Chapter 7: The Secret Willowcrest Buried

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The photograph on Ethan’s phone sat there like a warning.

A picture of us.

Inside the abandoned theater.

Taken from outside.

Someone had been watching.

Someone knew we were here.

And someone wanted us to stop.

Ethan stared at the screen.

His face had gone completely still.

That scared me more than anger would have.

Because I knew that look.

It was the same look he had when he was sixteen and trying not to break.

“Ethan,” I said softly.

He didn’t answer.

Daniel took the phone from his hand.

“Let me see.””

Ethan didn’t resist.

Daniel looked at the message.

Then at Lucas.

“Who else knows about this?””

Lucas shook his head.

“No one.””

“That’s impossible,” Daniel said.

Lucas looked frustrated.

“I swear.””

“Someone knew we would come here.””

“I know.””

“Someone knew about the video.””

Lucas ran a hand through his hair.

“I know.””

The panic in his voice was different from fear.

It was realization.

Like he had finally understood how serious this was.

Mia stepped closer.

“Lucas.””

He looked at her.

“Who could it be?””

Lucas didn’t answer immediately.

Then he whispered:

“Someone from Willowcrest.””

My stomach tightened.

“The school?””

Lucas nodded.

“Lily found something.””

Ethan looked at him.

“Something about the school.””

“Yes.””

“What?””

Lucas looked at the laptop.

At Lily’s frozen face on the screen.

Then he looked back at Ethan.

“She found out the school knew more about her condition than they admitted.””

The words didn’t make sense at first.

“What does that mean?”” I asked.

Lucas swallowed.

“Lily collapsed during school three months before she died.””

Ethan frowned.

“She told me she fainted because she skipped lunch.””

Lucas looked at him sadly.

“She lied.””

Ethan froze.

“What?””

“She didn’t want you to worry.””

The room went quiet.

Lucas continued.

“She had been feeling sick for weeks. She told a teacher. She went to the nurse’s office.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“And?””

Lucas looked at him.

“And the school contacted her parents.””

I felt confused.

“Then what’s the problem?””

Lucas hesitated.

“The problem is what happened after.””

Ethan’s voice became sharper.

“What happened?””

Lucas looked at him.

“They told her to stop making a scene.””

The words hit the room.

“What?””

Lucas nodded.

“The nurse thought she was exaggerating. They thought she wanted attention because she was stressed.””

Ethan shook his head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“Lily would never…”

“I know.””

Lucas’s eyes filled.

“That’s exactly why it was wrong.””

Mia covered her mouth.

“What are you saying?””

Lucas looked toward the stage.

“I’m saying Lily tried to tell people something was wrong.””

A pause.

“And they didn’t listen.””

My chest tightened.

I looked at the video.

At Lily’s smiling face.

The girl who had told Ethan not to disappear.

The girl who had been fighting while everyone assumed she was fine.

“What happened after she went to the hospital?”” Ethan asked.

Lucas looked at him.

“She was diagnosed.””

“I know that.””

“No.””

Lucas shook his head.

“You know the diagnosis.””

He stepped closer.

“You don’t know what happened before.””

Ethan went silent.

Lucas continued.

“Lily found paperwork.””

“What paperwork?””

“School records.””

Daniel frowned.

“Records of what?””

“Her visits to the nurse.””

The answer came slowly.

“Someone changed them.””

A cold silence followed.

I looked at Ethan.

He looked lost.

“Changed them how?””

Lucas took a breath.

“They removed notes.””

“What notes?””

“Notes saying Lily repeatedly asked for help.””

The room felt smaller.

Ethan stared at him.

“Why would someone do that?””

Lucas’s expression hardened.

“Because admitting they ignored her would mean admitting they failed her.””

Nobody spoke.

Because suddenly the story was bigger.

Not just a girl.

Not just a dress.

Not just a promise.

A system.

A group of people who had decided protecting themselves mattered more than admitting a mistake.

Ethan looked at the laptop.

