Chapter 3: The Man at the Front Door

The doorbell rang again.

Daniel remained beside the dining table, one hand gripping the property transfer agreement.

Vanessa stood frozen near her chair.

Madison and Tyler exchanged frightened looks.

Ethan quietly held his father's hand.

“Dad,” he whispered, “who's coming?””

Daniel looked down.

“I don't know yet, buddy.””

Evelyn pushed herself upright, leaning on her cane.

“I'll get it.””

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

“No!””

Everyone turned.

Evelyn raised an eyebrow.

“Why not?””

“Because nobody needs to come into this house.””

“Interesting,” Evelyn replied.

“You seemed perfectly comfortable inviting him here when you thought nobody knew.””

Daniel moved between them.

“Who is it, Vanessa?””

She pressed her lips together.

“It's nobody.””

The doorbell rang a third time.

Evelyn walked toward the entrance.

Daniel followed her.

When she opened the door, a tall man in a charcoal suit stood on the porch. He carried a black leather briefcase and wore thin silver-framed glasses.

Daniel recognized him immediately.

“Victor Hayes?””

The man looked surprised.

“Daniel. I wasn't expecting to see you here.””

Daniel glanced at the briefcase.

“What are you doing at my house?””

Victor cleared his throat.

“I came to meet Vanessa.””

Daniel turned slowly.

“Why?””

Victor looked past him into the hallway.

His eyes landed on Vanessa.

“Because she told me the documents were ready.””

Daniel felt his chest tighten.

“What documents?””

Victor hesitated.

Vanessa rushed forward.

“Victor, we need to leave. Now.””

But Daniel blocked the doorway.

“Nobody is leaving until someone explains what's happening.””

Victor adjusted his glasses.

“Perhaps this isn't the best place to discuss private financial matters.””

“Private?”” Daniel repeated.

“You're standing in my house, holding documents connected to my dead father's estate. I think you can explain yourself right here.””

Evelyn stepped beside her son.

“Come inside, Victor. You've been avoiding my questions for months. It's time we stopped pretending.””

Victor looked uncomfortable.

Then he entered.

Daniel shut the door.

They returned to the dining room.

The atmosphere had changed completely. The expensive dinner sat untouched. The chandelier continued to sparkle above them, but nobody seemed to notice its beauty anymore.

Victor placed his briefcase on the table.

Vanessa immediately reached for it.

“Don't open that.””

Daniel caught her wrist.

“Move your hand.””

She pulled away.

Victor slowly unlocked the briefcase.

Inside were several folders, printed emails, financial records, and a sealed envelope.

Daniel pointed toward the papers.

“What is all this?””

Victor looked at Vanessa.

“I thought you said your husband had already approved the transfer.””

Daniel's face hardened.

“I haven't approved anything.””

Victor closed his eyes briefly.

“Then I need to tell you the truth.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Victor, don't.””

He continued.

“Two years ago, Vanessa approached me with a request to restructure Ethan's inheritance.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Why?””

“She said Ethan's inheritance was too complicated to manage and that you wanted her to oversee it.””

“I never said that!””

Victor nodded.

“I understand that now.””

He removed a folder.

“Initially, I refused. The trust was established by your father, and changing its terms required specific legal procedures. But Vanessa insisted that you had authorized her to act on your behalf.””

Daniel looked at his wife.

“Did you forge my signature?””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“You're acting like I did something terrible. I was trying to secure the family's future.””

“By stealing from my son?””

“I used the money to improve this house!””

Victor interrupted.

“Not all of it.””

He placed a financial statement on the table.

Daniel looked down.

The figures made his stomach turn.

A large portion of Ethan's inheritance had been transferred into an account controlled by a company registered under Vanessa's name.

The remaining funds had been moved through several accounts.

Daniel looked up.

“Where is the money now?””

Victor hesitated.

“Some was spent. Some remains in an offshore investment account.””

Evelyn's fingers tightened around her cane.

“How much remains?””

Victor opened another document.

“Approximately one hundred and forty thousand dollars.””

Daniel looked stunned.

“What happened to the rest?””

Victor turned toward Vanessa.

“That's something she needs to explain.””

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

“Don't you dare put everything on me! You helped me!””

Victor nodded slowly.

“Yes. I did.””

The room went silent.

Daniel stared at him.

“So you admit it?””

“I admit that I processed transactions I should have investigated more carefully. I was told the authorization was legitimate. I later discovered irregularities, but by then the transfers had already happened.””

Evelyn stepped closer.

“And what about the documents you prepared last month?””

Victor opened the sealed envelope.

“This is why I came tonight.””

He removed a legal document and placed it in front of Daniel.

