Chapter 8: The Truth About My Son

I didn’t move after the call ended.

I couldn’t.

The room felt like it had shifted beneath my feet.

For years, I believed I knew exactly who I was.

A husband.

A father.

A man trying to build a good life.

But one sentence had broken that certainty.

“The truth about Ethan’s father.””

I looked at Claire.

“Explain.””

She didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

“Claire.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

She looked down.

“Soon.””

I nodded slowly.

“Everyone always says that when they’re hiding something.””

Ray stepped forward.

“James, listen.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

My voice was calm.

“I need her to answer.””

Claire sat down.

Her hands were shaking.

“Ethan is your son.””

I stared at her.

The words should have relieved me.

They didn’t.

Because she said them like she was trying to convince me.

“Then why would your mother say that?””

Claire wiped her face.

“Because she wanted to hurt you.””

“That’s not enough.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

I waited.

Finally, she spoke.

“When Ethan was born, there was a mistake at the hospital.””

The room went silent.

I felt my heartbeat in my ears.

“What kind of mistake?””

Claire looked at Ray.

He lowered his eyes.

“A paperwork mistake.””

I stared at both of them.

“Stop.””

My voice cracked.

“Just tell me.””

Claire took a deep breath.

“After Ethan was born, the hospital records were mixed up temporarily.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means another baby had the wrong file attached for a short time.””

I felt confused.

“And?””

“And during that time, there was confusion about the paternity paperwork.””

I looked at her.

“You thought Ethan wasn’t mine?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

She started crying.

“My mother found out about the mistake.””

“And she used it.””

Claire nodded.

“She told me she could ruin everything if you ever left.””

I stared at her.

“So she threatened you?””

“Yes.””

“With what?””

“With telling you Ethan might not be yours.””

The words hurt.

Even knowing the truth now.

Because the possibility had existed in someone else’s mind.

Someone had used my son as a weapon.

Ray finally spoke.

“I found out what Linda was doing.””

“How?””

“She contacted me.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because she wanted me to help convince Claire that you weren’t good enough.””

I laughed bitterly.

“So she tried to recruit you?””

“Yes.””

“And instead?””

“I refused.””

The room went quiet.

I looked at Ray differently.

Not as a stranger.

Not as someone who invaded my family.

But as someone who had been pulled into a nightmare he didn’t create.

“Why didn’t you tell me sooner?””

Ray looked down.

“Because Claire asked me not to.””

I looked at my wife.

“Why?””

Claire’s voice broke.

“Because I was ashamed.””

“Of what?””

“That I let my mother control me.””

I sat down.

The anger was still there.

But underneath it was something else.

Pain.

I thought about every night I came home tired.

Every time Ethan ran to hug me.

Every time I wondered if I was doing enough.

And all this time, someone had been planting doubt inside my own house.

Then Ethan walked into the room.

“Dad?””

I looked up.

“Yeah?””

He held his red bicycle helmet.

“Can I ask something?””

“Of course.””

He looked at Claire.

“Are you and Mommy fighting because of me?””

My heart broke.

“No, buddy.””

“But Grandma said…”

He stopped.

I knelt down.

“What did Grandma say?””

He swallowed.

“She said one day I might have to choose.””

My face changed.

“Choose what?””

He whispered:

“Choose which daddy I wanted.””

The room went silent.

Claire covered her mouth.

Ray looked furious for the first time.

I held Ethan’s shoulders gently.

“Buddy, you never have to choose.””

He looked at me.

“Promise?””

I hugged him.

“I promise.””

Later that night, after Ethan fell asleep, I stood alone in the kitchen.

The Christmas tree lights reflected against the window.

A year ago, I thought my biggest fear was losing my marriage.

I was wrong.

My biggest fear was someone convincing my son he had to lose me.

Then my phone received one final message.

This time from Linda.

Only five words.

*“Ask Claire about the second test.””*

I stared at the screen.

Second test?

I slowly turned toward the hallway.

Because I realized something.

Claire had told me part of the truth.

Not all of it.

May you like

And whatever the second test revealed…

It was the reason everyone had been so afraid.
