Chapter 2: The Secret My Mother Left Behind

I stood on the porch for almost a full minute without speaking.

The man on the phone waited patiently.

Behind me, through the front window, I could see my father, Vanessa, and Lily sitting at the dinner table.

They looked like a perfect family.

A family celebrating their victory.

They had no idea that the person standing outside their house was about to discover the truth they had spent years hiding.

“Who is this?”” I finally asked.

The man took a slow breath.

“My name is Robert Hayes.””

The name sounded familiar.

I searched through my memories.

Then I remembered.

My mother used to mention him.

Not often.

But enough.

“He was my mother’s lawyer,” I whispered.

“Yes,” Robert replied.

“And I have been waiting for you to call me.””

My heart started beating faster.

“Why?””

There was a pause.

Then he said, “Because your mother knew this day might come.””

I looked back at the house.

“Come?””

“Yes, Emma. Your mother knew that after she passed away, things might change.””

My throat tightened.

I hated that he was right.

My mother always saw things before they happened.

She was the kind of person who noticed a crack in a wall before anyone else saw the damage.

“She left instructions,” Robert continued.

“But they were very specific.””

“What instructions?””

“You were only supposed to hear them if you were ever removed from your home against your will.””

I stared at the front door.

Removed.

That was exactly what Vanessa had done.

She didn’t physically push me out.

She didn’t need to.

She made sure I understood I wasn’t wanted.

“What did my mother leave me?”” I asked.

Robert lowered his voice.

“Everything she legally owned.””

I froze.

“That’s impossible.””

“No, Emma. It isn’t.””

I sat down on the porch steps.

“My mother didn’t have anything.””

That was what my father always told me.

After she died, he said there were debts.

He said the house was his.

He said everything needed to be sold or managed by him because I was too young.

I believed him.

I was eight years old.

I didn’t know anything about money or legal documents.

Robert sighed.

“Your mother trusted your father once.””

The way he said it made my stomach drop.

“What does that mean?””

“It means there are things you were never told.””

The front door suddenly opened behind me.

I turned around.

My father stood there.

His expression was different now.

Less confident.

More worried.

“Emma, who are you talking to?””

I stood up slowly.

“No one.””

His eyes moved to the phone in my hand.

“You’re leaving?””

I looked at him.

“I thought that was what everyone wanted.””

His face tightened.

“That’s not what I meant.””

For the first time that night, he looked unsure.

I almost believed him.

Almost.

Then Vanessa appeared behind him.

“Daniel, don’t start feeling guilty now.””

She looked at my suitcase.

“She made her choice.””

I watched my father look between us.

And I realized something painful.

He wasn’t angry because he had lost me.

He was afraid because he might lose control.

Robert was still on the phone.

“Emma,” he said quietly, “I need you to come to my office tomorrow morning.””

I looked at the house where I had grown up.

The place where my mother’s memory lived.

The place where I was treated like a guest.

“Why?””

Robert answered.

“Because I need to show you the documents your father signed ten years ago.””

My blood ran cold.

“What documents?””

There was silence.

Then Robert said:

“The documents that prove your father never had full control over that house.””

I stopped breathing.

My father’s face changed.

He didn’t hear Robert’s words.

But he saw mine.

And somehow, he knew.

“Emma,” he said softly, “who are you talking to?””

I stared at him.

For the first time in years, I didn’t feel like the child standing in front of her father.

I felt like someone who finally had the truth on her side.

I ended the call.

May you like

Then I asked the question I had been too afraid to ask for a decade.

“Dad… what did Mom leave me that you never told me about?””
