Chapter 9: What Was Hidden Beneath the Floor

“I'm coming with you.””

Daniel's voice left no room for argument.

Detective Bennett shook her head.

“Mr. Carter, this is an active investigation. You need to remain here.””

“Someone is trying to sell my father's property. I have a right to know what's inside.””

“You have a right to know. That doesn't mean you should interfere with evidence.””

Evelyn approached.

“Daniel, she's right.””

He turned toward his mother.

“You knew about the lake house?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Robert used to keep important family records there. After Sarah died, he moved several boxes into the basement.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I didn't know which documents he had left behind.””

Detective Bennett received another call.

She listened for a moment.

Then her expression changed.

“Richard's vehicle has been spotted near the lake house.””

Daniel immediately reached for his coat.

“Then we're going.””

The detective sighed.

“I'll have officers accompany us. You will stay behind the police line unless I authorize otherwise.””

Daniel nodded.

Within twenty minutes, they were driving toward the property.

The lake house stood at the end of a narrow road surrounded by tall oak trees. It had belonged to the Carter family for nearly forty years.

Sarah had loved the place.

Daniel remembered her sitting on the wooden porch with Ethan in her arms, watching the sun disappear behind the water.

He hadn't visited since the accident.

The memories were too painful.

As their vehicles approached, they saw a black SUV parked beside the garage.

Richard's SUV.

Two police officers were already outside.

Richard stood near the entrance, speaking angrily into his phone.

When he noticed Daniel, his expression changed.

“Danny?””

Daniel stepped out of the vehicle.

“What are you doing here?””

Richard slipped his phone into his pocket.

“Inspecting the property.””

“At midnight?””

“It's a family asset. I don't need permission to inspect it.””

Detective Bennett approached.

“Mr. Carter, we need to speak with you.””

Richard's expression hardened.

“About what?””

“Your connection to Michael Grant.””

Richard laughed.

“I have no idea what you're talking about.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Dad's recording says otherwise.””

Richard's face changed.

For one brief second, the confident businessman looked genuinely frightened.

Then he recovered.

“Dad was sick. You can't believe everything he said.””

“He knew about the stolen money.””

Richard sighed.

“Daniel, listen. There were financial decisions made years ago. Your father didn't understand how complicated the investments had become.””

“You stole from Ethan.””

“I protected the family business.””

“You stole from a child!””

Richard raised his voice.

“Do you have any idea how much money I put into keeping this family wealthy?””

Daniel stared at him.

“My son doesn't owe you anything.””

Richard shook his head.

“Your son? That boy has been the center of every problem since Sarah died.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Take that back.””

Richard continued.

“Sarah was always asking questions. She wanted to control everything. She was going to destroy the family business.””

Detective Bennett raised her hand.

“Mr. Carter, I suggest you stop speaking until your attorney arrives.””

Richard laughed bitterly.

“Why? Because your investigation is going to prove nothing?””

At that moment, one of the officers called from inside the house.

“Detective! You need to see this!””

Bennett entered immediately.

Daniel followed until an officer stopped him.

“Sir, stay here.””

Through the open doorway, Daniel could see a large wooden cabinet had been moved away from the basement wall.

Behind it was a narrow door.

Richard's face went pale.

“That's private property.””

The detective looked back.

“Then you won't mind explaining what's behind it.””

Richard didn't answer.

The officers opened the hidden door.

Inside was a small storage room.

Several cardboard boxes sat against the walls. Old photographs covered a table. A metal filing cabinet stood in the corner.

Daniel recognized Sarah's handwriting on one of the boxes.

*ETHAN — FUTURE.*

His throat tightened.

“That's my wife's handwriting.””

Detective Bennett put on gloves and opened the box.

Inside were bank statements, handwritten notes, and a small digital recorder.

She examined the documents.

Then she looked toward Daniel.

“Mr. Carter, I think we found what your father was looking for.””

She lifted a sealed envelope.

On the front were the words:

*IF SARAH CANNOT SPEAK, LET THIS PROTECT HER SON.*

Daniel felt his legs weaken.

He carefully took the envelope when the detective offered it.

Inside was a letter from Sarah.

He recognized her handwriting immediately.