“Lily knew?””

Lucas nodded.

“She was trying to find proof.””

“Why?””

“Because she didn’t want another student to be ignored.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Even at the end.

Even when she was scared.

She was thinking about someone else.

“That’s why she recorded the video,” Ethan whispered.

Lucas nodded.

“She wanted you to finish what she started.””

Ethan looked overwhelmed.

“I don’t know how.””

“You do.””

“No, I don’t.””

Lucas stepped closer.

“Yes, you do.””

Ethan shook his head.

“I’m not her.””

“No.””

Lucas’s voice softened.

“You’re not.””

A pause.

“But she chose you because she knew you didn’t have to be.””

The words stayed with him.

For a moment, nobody said anything.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

Everyone jumped.

The name on the screen made him go pale.

*Principal Harris.*

My heart sank.

Daniel answered.

“Hello?””

At first, nobody heard anything.

Then Daniel’s expression changed.

“What?””

He turned away.

“No, I’m with them.””

A pause.

Then:

“Where?””

He listened.

His face became serious.

“Okay.””

He hung up.

“What happened?”” I asked.

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“Principal Harris knows we’re here.””

Ethan frowned.

“How?””

Daniel looked toward the door.

“He said someone called him.””

Lucas immediately stood.

“Who?””

Daniel shook his head.

“He didn’t say.””

Mia looked nervous.

“What did he want?””

Daniel’s expression darkened.

“He wants us to come back to the school.””

“No,” I said immediately.

Everyone looked at me.

“We are not walking into a school building in the middle of the night because someone demands it.””

Ethan looked thoughtful.

“He knows something.””

I shook my head.

“He might.””

“But if he’s connected…”

“Exactly.””

My son looked at me.

“Mom.””

I knew that look.

The same one from two weeks ago.

The look of someone who had already made a decision.

“You’re going.””

He didn’t answer.

He didn’t have to.

I closed my eyes.

“Ethan.””

“I need answers.””

“You need safety.””

“I’ve spent three years wondering why Lily died.””

His voice broke.

“I can’t stop now.””

I looked at him.

My son.

The boy who wore a red dress because someone he loved asked him to be brave.

I hated that the world kept asking him to be stronger.

But I also knew something.

I couldn’t protect him by keeping him trapped.

So I nodded.

“Then we all go.””

Ethan looked surprised.

“Mom—”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You are done carrying this alone.””

Daniel stepped beside us.

“I agree.””

Lucas nodded.

“So do I.””

Mia smiled sadly.

“Obviously.””

For the first time that night, Ethan looked less alone.

Not healed.

Not okay.

But less alone.

We drove back to Willowcrest High.

The building looked different at night.

During the day, it was full of students.

Noise.

Movement.

Life.

Now it was dark.

Silent.

Almost empty.

Principal Harris was waiting near the front entrance.

But he wasn’t alone.

There was another person standing beside him.

A woman.

Older.

Professional.

Someone I didn’t recognize.

Ethan stopped walking.

Because he did.

His face changed.

“Who is that?””

Principal Harris looked nervous.

The woman stepped forward.

“I’m Dr. Rebecca Lane.””

Lucas went pale.

Ethan noticed.

“You know her?””

Lucas didn’t answer.

“Lucas?””

Finally, he whispered:

“She was Lily’s doctor.””

My heart dropped.

Dr. Lane looked at Ethan.

“I’ve been trying to find you for three years.””

Ethan stared.

“Why?””

She looked at the red dress.

Then at the memory card in his hand.

And her expression changed.

“You found it.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“Found what?””

Dr. Lane took a shaky breath.

“The evidence Lily hid.””

Everyone froze.

“Evidence of what?”” Daniel asked.

The doctor looked around the empty hallway.

Then quietly said:

“The reason Lily didn’t want anyone to know how she really died.””

The lights above us flickered.

May you like

And Dr. Lane whispered:

“Because someone at Willowcrest made sure her final warning would disappear.””
