Chapter 8: The Secret Buried For Years
The message stayed on Lily’s phone all night.
Neither of us slept.
Not because we were afraid.
Because we were trying to understand.
After everything we had learned, another secret felt impossible.
Lily sat at the kitchen table, staring at the screen.
“What if there’s more?””
I poured her some water.
“There probably is.””
She looked at me.
“You’re not going to tell me everything is okay?””
I smiled sadly.
“No.””
She raised an eyebrow.
“No?””
“No.””
I sat across from her.
“Because sometimes pretending everything is okay makes things worse.””
She looked down.
“I like that you tell me the truth.””
Those words meant more than she knew.
The next morning, Detective Harris traced the message.
It came from a prepaid phone.
But he found something else.
A location.
An old storage facility.
When we arrived, Rachel was already there.
She looked nervous.
“You got the message.””
I looked at her.
“You know about this?””
She didn’t answer immediately.
That was enough.
“Rachel.””
She sighed.
“I hoped Lily would never need to see this.””
Lily stepped forward.
“See what?””
Rachel unlocked a small storage unit.
Inside were boxes.
Dozens of them.
Old photographs.
Documents.
Personal belongings.
Lily looked confused.
“What is this?””
Rachel touched one of the boxes.
“Your mother’s things.””
Lily froze.
“I thought everything was gone.””
“Jason said he handled everything.””
The anger returned to Lily’s face.
“Of course he did.””
Rachel opened the first box.
Inside were journals.
Letters.
A small video camera.
Lily picked up one of the journals.
“My mom wrote these?””
Rachel nodded.
“She wrote down everything.””
We spent the next hour going through the boxes.
And slowly, the missing pieces started appearing.
Her mother had known Jason was struggling financially.
She knew he was making dangerous decisions.
But the biggest discovery was a document hidden inside a journal.
Lily opened it.
Then stopped.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“It’s a custody agreement.””
I frowned.
“Custody?””
Rachel nodded.
“Your mother prepared it before she passed.””
Lily read the document.
Her hands began shaking.
“What does this mean?””
Rachel answered quietly.
“It means your mother had concerns about Jason raising you alone.””
Lily looked at the signature.
“My mom wanted someone else to have custody?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Lily looked at the final page.
Her eyes widened.
“No.””
I leaned closer.
“What?””
She turned the document toward me.
My name was written there.
I felt frozen.
“What?””
Rachel looked at me.
“She wanted you to become Lily’s legal guardian.””
Lily stared.
“My mom wanted you.””
I couldn’t speak.
For years, I had believed I was just the person who helped.
The person who stayed nearby.
But her mother had trusted me with something much bigger.
Lily looked at me.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
I shook my head.
“Because I didn’t know.””
Rachel looked shocked.
“You didn’t?””
“No.””
She searched through the documents.
Then stopped.
“That’s impossible.””
“What?””
She pulled out another paper.
“This was removed.””
Detective Harris took it.
“What was removed?””
Rachel looked at the missing section.
“The final approval page.””
Lily’s face changed.
“Someone took it.””
Everyone became silent.
Because this changed everything.
Someone hadn’t just hidden the truth.
Someone had actively erased it.
Detective Harris looked at the documents.
“We need to find out who had access.””
Rachel slowly turned toward the boxes.
Then whispered:
“There was only one person who handled these after your mother died.””
Lily looked at her.
“Who?””
Rachel hesitated.
Then said:
“Jason.””
The room went quiet.
Because suddenly, the betrayal became much bigger.
Jason hadn’t just returned to take Lily’s money.
He may have spent years making sure Lily never discovered who was supposed to protect her.
And as Detective Harris examined the missing page, his phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed.
Then he looked at Lily.
“Your father just made bail.””
Lily stood.
“What?””
The detective continued:
“And he’s not running.””
“Why?””
Detective Harris looked at the message on his phone.
“Because he wants to see you.””
I felt uneasy.
“Why now?””
The detective looked at Lily.
“Because he says he has proof that your mother never wanted you with me.””
Lily’s face went pale.
And for the first time in days, I felt something I hadn’t felt before.
Fear.
Because Jason wasn’t coming back to apologize.
May you like
He was coming back with a weapon.
The truth.
