Chapter 9: The Family Secret My Mother Took to Her Grave
I stared at the envelope in my hands.
My aunt.
A person I had never met.
A person whose existence had somehow been erased from my entire childhood.
I looked at my father.
His face told me everything before he spoke.
He knew.
“Dad?””
He didn’t answer.
That hurt more than if he had denied it.
Because silence was becoming his favorite confession.
“Why didn’t you tell me I had an aunt?””
My father sat down slowly.
“Emma…”
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
But firm.
“I need the truth.””
Vanessa looked uncomfortable.
“This is getting ridiculous.””
I turned toward her.
“No. What’s ridiculous is that I spent ten years believing I knew my own family.””
Nobody spoke.
Robert gently placed his hand on the table.
“Emma, your mother wanted this revealed only after you had control of your own life.””
“Why?””
“Because she didn’t want anyone influencing your decision.””
I looked at the envelope.
My mother had planned everything.
Not because she wanted control.
Because she knew people around me might try to rewrite the truth.
I opened it.
The letter inside was written in a different handwriting.
Older.
Less familiar.
But the first sentence made my heart race.
“Dear Emma,
You don’t know me, but I have loved you since the day you were born.””
I stopped.
My eyes filled.
Someone in my mother’s family had loved me.
Someone I never knew existed.
The letter continued.
“My name is Claire. I am your mother’s older sister.””
I looked up.
My father looked away.
“Why?”” I whispered.
Robert answered.
“Because Daniel and your mother had a falling out with her family before you were born.””
I looked at my father.
“Is that true?””
He nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He rubbed his hands together.
“Your mother and her sister disagreed about the company.””
“That’s it?””
He hesitated.
And I knew there was more.
Robert spoke.
“Your mother’s family wanted her to continue running the company. They believed she was wasting her talent by living a quieter life.””
“And my mother?””
“She wanted a normal family.””
I looked down.
That sounded exactly like her.
She never cared about being wealthy.
She cared about being present.
“But why did I never meet Claire?””
My father closed his eyes.
“Because after your mother got sick…”
He stopped.
I waited.
“Your mother asked me not to contact her.””
My heart dropped.
“Why?””
“Because she was afraid.””
“Of what?””
My father looked at me.
“That your aunt would take you away.””
I frowned.
“What?””
He continued quietly.
“Your mother believed Claire loved you. But she also knew Claire thought she could provide a better life for you.””
I looked at the letter.
That made sense.
Two people who loved my mother.
Two people who wanted to protect me.
But they chose different paths.
“Did Mom hate her?””
My father shook his head.
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
“She missed her.””
That surprised me.
“Then why?””
My father looked broken.
“Because sometimes people hurt each other when they are scared.””
For the first time, I saw my father not as the man who failed me.
But as someone who had also been trapped by his own mistakes.
Still, that didn’t erase what happened.
I kept reading.
The next part of Claire’s letter explained everything.
“Emma, your father asked me to stay away after your mother passed away. He told me you needed stability. I believed him.””
My fingers froze.
“He told me you were happy.””
I looked at my father.
“Happy?””
He looked ashamed.
Claire continued.
“I believed him until I received a letter from Robert years later explaining your mother’s trust.””
My eyes widened.
“She knew?””
“Yes,” Robert said.
“She knew Daniel was struggling. She knew Vanessa had influence over him. She asked me to wait.””
I kept reading.
“She told me, ‘Emma must discover her own strength. But if the day comes when she feels abandoned, make sure she knows she was never alone.’”
I covered my mouth.
My mother.
Even when everyone else failed.
She was still protecting me.
The letter ended with a phone number.
A number belonging to my aunt.
I stared at it.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
My heart jumped.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice came through.
Soft.
Emotional.
“Emma?””
I couldn’t speak.
“I know this is a lot.””
My eyes filled.
“Aunt Claire?””
There was a long pause.
Then I heard her cry.
“Yes.””
For a moment, neither of us said anything.
Then she whispered:
“I have wanted to say that word to you for ten years.””
I closed my eyes.
“Why didn’t you?””
“Because your father asked me not to interfere.””
I looked at Daniel.
His eyes filled with regret.
Claire continued.
“But I never stopped watching from a distance.””
A strange feeling filled my chest.
Someone had been there.
Someone had cared.
“You should know something,” Claire said.
“What?””
“Your mother left another message.””
I froze.
“What message?””
“One she wanted you to hear after you made your choice.””
I looked around the room.
“I already made my choice.””
Claire was quiet.
“No, Emma.””
My heart slowed.
“What do you mean?””
She whispered:
“You chose whether to keep the house.””
A pause.
“But your mother’s final message was about whether you should keep the family.””
I felt a chill.
“Where is it?””
Claire answered:
“With me.””
I stood.
“Can I see it?””
There was silence.
May you like
Then she said:
“I’ve been waiting ten years for you to ask.””
