Chapter 5: The Night Ethan Lost His Mother
Daniel couldn't take his eyes off the medical report.
His first wife, Sarah, had died six years earlier in a car accident on a rainy Thursday evening.
He remembered the phone call.
He remembered driving to the hospital.
He remembered the doctor telling him that there had been nothing anyone could do.
And he remembered holding three-year-old Ethan while explaining that Mommy wasn't coming home.
For six years, he had lived with that grief.
Now his mother was telling him that the accident might not have happened the way he had been told.
“Mother,” Daniel whispered, “what does this report mean?””
Evelyn pulled out a chair.
“Sit down, son.””
“I don't want to sit down. I want answers.””
She nodded.
“Then listen carefully.””
Evelyn explained that Robert had become suspicious after receiving an anonymous letter two years after Sarah's death.
The letter claimed that Sarah had attempted to contact someone shortly before the accident.
Robert had initially dismissed it.
But the writer included a copy of Sarah's appointment schedule from the week she died.
One appointment had been crossed out.
It was scheduled with a lawyer.
“What lawyer?”” Daniel asked.
“Margaret Lewis. She handled Sarah's personal estate.””
Daniel frowned.
“I never knew Sarah had an appointment with her.””
“Because the appointment was canceled.””
“By whom?””
Evelyn looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
“Don't look at me.””
Evelyn continued.
“Robert hired someone to investigate. He discovered that Sarah had been preparing to change her will.””
Daniel felt his stomach tighten.
“Why?””
“Because she had discovered irregularities involving money that belonged to Ethan.””
Daniel looked down at the bank statements.
“His inheritance?””
“No. Something that happened before your father created the trust.””
Evelyn took a breath.
“Sarah had inherited money from her own parents. She placed it in an investment account intended for Ethan's education. Shortly before her death, she discovered that money had disappeared.””
Daniel shook his head.
“That's impossible. Sarah never mentioned anything.””
“She probably didn't want to worry you.””
Vanessa suddenly interrupted.
“This is absurd. Sarah was terrible with money. She probably made a mistake.””
Daniel turned sharply.
“Don't you dare speak about Sarah like that.””
Vanessa raised both hands.
“I'm just saying what everyone knew.””
Evelyn leaned forward.
“Sarah was an excellent mother and a careful woman. She kept records of every deposit. She discovered that someone had been moving money from her account into a company registered under a different name.””
Daniel looked at Victor.
“Can you trace those transfers?””
Victor opened his laptop.
“I can try. If the accounts are still active, there may be a record.””
Vanessa walked toward the hallway.
“I'm leaving.””
Daniel moved in front of her.
“Not yet.””
“You cannot keep me here!””
“I'm not keeping you anywhere. But you're going to stop running away from every question.””
She looked at him with open hatred.
“You've always been weak, Daniel. Your father controlled your life. Now your mother controls it. And you're letting a little boy turn you against your wife.””
Ethan flinched.
Daniel's expression changed instantly.
“Never call my son a problem again.””
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
“He's the reason this family has never been normal.””
Ethan quietly stood.
“Dad, I'm sorry.””
Daniel turned.
“Why are you apologizing?””
“Because everybody is fighting because of me.””
Daniel knelt and placed both hands on his son's shoulders.
“No, Ethan. Listen to me. None of this is your fault.””
“But Vanessa said—”
“She was wrong.””
Ethan's eyes filled.
“Grandpa wanted me to have money?””
“Yes.””
“Did Grandma Sarah want me to have money too?””
Daniel swallowed hard.
“She wanted you to have everything good in this world.””
Ethan looked at the medical report.
“Then why did she leave?””
Daniel pulled him into a hug.
“I don't know, sweetheart. But I'm going to find out.””
At that moment, Victor's laptop made a notification sound.
He looked at the screen.
“Daniel, I found something.””
Everyone turned.
Victor had located an old transfer record connected to Sarah's education account.
