Chapter 4: The Man Who Knew My Family

I spent the next hour trying to make sense of a truth that kept changing shape.

Every answer created another question.

Every explanation created another lie.

Claire sat at the kitchen table, holding a cup of coffee she never drank.

I stood by the window, watching snow fall onto the backyard where Ethan had learned to walk.

A place filled with memories.

Memories I suddenly didn’t know if they were mine alone.

“Tell me everything,” I said.

Claire looked up.

“I’m scared.””

“So am I.””

She looked down.

“I met Ray six months ago.””

I closed my eyes.

Six months.

Exactly when my company started sending me out of town more often.

“Where?””

“At a community event.””

“Which event?””

“The school fundraiser.””

I turned around.

“The one I couldn’t attend because of work?””

She nodded.

The answer hurt because it reminded me of every missed moment.

But something still didn’t make sense.

“You brought him here?””

“No.””

I stared at her.

“You just admitted he was in our house.””

She swallowed.

“He came over after Ethan already knew him.””

I felt my anger rise.

“How did my son know him?””

Claire hesitated.

Then she said:

“Because Ray helped me.””

“With what?””

She looked toward the stairs.

“With Ethan.””

That sentence cut deeper than anything else.

Not because I believed I had been replaced.

Because I feared I had been absent.

A father can survive many things.

But wondering whether his child needed someone else because he wasn’t there enough?

That destroys you.

“I worked for this family,” I said quietly.

“I know.””

“I missed birthdays because I was building a future.””

“I know.””

“I thought I was protecting you.””

Claire started crying.

“I never wanted this to happen.””

“Then why did it?””

She didn’t answer.

A knock suddenly came from the front door.

Both of us froze.

Claire’s face changed.

“You invited him?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

The knock came again.

Three slow knocks.

Ethan appeared at the hallway entrance.

“Is that Uncle Ray?””

Claire immediately walked toward him.

“No, sweetheart. Go upstairs.””

But Ethan didn’t move.

He looked confused.

“Why is Uncle Ray here?””

My blood ran cold.

I looked at Claire.

“You said he wasn’t coming.””

“He isn’t.””

Another knock.

This time, louder.

I walked toward the door.

Claire grabbed my arm.

“James, wait.””

I looked at her hand.

Then at her face.

“What are you afraid will happen?””

Her lips trembled.

“Because if you open that door…”

She stopped.

“Because what?””

She let go.

“Everything changes.””

I opened the door.

A man stood on the porch.

Early forties.

Calm expression.

Dark jacket.

The kind of face that looked familiar even though I had never seen it before.

He looked past me.

His eyes landed on Ethan.

And he smiled.

“Hey, buddy.””

Ethan immediately smiled back.

“Uncle Ray!””

I felt the world shift.

The man looked at me.

“I guess we finally meet.””

I stared at him.

“Who are you?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at Claire.

Then back at me.

“I think your wife should tell you.””

My jaw tightened.

“Tell me what?””

Ray took a deep breath.

Then he said the words that changed everything.

“I’m not the person you should be worried about.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

He looked directly at Claire.

“It means she never told you why I came into this family.””

Claire went completely pale.

“Ray, don’t.””

But he continued.

“Because I wasn’t here for her.””

Silence.

I looked at Ethan.

Then back at him.

“Then why were you here?””

Ray’s expression changed.

And his next words made my entire body go cold.

“I came because I knew something about your son that you didn’t.””

He reached into his pocket.

Pulled out a small envelope.

And handed it to me.

“Your wife has been hiding this since the night you were away.””

I looked at the envelope.

My name was written on the front.

But the handwriting wasn’t Claire’s.

It wasn’t Ray’s.

It was my son’s.

May you like

And underneath my name were four words:

*“Dad, I’m sorry.””*
