Chapter 6: The Witness Nobody Expected
Daniel gripped the edge of the table.
“Michael Grant was following Sarah the night she died?””
Victor nodded.
“According to the original witness statement.””
“Then why wasn't he questioned?””
“The witness claimed that the vehicle disappeared before the police arrived. The officer handling the report classified the information as inconclusive.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“Your father never saw that version of the report.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because the copy Robert received had the witness statement removed.””
Victor placed his phone on the table.
“The investigator just sent me a scanned copy of the original.””
Daniel picked it up.
The statement was dated six years earlier.
It described a dark SUV following Sarah's vehicle along a narrow road outside town.
The witness had seen the SUV accelerate just before Sarah's car crossed the intersection.
There was no proof of contact between the vehicles.
But the witness had written something else.
The driver appeared to be a man wearing a dark baseball cap.
And the vehicle's license plate was partially visible.
Victor enlarged the image.
“Look at the last four digits.””
Daniel stared.
He recognized them.
The SUV belonged to the Carter family.
His stomach dropped.
“That was my vehicle.””
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
He looked at her.
“Who was driving it?””
“I don't remember.””
“Who had access to it?””
“You did. I did. The housekeeper sometimes moved it.””
“Did Michael have access?””
Vanessa hesitated.
That hesitation answered more than words could.
Daniel's voice became dangerously quiet.
“Did you give him my car?””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“I didn't know what he was planning.””
Evelyn stood.
“Then you knew he was involved?””
Vanessa turned toward her.
“You don't understand what happened!””
“Then tell us!””
Vanessa sank into a chair.
For the first time since dinner began, she looked less like the powerful woman who controlled the household and more like someone whose carefully constructed world was collapsing.
“I met Michael before I met Daniel,” she began.
“We were business partners. We had investments together, and things went wrong.””
Victor folded his arms.
“That's not what the records say.””
Vanessa glared at him.
“Stay out of this.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“What happened with Sarah?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I never wanted her dead.””
The room went silent.
Daniel slowly stood.
“What did you just say?””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Evelyn whispered, “Oh, my God.””
Vanessa began crying.
“I never wanted anything to happen to her!””
Daniel stared at his wife.
“Why would you say that unless you knew something?””
She shook her head repeatedly.
“I only wanted her to stop investigating the money.””
Daniel's face lost all color.
“You knew she was investigating?””
“Yes.””
“And you told Michael?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
Daniel slammed his hand against the table.
“DID YOU TELL HIM?””
“Yes!”” she screamed.
“I told him she was asking questions. But I never told him to hurt her!””
Ethan began crying.
Daniel immediately turned toward him.
“Ethan, go upstairs with Grandma.””
The boy shook his head.
“I don't want to leave you.””
Evelyn gently took his hand.
“Come with me, sweetheart. Your father needs to handle something.””
Ethan looked at Vanessa.
“Did you hurt my mommy?””
Vanessa couldn't look at him.
“Ethan…”
“Did you?””
Daniel knelt in front of his son.
“Go with Grandma. I promise I'll tell you the truth when I know it.””
Evelyn led Ethan out of the dining room.
When they disappeared upstairs, Daniel turned back.
“Start from the beginning.””
Vanessa wiped her face.
“Michael and I were struggling financially. We had debts. I found out about Sarah's investment account and told Michael there might be an opportunity to recover some of the money.””
“Recover money that belonged to a child?””
“I thought we could replace it later!””
Victor shook his head.
“That is not how the transactions were structured.””
Vanessa ignored him.
“Sarah discovered the transfers. She confronted me two days before the accident. She threatened to report everything.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“And what did you do?””
“I called Michael.””
“What did you tell him?””
“I told him Sarah was going to the police.””
Daniel stared at her.
“And he followed her.””
Vanessa nodded weakly.
“I found out afterward.””
“Afterward?””
She began sobbing.
“I didn't know he would go that far!””
Daniel stepped backward.
For six years, he had believed his wife had died because of a tragic accident.
Now he was learning that someone had known about the danger surrounding her.
Someone had stayed silent.
Someone had entered his home afterward and helped raise the child whose inheritance she had tried to steal.
“You let me believe it was an accident,” Daniel whispered.
Vanessa looked up.
“I was scared.””
“You watched me cry at her grave.””
“I was scared!””
“You watched Ethan grow up without his mother!””
Vanessa covered her face.
“I wanted to tell you.””
“But you didn't.””
Daniel picked up his phone.
“I'm calling the police.””
Vanessa immediately stood.
“No! Daniel, please!””
“Sit down.””
“Think about Madison and Tyler!””
“Don't use your children to protect yourself.””
“They need their mother!””
“And my son needed his!””
Vanessa lunged toward him.
“You can't send me to prison! You don't have proof I planned anything!””
Victor stepped forward.
“Actually, we may have more than you think.””
He opened another folder.
Inside were printed emails recovered from an archived company account.
The first was dated two days before Sarah's accident.
The sender was Vanessa.
The recipient was Michael Grant.
The subject line read:
*Sarah knows. Handle it before she destroys everything.*
Daniel stared at the message.
Victor opened the second email.
Michael had replied:
*I know what needs to be done. Make sure the boy's father doesn't find out about the account.*
Daniel felt sick.
He looked at Vanessa.
“You knew.””
She shook her head.
“I didn't mean—”
“Stop talking.””
Victor continued scrolling.
Then he stopped at a message dated three weeks after Sarah's funeral.
Vanessa had written:
*The father is vulnerable now. I can get close to him. Once we're married, we'll have access to everything.*
Daniel slowly sat down.
The woman who had comforted him after Sarah's death had apparently been discussing how to use his grief to enter his family.
Evelyn returned to the dining room alone.
“Ethan is in his bedroom,” she said softly.
“He's asking whether his mother would be proud of him.””
Daniel covered his face.
Then he looked up.
“Mother, please stay with him.””
Evelyn nodded.
Daniel turned toward Victor.
“Send every document to the police and my attorney.””
Victor gathered the records.
“I will.””
Vanessa suddenly rushed toward the front door.
But before she reached it, the doorbell rang.
Daniel froze.
Evelyn looked toward the entrance.
“Who is that?””
Victor checked his phone.
His expression changed.
“It's the investigator.””
Daniel walked toward the door and opened it.
A middle-aged woman in a dark coat stood outside, holding a folder.
“Mr. Carter?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Detective Laura Bennett. I've been reviewing your father's private investigation files.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Why are you here?””
She glanced over his shoulder.
“Because we found Michael Grant.””
Vanessa grabbed the banister.
Detective Bennett continued.
“He was arrested this afternoon in connection with an unrelated financial fraud investigation. During questioning, he made a statement about Sarah Carter's death.””
Daniel's heart began pounding.
“What did he say?””
The detective opened her folder.
“He claims Vanessa wasn't the only person who knew about Sarah's plans that night.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Who else?””
The detective looked directly into the dining room.
Then she said something that made Evelyn drop her cane.
“He claims someone inside the Carter family helped him arrange the meeting with Sarah.””
Daniel turned slowly toward his mother.

Evelyn's face had gone completely white.
And for the first time that evening, she looked afraid of what might come next.
