Chapter 4: The Fourth Passenger

Nathan backed away from my desk.

“I swear to you, Mark. I have never seen that document.””

Vanessa was still on the floor.

She didn’t defend him.

That worried me more than anything.

Because if Nathan had truly been part of the plan, I expected her to use him.

Blame him.

Expose him.

Instead, she looked terrified of both of us.

I pointed at the list.

“Your name is right there.””

“I can read.””

“Then explain it.””

“I can’t.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“No.”” Nathan shook his head.

“I expect you not to. But I’m telling you the truth.””

Ethan stood near my shoulder.

He had gone very quiet.

I hated that he was in the middle of this.

But every time I thought about sending him upstairs, I remembered how many secrets had survived because adults kept telling him to leave the room.

Not anymore.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Who created that file?””

She whispered, “I don’t know.””

Nathan laughed bitterly.

“Come on.””

She glared at him.

“I don’t.””

“You knew the password.””

“So did you.””

“I knew Lucas’s birthday. That’s not the same thing.””

I looked at Nathan.

“How did you know?””

He hesitated.

“Because I met him.””

That hit me almost as hard as the DNA result.

“When?””

“Seven years ago.””

I glanced at the photograph.

“The bank.””

Nathan nodded.

I held it up.

“So that really is Lucas?””

“Yes.””

“But this boy is a child.””

“No.””

Nathan stepped closer.

“That photograph was manipulated.””

I studied it.

“What do you mean?””

“The body belongs to Lucas when he was young. But that bank background was added later.””

Ethan whispered, “Photoshop.””

Nathan nodded.

“Something like that.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Why?””

No answer.

Nathan continued.

“Vanessa contacted me seven years ago. She said Lucas had found her.””

I stared at my wife.

“You never told me.””

“I was scared.””

“You seem to be scared every time the truth gets close.””

Vanessa looked down.

Nathan said, “Lucas had been adopted by a family in Oregon. When he turned fourteen, he started asking questions about his birth mother.””

“He found Vanessa?””

“Yes.””

“And you?””

Nathan hesitated.

“Eventually.””

“Why?””

His face tightened.

“Because Vanessa told him I was his father.””

I stared at him.

Then I slowly looked at Vanessa.

“You told Lucas Nathan was his father too?””

She said nothing.

Nathan shook his head.

“He isn’t.””

I blinked.

“You tested?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Seven years ago.””

“And?””

“No relation.””

The entire story was becoming impossible to follow.

I walked to the window.

Rain streaked the glass.

Behind me, three people breathed like strangers trapped in the same room.

I turned back.

“So Caleb is probably your son.””

Nathan nodded painfully.

“But Lucas is not.””

“Correct.””

“Yet Vanessa told Lucas you were his father.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Nathan looked at her.

“I never figured that out.””

Vanessa finally spoke.

“Because I needed him to stop asking.””

I stared at her.

“That makes no sense.””

“You don’t know what it was like.””

“Then tell me.””

She stood slowly.

For the first time all night, the arrogance was gone.

She looked exhausted.

“Lucas was born when I was nineteen.””

I said nothing.

“His father disappeared before he was born. My mother made it clear I couldn’t bring a baby home.””

“So you chose adoption.””

“Yes.””

Her voice broke.

“I thought it was the right thing.””

That part, at least, I could understand.

But nothing after it.

She continued.

“When Lucas contacted me, he wanted names. History. Everything.””

“And you lied.””

“I panicked.””

“You gave him Nathan’s name.””

“Yes.””

Nathan shook his head.

“You did more than that.””

Vanessa looked at him sharply.

I caught it.

“What did she do?””

Nathan reached into the envelope he had brought with him.

“I didn’t come here just because she called.””

He pulled out several sheets of paper.

“I came because Lucas contacted me yesterday.””

Vanessa lunged.

“No!””

Nathan raised the papers out of reach.

I stepped between them.

“What did Lucas send you?””

Nathan handed them to me.

They were copies of messages.

Vanessa’s name appeared at the top of each.

I read the first.

*You need to be patient. Mark still controls the trust.*

Second.

*Once the accounts are moved, we can fix everything.*

Third.

*Do not contact Nathan again until I tell you.*

I looked at Vanessa.

“These are yours?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Nathan said, “Lucas says they came from your number.””

“Numbers can be spoofed.””

“Were they?””

“I don’t know.””

I kept reading.

Then I found one that made me stop.

*Cancún is the deadline. After that, Ethan won’t be an issue.*

My vision narrowed.

I held the page in front of Vanessa.

“What does this mean?””

“I didn’t write that.””

“WHAT DOES IT MEAN?””

“I said I didn’t write it!””

Ethan took a step backward.

I immediately lowered my voice.

But I couldn’t lower the rage.

Someone had used my son’s name.

Someone had written that after a certain date, he “wouldn’t be an issue.””

Nathan pointed toward the desk.

“This is why I came.””

I stared at him.

“Lucas sent those to you?””

“Yes.””

“Why not to me?””

“He said he was afraid.””

“Of Vanessa?””

Nathan looked at her.

“Of whoever is using her name.””

That changed the room.

Even Vanessa looked confused.

I looked at the papers again.

“If Vanessa didn’t send these—”

“I didn’t.””

“Then someone wants us to think she did.””

Vanessa nodded rapidly.

“Yes.””

I stared at her.

“That doesn’t clear you.””

