Chapter 6: The File Hidden Behind My Son’s Name

The next morning, I drove to the address Daniel had texted me.

I didn’t tell Vanessa.

I didn’t tell Jordan.

Because I didn’t know what I was walking into.

The building was old.

A small office above a closed-down bookstore.

When I entered, Daniel was already waiting.

He looked exactly the same.

Perfect suit.

Expensive watch.

That confident smile that always made people believe him.

“Marcus Reed.””

I stopped several feet away.

“You look comfortable.””

He smiled.

“I rebuilt.””

“You destroyed everything we built.””

Daniel leaned back.

“That’s what you tell yourself.””

I stared at him.

“Why am I here?””

He slid a folder across the desk.

“Open it.””

I didn’t move.

“What is it?””

“Your past.””

I picked up the folder.

Inside were financial documents.

Old company records.

Emails.

Then I saw a signature.

Mine.

My hands went cold.

“What is this?””

Daniel watched me carefully.

“Proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“That you weren’t the victim you told yourself you were.””

I slammed the folder shut.

“You’re lying.””

“Am I?””

He pushed another document forward.

“This was filed six years ago.””

I looked at the date.

Six years.

The same year Jordan was born.

My eyes moved down the page.

And then I saw the name.

Vanessa.

My heart dropped.

“Why is my ex-wife’s name on this?””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Because she knew.””

“Knew what?””

“That the company collapse wasn’t just about me.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Daniel watched my face.

“You never told her, did you?””

“Tell her what?””

He smiled.

“That you signed the agreement.””

The room felt smaller.

“What agreement?””

Daniel pointed at the document.

“The one transferring liability to you.””

I stared.

“I never signed that.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

Not anger.

Almost disappointment.

“You really don’t remember.””

I looked through the papers faster.

There were dates.

Meetings.

Contracts.

And then something impossible.

A copy of my signature.

My signature.

But I didn’t remember signing it.

“Where did you get this?””

Daniel stood.

“From the same place Vanessa got the information.””

My chest tightened.

“She knew?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Months ago.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Daniel walked around the desk.

“She didn’t change Jordan’s name because she hated you.””

I looked at him.

“Then why?””

His voice lowered.

“Because she found out you weren’t just absent.””

A pause.

“You were hiding.””

I felt anger and fear collide.

“I wasn’t hiding anything.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Then why did you stop answering everyone the same week the investigation started?””

I couldn’t respond.

Because I remembered.

The phone calls.

The messages.

The fear.

Back then, I thought people were blaming me unfairly.

But what if there was something I forgot?

Something I refused to see?

I left the office carrying the folder.

My mind was spinning.

When I arrived at Vanessa’s house, she was standing outside.

She already knew.

“You saw him.””

It wasn’t a question.

I held up the folder.

“You knew about this?””

Her eyes filled with disappointment.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt more than I expected.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

She looked at me.

“Because I was waiting for you to tell me.””

My voice cracked.

“Tell you what?””

“The truth.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t know what the truth is anymore.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“That’s the problem, Marcus.””

She pointed at the folder.

“You spent years running from your past.””

Then she looked toward the house.

“Now your son is old enough to ask why his father ran away.””

I lowered my eyes.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Jordan’s school.

I opened it.

My blood ran cold.

*Emergency meeting requested. Parent must attend.*

Underneath was a note from his teacher.

*Jordan wrote something concerning in class today. We think you both need to see it.*

I looked at Vanessa.

“What did he write?””

She didn’t answer.

May you like

Because she already knew.

And the fear in her eyes told me this had nothing to do with a last name anymore.
