Chapter 2: The File He Never Wanted Her To See

Lily didn’t move.

She stared at the two police officers, then at the folder in my hand.

The same folder I had hoped I would never need to show her.

The restaurant behind us was glowing with warm lights.

Couples laughed inside.

Families shared meals.

And outside, my stepdaughter sat alone on a cold bench, realizing the father she had defended so fiercely had walked away from her again.

“Why are police officers here?”” she whispered.

I walked closer.

“Because this isn’t the first time Jason has done something like this.””

Her eyes filled with confusion.

“No.””

The word came out immediately.

“No, you don’t understand. He came back because he missed me.””

I looked at her carefully.

“I wanted that to be true.””

The officer beside me, Detective Harris, spoke calmly.

“Lily, we know this is difficult.””

She looked at him.

“Did something happen?””

Detective Harris exchanged a glance with me.

Then he nodded.

“Your father didn’t arrange this dinner because he wanted to reconnect.””

Lily’s breathing changed.

“What are you talking about?””

I opened the folder.

Inside were printed records, messages, and photographs.

Evidence I had collected after noticing something strange.

Jason had not contacted Lily randomly.

He had appeared exactly when he needed something.

Two weeks earlier, I had received a letter addressed to our home.

It wasn’t for me.

It was for Lily.

At first, I thought it was another attempt from Jason to rebuild their relationship.

Then I noticed the return address.

A law office.

I contacted them.

What I discovered made my stomach turn.

Jason was involved in a legal dispute.

A financial dispute.

And Lily was connected to it.

Not because she had done anything wrong.

Because someone was trying to use her name.

“Lily,” I said gently, “your father knew about a trust account your mother created for you before she passed away.””

Her face changed.

“My mom’s account?””

I nodded.

“She left money for your future. Your education. Your security.””

Lily looked down.

“I knew about it.””

“Yes. But Jason knew too.””

She looked at me.

“What does that mean?””

I hesitated.

Because I knew the answer would hurt.

“It means he didn’t come back because he missed his daughter.””

Her lips trembled.

“No.””

“Lily…”

“No.””

She stood up.

“You’re wrong.””

I could see the battle happening inside her.

She wanted to believe him.

She needed to believe him.

Because accepting the truth meant accepting that all those years of waiting had been for nothing.

Detective Harris gently handed her a document.

“This shows your father contacted a lawyer about accessing the account.””

She looked at the paper.

Her hands shook.

“He said he wanted to take me to dinner.””

I nodded.

“He wanted you to trust him first.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

The anger she had shown earlier was gone.

The confidence.

The pride.

Everything disappeared.

“I defended him.””

Her voice cracked.

“I told you he was different.””

I stepped closer.

“Lily, listen to me.””

She looked up.

“I wasn’t hurt because you wanted him.””

I swallowed.

“I was hurt because I knew how much it would hurt you when he did this again.””

She covered her mouth.

For a moment, she looked like the little girl I first met years ago.

The little girl who had once asked me if I would still come to her school play even if her father didn’t show up.

I remembered my answer.

“I’ll always be there.””

And I meant it.

Detective Harris looked toward the restaurant entrance.

“We need to find Jason before he leaves town.””

Lily wiped her tears.

“Where is he?””

The detective was quiet.

Then he said:

“We believe he never planned to stay for dinner.””

My stomach tightened.

“What do you mean?””

He looked at Lily.

“Your father made another appointment tonight.””

“With who?”” she asked.

The detective opened his notebook.

“Someone who has been helping him transfer money.””

Lily’s face went pale.

“Transfer money from where?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Detective Harris looked at me.

I knew from his expression.

The worst part was still coming.

Because Jason hadn’t just planned to abandon Lily at that restaurant.

May you like

He had planned to use the one person who loved him most to get exactly what he wanted.

And the name on the next page of the file was the one Lily least expected to see.