The heading read:

*AMENDMENT TO THE CARTER FAMILY TRUST.*

Daniel read the first paragraph.

His eyes narrowed.

Then he reached the second page.

His face turned completely white.

“What is this?””

Victor answered carefully.

“It would transfer control of Ethan's trust to Vanessa until Ethan turned twenty-five.””

Daniel looked at the signature section.

“And this?””

“Your approval.””

Daniel stared at the signature.

It looked like his handwriting.

But he had never signed it.

Victor continued.

“The amendment would also allow the trustee to use the funds for household expenses under certain conditions.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“You were going to take the rest of his inheritance?””

She shook her head.

“I was protecting it!””

“By putting it under your control?””

“You don't understand how much responsibility I have!””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You charged a twelve-year-old rent while using his grandfather's money to buy your children designer clothes!””

Madison suddenly stood.

“Mom…”

Vanessa turned sharply.

“Sit down!””

But Madison's face had gone pale.

“Dad,” she said quietly, “there's something else.””

Vanessa froze.

“Madison, don't.””

The girl looked at Ethan, then at Daniel.

“I didn't know where the money came from. Mom told us you had given it to us.””

Tyler nodded.

“She said Ethan's account was only temporary money Grandpa left for school.””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“Did either of you know about the rent?””

Madison looked down.

“I knew.””

“And you knew she was refusing to let him eat?””

Madison's eyes filled.

“I thought she was just being strict.””

Ethan stared at her.

“You laughed when she hit my hand.””

Madison's lips trembled.

“I know. I'm sorry.””

Ethan didn't respond.

Daniel gently squeezed his son's shoulder.

Then he turned toward Vanessa.

“I'm calling my attorney.””

Vanessa's face changed.

“Daniel, don't do this.””

“I'm done listening.””

“You'll destroy this family!””

“No. You did that when you decided my son had to pay to live in his own home.””

She approached him, lowering her voice.

“Think carefully. You can't throw away our marriage over money.””

Daniel stared at her.

“It's not about money anymore.””

“Then what is it about?””

“My son was hungry in his own house. He was afraid to tell me because you threatened to throw him out. You made him believe he was a burden.””

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“He is not my responsibility!””

Daniel pointed toward the front door.

“Then you don't need to stay here.””

She gasped.

“You're kicking me out?””

“You can take your children to a hotel tonight. My attorney will handle the rest.””

Vanessa looked toward Madison and Tyler.

“Get your things. We're leaving.””

Neither child moved.

“Now!”” she screamed.

Tyler stood reluctantly.

Madison remained seated.

Then Evelyn spoke.

“Vanessa, before you leave, there's one more thing you should know.””

Vanessa spun around.

“What now?””

Evelyn reached into her cardigan pocket and removed a small silver flash drive.

Daniel frowned.

“Mother, what's that?””

“Something I found in your father's old study.””

She placed it beside the trust documents.

“Robert gave this to me shortly before he died. He told me to keep it safe until I discovered that someone was trying to interfere with Ethan's inheritance.””

Vanessa stared at the flash drive.

For the first time, she seemed unable to breathe.

Evelyn continued.

“I didn't understand why he had been so concerned. Not until I heard you telling Ethan that he had to pay rent.””

Daniel picked up the drive.

“What did Father put on this?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“His final recorded instructions.””

Victor suddenly stepped back from the table.

“Mrs. Carter,” he whispered, “does that recording include the original trust agreement?””

Evelyn nodded.

“And something else.””

Daniel looked between them.

“What something else?””

Evelyn's expression became unusually serious.

“Your father discovered that Vanessa had been contacting him long before you ever introduced her to the family.””

Vanessa shook her head violently.

“That's impossible!””

Evelyn held her gaze.

“No, dear. What's impossible is that you thought nobody would ever discover why you chose to marry my son.””

Daniel felt the room tilt beneath him.

He looked at his wife.

“Vanessa… what is my mother talking about?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, Evelyn connected the flash drive to the small laptop Victor had brought.

A video appeared.

The screen showed Robert Carter sitting in his hospital bed.

His face was thin. His breathing was shallow.

But his eyes were clear.

He looked directly into the camera.

And the first words he spoke made Daniel's blood run cold.

“If Daniel is watching this, then Vanessa has probably succeeded in getting control of Ethan's inheritance. There's something my son needs to know about the woman he married…”

Vanessa suddenly lunged toward the laptop.

“TURN THAT OFF!””

But Evelyn calmly pressed the volume button.

May you like

Robert's voice filled the dining room.

“Daniel, she didn't enter this family by accident. And the truth about how she found you is much worse than you can imagine.””
