Chapter 8: The Truth Daniel Wanted Hidden
I stared at the note.
My own handwriting.
My own signature.
But a message I didn’t remember.
I looked at Vanessa.
“What is this?””
She sat down on the hallway bench.
“The reason I never told you everything.””
My voice became quieter.
“You knew I wrote this?””
“No.””
“Then why keep it?””
“Because I knew one day you would need to face it.””
I hated that she sounded right.
I hated that every answer led back to the same place.
Me.
My choices.
My silence.
My mistakes.
“What did I do?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
The honesty surprised me.
“What?””
“I said I found proof Daniel manipulated things. But this note…”
She pointed at the paper.
“This came from you.””
I looked down.
My memory felt like a locked room.
I could see pieces.
A stressful office.
Late nights.
Arguments.
Daniel shouting.
But nothing complete.
“Why don’t I remember?””
Vanessa was quiet.
Then she said:
“Because you were falling apart.””
I looked up.
“What does that mean?””
“After the company collapsed, you changed.””
I swallowed.
“I was stressed.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“You were scared.””
The word stayed between us.
Scared.
Not angry.
Not unlucky.
Scared.
“You stopped trusting everyone.””
I looked away.
“You stopped trusting yourself.””
I didn’t respond.
Because some part of me knew she was right.
That night, I went home and searched through old boxes.
Receipts.
Photos.
Documents.
Anything connected to the company.
I found an old laptop in the closet.
The one I hadn’t touched in years.
When I opened it, the battery barely worked.
But it turned on.
There were hundreds of files.
Most were meaningless.
Until I found a folder.
*Jordan.*
I clicked it.
Inside were videos.
The first one was from the day Jordan was born.
My younger self appeared on the screen.
Exhausted.
Smiling.
Holding my newborn son.
“I promise I’ll always protect you.””
I froze.
Because I remembered saying it.
I remembered meaning it.
Then another video.
Jordan’s first birthday.
Another promise.
“I’ll never miss a moment.””
I closed my eyes.
The irony was almost unbearable.
I spent years trying to become the father I promised to be.
And somehow became the exact opposite.
Then I found one final video.
The date was six years earlier.
The month everything collapsed.
I clicked play.
My younger self appeared.
But this time, I wasn’t smiling.
I looked terrified.
The camera was probably accidentally turned on.
I heard my own voice.
“If anyone finds this…”
I leaned closer.
On the screen, I looked around nervously.
“Daniel lied.””
My heart stopped.
I continued watching.
“I found the transfers. I know where the money went.””
I froze.
Money.
Transfers.
Daniel.
The pieces started connecting.
Then my younger self said something that made my blood run cold.
“I can’t tell Vanessa yet.””
I paused the video.
My hands were shaking.
Why?
Why would I hide something from Vanessa?
I pressed play again.
My old voice continued.
“Because if Daniel knows I found out, he’ll come after my family.””
The video ended.
I sat in darkness.
For years, I believed I left because I was ashamed.
But maybe there was another reason.
Maybe I had been trying to protect them.
Maybe I had forgotten the very thing I sacrificed everything for.
My phone rang.
Vanessa.
I answered immediately.
“Vanessa.””
Her voice sounded scared.
“Marcus, where are you?””
“At home.””
“You need to leave.””
My body went cold.
“Why?””
“Because I just received another message.””
“What message?””
A pause.
Then:
“Daniel knows you found the video.””
I stood up.
“How?””
Vanessa’s voice trembled.
“Because he sent me a photo.””
“What photo?””
She whispered:
“Your house.””
I looked toward the window.
The street outside was dark.
Empty.
Then I saw something that made my blood run cold.
A car parked across the road.
The headlights turned on.
May you like
And someone inside slowly lifted a phone toward my house.
Taking a picture.