The money had been moved into a company called Grant Financial Solutions.
Daniel recognized the name.
“Michael Grant?””
Victor nodded.
“It's the same man from your father's photographs.””
Evelyn covered her mouth.
Victor continued.
“There are three transactions. One occurred six months before Sarah's accident. Another occurred two months before. The final transaction was processed just four days before she died.””
Daniel stared at the screen.
“How much?””
Victor turned the laptop toward him.
“Eighty-five thousand dollars.””
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“Who authorized it?””
Victor zoomed in on the scanned document.
The signature appeared at the bottom.
Daniel leaned closer.
It was Sarah's name.
But he immediately noticed something strange.
“That's not her signature.””
Victor nodded.
“I suspected that.””
Evelyn looked toward Vanessa.
“Do you still want to pretend you know nothing?””
Vanessa's face had become expressionless.
Then she slowly smiled.
“You're all making a terrible mistake.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What does that mean?””
“You think you can blame me for everything because I'm not Ethan's mother?””
“This has nothing to do with that.””
“It has everything to do with it!””
She pointed toward Ethan.
“Sarah wasn't the perfect woman you think she was. She had secrets too.””
Daniel stood.
“Stop.””
But Vanessa continued.
“She was planning to leave you.””
The room fell silent.
Daniel's face tightened.
“What?””
Vanessa nodded.
“She had already spoken to a divorce attorney. She wanted custody of Ethan and half of everything you owned.””
Daniel stared at her.
“You're lying.””
“Ask Evelyn.””
Daniel turned toward his mother.
Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.
“Sarah did speak to a lawyer,” she admitted.
“But she wasn't planning to take your money. She was preparing to leave because she had discovered something she couldn't safely discuss with you.””
Daniel looked stunned.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because Robert asked me not to until we had proof.””
Vanessa laughed.
“Convenient.””
Evelyn ignored her.
“Sarah believed someone close to the family was stealing from Ethan. She wanted to protect him.””
Daniel looked at the transfer records again.
“Did she know it was Vanessa?””
Evelyn didn't answer immediately.
Then she reached into her handbag and removed a small photograph.
It showed Sarah standing outside a coffee shop.
She was speaking to Vanessa.
The date was printed on the back.
It was two days before the accident.
Daniel took the photograph with shaking hands.
“Where did you get this?””
“Your father found it among Sarah's belongings.””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“Why were you meeting my wife?””
Vanessa's expression finally broke.
“I was helping her.””
“Helping her with what?””
“She asked me for advice.””
“About the missing money?””
Vanessa said nothing.
Evelyn placed another document on the table.
“This was inside the same envelope.””
It was a handwritten note.
Daniel recognized Sarah's handwriting immediately.
He read it aloud.
“If anything happens to me, please make sure Ethan never ends up with Vanessa. She knows what happened to the money, and I believe she knows who is behind it.””
Daniel stopped breathing for a moment.
Ethan looked up at him.
“Dad?””
Daniel slowly lowered the paper.
Vanessa suddenly reached for the note.
But Daniel pulled it away.
“Don't touch it!””
She began crying.
“You don't understand!””
“Then explain!””
Vanessa looked at Daniel, then at Evelyn.
Finally, her eyes settled on Ethan.
And she said something that made the boy step backward.
“Your mother should have minded her own business.””
Daniel's face turned terrifyingly cold.
Before he could respond, Victor's phone rang.
He answered, listened for several seconds, and then stood.
“Daniel, I've just received a message from the investigator who handled your father's case.””
“What did he find?””
Victor looked toward Vanessa.
“He located the original police report from Sarah's accident.””
Daniel's hands trembled.
“And?””
Victor swallowed.
“The report mentions a witness who saw another vehicle following Sarah's car that night.””
Evelyn whispered, “Who?””
Victor looked at Vanessa.
“The witness identified the driver.””
May you like
Then he read the name.
“Michael Grant.””