Her face fell.

“You still stole money.””

Silence.

“You still used Ethan’s identity.””

Silence.

“You still accessed my email.””

Silence.

“And you still forged my signature on something.””

“I did not forge your signature.””

I pointed at the life insurance form.

“Then who did?””

“I don’t know.””

Nathan muttered, “There’s a lot you don’t know tonight.””

Vanessa snapped, “Shut up.””

I looked back at the insurance policy.

Something bothered me.

“Why would Lucas be the beneficiary?””

Nobody answered.

I checked the policy amount.

Two million dollars.

My blood ran cold.

I had carried life insurance for years.

But this was a new policy.

Submitted eleven days ago.

Two million dollars.

With a forged signature.

A hidden beneficiary.

A vacation deadline.

And a document saying Nathan “handles the rest.””

I grabbed my phone.

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

“Who are you calling?””

“The police.””

“No.””

That answer came too quickly.

Nathan and I both looked at her.

I said, “Why not?””

“Because you don’t understand.””

“Then make me understand.””

She started crying again.

“Please.””

“Who are you protecting?””

“No one.””

“Wrong.””

Ethan suddenly spoke.

“Dad.””

I turned.

He had picked up one of the plane tickets from the hallway floor.

“What?””

“There are four.””

I frowned.

“There were three.””

“I know.””

He held up another page.

“This was stuck behind Vanessa’s ticket.””

Vanessa stopped breathing.

I walked toward him.

It was another boarding pass.

Same flight.

Same date.

Same destination.

The passenger name was partially obscured by a printed travel receipt folded across it.

I pulled the papers apart.

The name appeared.

LUCAS BENNETT.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You bought him a ticket.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“The reservation is under your name.””

“I didn’t.””

Nathan snatched the ticket from my hand.

“He’s going to Cancún?””

Vanessa whispered, “I didn’t book that.””

I examined the confirmation number.

Same reservation.

Four passengers.

Me.

Vanessa.

Caleb.

Lucas.

Ethan had been deliberately excluded.

My son was supposed to stay home while Vanessa took a man I had never met.

A man named as beneficiary on a fraudulent life insurance policy.

I felt sick.

Nathan looked at Vanessa.

“You told me Lucas disappeared.””

“He did.””

“When?””

“Three months ago.””

I froze.

“What do you mean disappeared?””

She hugged herself.

“He stopped answering me.””

“You said he contacted you years ago.””

“He did.””

“And you stayed in contact?””

“Sometimes.””

“Until three months ago?””

“Yes.””

Nathan looked stunned.

“You told me he wanted nothing to do with you.””

“I lied.””

“Obviously.””

I took a breath.

“Why did he stop answering?””

Vanessa stared at the floor.

“I don’t know.””

“Did you report him missing?””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because he’s twenty-one. Adults stop talking to their parents.””

“You’re not his parent when it’s convenient and his mother when it isn’t.””

She flinched.

Then her phone rang.

Everyone stopped.

The sound came from the floor near the hallway.

One of the two phones that had spilled from her purse.

Vanessa stared at it.

The screen lit up.

No caller ID.

She didn’t move.

It rang again.

I picked it up.

“Don’t,” she whispered.

I answered.

“Hello?””

Silence.

Then breathing.

Male.

Young.

“Who is this?””

Another pause.

Then a voice whispered, “Is Vanessa there?””

I looked at her.

She looked like she might collapse.

“Who’s asking?””

The young man ignored me.

“Tell her the trip is off.””

My grip tightened.

“Lucas?””

Silence.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

I stepped into the hallway.

“If you’re Lucas, listen to me. My name is Mark.””

“I know who you are.””

“Where are you?””

“I can’t tell you.””

“Are you in danger?””

He laughed once.

It sounded terrified.

“You are.””

I looked toward Ethan.

My heart started pounding.

“What does that mean?””

“Check the fourth ticket.””

“I did.””

“No.””

His voice dropped.

“Check the back.””

I grabbed the boarding pass from Nathan.

Turned it over.

Nothing.

Then I noticed a thin sticker covering the lower half.

I peeled it away.

Underneath was handwritten text.

An address.

And a time.

*11:30 PM. Come alone.*

I looked at the clock.

10:47.

“Lucas,” I said, “what happens at that address?””

His breathing became shaky.

“You find out why Vanessa needed Ethan to stay home.””

My blood went cold.

Behind me, Vanessa whispered, “Mark, hang up.””

Lucas heard her.

His voice changed.

“She's there?””

“Yes.””

“Then don’t believe anything she tells you.””

Vanessa rushed toward the phone.

“He’s lying!””

Lucas shouted through the speaker.

“Ask her about the storage unit!””

I stared at Vanessa.

She stopped.

I remembered Daniel’s investigation.

The private storage facility.

The same area as the post office box.

I asked, “What’s in the unit?””

Lucas went silent.

“Lucas?””

Then he whispered four words.

“Your son’s real documents.””

I looked at Ethan.

“What documents?””

But Lucas kept talking.

“And Mark?””

“Yes?””

“The account in Ethan’s name wasn’t opened eighteen months ago.””

I felt the floor disappear beneath me.

“What are you talking about?””

“It was reopened eighteen months ago.””

My mouth went dry.

“Reopened from when?””

There was a long silence.

May you like

Then Lucas said, “From the year Ethan was born.””

The call disconnected.