My darling Daniel,

If you're reading this, something has gone terribly wrong. I wanted to tell you everything, but I was afraid of what might happen if I confronted the people involved.

Daniel stopped reading.

His eyes filled.

He continued.

I discovered that money intended for Ethan has been moved without my permission. I also found evidence that someone has been accessing our family records.

I believe Vanessa is involved, but I cannot prove how much she knows.

There is something else. Michael told me that Richard had been helping him move money through the family business.

Daniel looked toward his brother.

Richard was staring at the ground.

Daniel continued reading.

I don't want Ethan growing up surrounded by lies. If anything happens to me, please make sure he knows that I loved him more than anything.

And Daniel, please forgive yourself. None of this is your fault.

The letter ended with a sentence that made Daniel collapse into a chair.

I was planning to tell you about your daughter. I wanted us to choose her name together.

Daniel covered his face.

For six years, he had believed Sarah's death was an unavoidable tragedy.

Now he was holding her final words.

Detective Bennett carefully opened another folder.

“This contains copies of the original financial records.””

She examined a handwritten ledger.

Then she looked at Richard.

“Your name appears on several transfers.””

Richard shook his head.

“Those records are meaningless.””

“What about this?””

She showed him a photocopy of a signed agreement.

It authorized Michael Grant to access the family's financial accounts through a company controlled by Richard.

Richard stepped backward.

“That signature is forged.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Is everything forged in this family?””

Richard's jaw tightened.

“You think you're better than me because Dad gave you everything?””

Daniel stared.

“What?””

Richard began speaking faster.

“Dad gave you the company. He gave you the house. He gave you the family name. I spent thirty years working for him while you got to play the perfect husband and father.””

“So you stole from my son because you were jealous?””

“I deserved my share!””

“You could have asked.””

Richard laughed.

“You would never have given it to me.””

Detective Bennett signaled to the officers.

“Mr. Carter, you're coming with us for questioning.””

Richard suddenly turned toward Daniel.

“You still don't understand. Vanessa wasn't the mastermind.””

Daniel's stomach tightened.

“What are you saying?””

Richard looked directly into his eyes.

“Michael wasn't the one who planned Sarah's final meeting.””

The detective stepped closer.

“Who did?””

Richard hesitated.

Then he pointed at the envelope in Daniel's hands.

“Read the second letter.””

Daniel looked down.

There was another folded page hidden beneath Sarah's letter.

He opened it.

The handwriting was different.

It belonged to Robert.

Daniel,

If Richard is ever exposed, remember that he was not working alone. Someone else in this family knew exactly what happened to Sarah.

Daniel looked up.

“Who?””

Richard began laughing.

“You really want to know?””

Detective Bennett stepped forward.

“Answer the question.””

Richard's expression turned cold.

“Ask your mother why she deleted the first emergency call from the night Sarah died.””

Daniel felt the world stop.

“My mother?””

Richard nodded.

“She received a call from Sarah before the accident. Sarah told her she was being followed. But Evelyn didn't call the police.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

Richard smiled bitterly.

“Ask her what she was afraid Sarah would tell you.””

Detective Bennett immediately called another officer.

“Locate Evelyn Carter. I need to speak with her.””

Daniel looked at Sarah's letter.

Then at Richard.

Then at the detective.

He suddenly remembered something his father had said in the recording.

Never let her separate him from the truth about his mother.

The question was no longer whether Vanessa had lied.

Or whether Richard had stolen money.

The question was why everyone who claimed to love Sarah had kept something from Daniel.

And whether his mother had been protecting Ethan…

Or protecting herself.

His phone rang.

It was Evelyn.

Daniel answered immediately.

“Mother, where are you?””

Her voice was shaking.

“Daniel, listen to me. You need to come home.””

“What happened?””

A long silence followed.

Then Evelyn whispered:

“Vanessa has escaped.””

Daniel straightened.

“What?””

“She took Madison and Tyler. But that's not the worst part.””

Daniel's stomach tightened.

“What could be worse?””

Evelyn began crying.

“Ethan is gone.””

Daniel dropped the phone.

For six years, he had already lost one person he loved because of secrets.

He wasn't going to lose his son too.

May you like

Not tonight.

Not ever.
