alive.””
“Why?””
“Incapacitated people can’t defend themselves.””
A chill moved through me.
I thought about the insurance policy.
The fake power of attorney.
The trip.
The fourth ticket.
“Then what was Lucas supposed to do?””
Lucas answered.
“I was supposed to meet them there.””
“Why?””
“Vanessa said she was finally going to introduce me to you.””
I stared at him.
“As what?””
He shook his head.
“She never said.””
Richard muttered, “Leverage.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“She needed confusion.””
He pointed at Lucas.
“A hidden son. Nathan’s paternity scandal. Fraud. Enough chaos to discredit everyone.””
Nathan frowned.
“Discredit us to whom?””
“The trust board.””
I forgot there even was one.
My father had appointed three independent advisers.
I had never needed them.
Richard continued.
“If Mark became incapacitated and Vanessa produced a valid power of attorney, she could request emergency control.””
“She’d never get it.””
“She wouldn’t need permanent control.””
I understood.
“She only needed time.””
Richard nodded.
“Days.””
“How much could she move?””
“Potentially millions.””
Silence.
Then Ethan’s voice came from outside.
“Dad?””
I spun around.
He stood at the entrance to the row.
My heart nearly stopped.
“I told you to stay in the car.””
“I did.””
“Then why are you here?””
He looked over his shoulder.
“Because someone opened my door.””
Every adult froze.
I ran past him.
The parking lot was empty.
My SUV door stood open.
The interior light glowed.
Nathan’s truck door was open too.
I checked the back seat.
Nothing.
Then Ethan held something out.
“This was on my seat.””
An envelope.
My name on the front.
I tore it open.
Inside was a photograph.
Taken tonight.
Through my kitchen window.
Vanessa standing alone.
And behind her—
a man.
His face hidden.
One hand on her shoulder.
On the back, one sentence had been written.
*She was never the one in charge.*
I looked toward the road.
A pair of taillights disappeared beyond the gate.
Richard whispered, “We need to go.””
I turned.
“You recognize the handwriting.””
He didn’t answer.
“Richard.””
His face had gone white.
“Who wrote this?””
He looked at Lucas.
Then at Nathan.
May you like
Finally at me.
“Your father.””
