Chapter 5: The Message Lily Left Behind
The parking lot suddenly felt colder.
Not because of the wind.
Not because of the late hour.
Because of the message glowing on Daniel’s phone.
*You weren’t supposed to show him that.*
I stared at the screen.
Then at Daniel.
Then at Ethan.
No one spoke.
The silence felt heavier than anything that had happened inside the auditorium.
“Who sent that?”” I asked.
Daniel didn’t answer.
His eyes stayed fixed on the phone.
“I don’t know.””
Ethan stepped closer.
“Let me see.””
Daniel hesitated.
For a second, I thought he might hide it.
But then he handed the phone over.
Ethan read the message.
His face changed.
Not fear.
Recognition.
“Who is this?””
Nobody answered.
“Dad?””
Daniel looked away.
“I don’t know.””
Ethan looked at him.
“You do.””
The words came quietly.
But they hit hard.
Daniel’s expression shifted.
“I have an idea.””
“What idea?””
Daniel took a breath.
“It might be someone from the school.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“Someone from the school?””
Daniel nodded.
“The file was sent to me two days ago.””
Ethan froze.
“Two days?””
“Yes.””
“And you didn’t tell me?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“I didn’t know what it was.””
Ethan stared at him.
“You opened it.””
“No.””
“Then how did you know Lily recorded something?””
Daniel looked down.
“Because the message said her name.””
My heart tightened.
“What message?””
Daniel unlocked his phone and opened the conversation.
There was only one message before the one we saw.
No number saved.
No profile picture.
Just an unknown sender.
The message read:
*Your son is about to make a choice. Before you judge him, watch what Lily left behind.*
Attached was a video file.
Ethan looked at the screen.
“Why would someone send that to you?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t know.
And that scared me.
This wasn’t just about a dress anymore.
Someone had been watching.
Someone had known.
Someone had waited until graduation night.
Mia stepped closer.
“Wait.””
We all looked at her.
She looked pale.
“What?””
She pointed at the phone.
“Can I see the number?””
Daniel handed it to her.
Her face changed immediately.
“You know it?””
Ethan asked.
Mia nodded slowly.
“I think so.””
“Who?””
She swallowed.
“Someone who was there when Lily recorded the video.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Who?””
Mia looked at Ethan.
“Her older brother.””
Ethan frowned.
“Lucas?””
Mia nodded.
I remembered hearing Lily’s name for the first time tonight.
Now there were more names.
More pieces.
More secrets.
“Why would Lily’s brother send this?”” I asked.
Mia looked uncertain.
“Because he and Ethan haven’t spoken since Lily died.””
Ethan looked away.
“I tried.””
Mia nodded.
“I know.””
“Why didn’t he answer?””
She didn’t respond.
That was when I realized something.
Everyone had been protecting Ethan from pain.
But in doing so, they had also kept him trapped inside it.
“Who is Lucas?”” I asked.
Ethan answered quietly.
“He was Lily’s brother.””
“Older?””
“By six years.””
“Did you know him?””
Ethan nodded.
“He was always around.””
“What happened between you?””
Ethan looked at the ground.
“After Lily died, he blamed me.””
The words made my heart stop.
“Blamed you?””
Ethan nodded.
“He said if I had noticed sooner, maybe she would have told someone earlier.””
I covered my mouth.
“Oh, Ethan…”
“He didn’t mean it.””
“You don’t know that.””
Ethan looked at me.
“I do.””
The certainty in his voice broke me.
Because my son was still protecting someone who hurt him.
Even after everything.
That was who he was.
Daniel looked at the phone.
“We need to find Lucas.””
Ethan shook his head.
“No.””
Daniel looked surprised.
“No?””
“He doesn’t want to see me.””
“That doesn’t mean we ignore this.””
Ethan looked back at the message.
“He said I wasn’t supposed to see it.””
I felt a chill.
“Maybe because there’s something in the video.””
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone knew that was possible.
Daniel tried opening the file again.
Nothing.
The same error appeared.
Corrupted.
Deleted.
Broken.
“What if it’s gone?”” Ethan whispered.
The pain in his voice was immediate.
Not because of a file.
Because he thought he had lost Lily again.
I stepped closer.
“Ethan.””
He looked at me.
“You heard her voice.””
His eyes filled.
“But not the whole message.””
“No.””
“But you will.””
He looked unsure.
“How do you know?””
“Because Lily gave you a promise to keep.””
I touched the red fabric.
“And she wouldn’t make one without a way for you to finish it.””
For the first time all night, Ethan looked like he believed me.
Then Daniel’s phone buzzed again.
Everyone froze.
Another message.
Same unknown number.
Daniel opened it.
This time there was a photo.
A picture of Ethan walking onto the graduation stage.
The red dress.
The crowd.
The moment everyone laughed.
My stomach turned.
Someone had been there.
Someone had recorded it.
The message underneath said:
*She would be proud. But he needs to know the truth.*
Ethan stared.
“Truth about what?””
No answer.
Then another message appeared.
*Come to the old theater behind Willowcrest. Alone.*
My heart dropped.
“No.””
Ethan looked at me.
“Mom—”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You are not going somewhere because a stranger tells you to.””
Daniel nodded.
“She’s right.””
Ethan looked frustrated.
“But what if it’s Lily’s brother?””
“Then he can talk to all of us.””
Ethan looked at the message again.
The location.
The old theater.
I knew that place.
Everyone did.
It had been abandoned for years.
The school used to use it for performances before they built the new auditorium.
But after a fire damaged part of the building, it was closed.
Nobody went there.
Especially not at night.
“Absolutely not,” I said.
Ethan looked at me.
“Mom.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“I spent tonight watching people hurt you because they didn’t understand. I am not going to watch someone pull you into another situation where you could get hurt.””
He looked down.
“I have to know.””
“I know.””
“No, Mom.””
His voice became stronger.
“I need to know.””
That stopped me.
Because there was a difference.
Wanting answers.
Needing them.
Ethan had spent three years carrying questions.
Questions about Lily.
Questions about her last days.
Questions about why she gave him that dress.
Questions about why everyone disappeared afterward.
Daniel stepped beside him.
“I’ll go with you.””
Ethan looked at him.
“I said alone.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Then whoever sent that message made a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
“They forgot you’re not alone anymore.””
Ethan looked at his father.
Something passed between them.
Not forgiveness.
Not yet.
But something close.
A beginning.
Mia grabbed her jacket.
“I’m coming too.””
Ethan immediately shook his head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“Mia—”
“I already made the mistake of leaving once.””
She looked at him.
“I’m not doing it again.””
Nobody argued.
Because she meant it.
Twenty minutes later, we drove toward the old theater.
The road was dark.
The city lights disappeared behind us.
Ethan sat in the passenger seat.
Quiet.
Holding the photograph of Lily.
Daniel drove.
And I sat in the back, watching my son’s reflection in the window.
He looked older tonight.
Not because of the dress.
Because of everything that came with it.
When we reached the theater, the building looked exactly like I remembered.
Broken windows.
Old brick walls.
A faded sign hanging above the entrance.
The place looked abandoned.
But the light was on inside.
Someone was waiting.
Ethan opened the car door.
I grabbed his arm.
“Be careful.””
He looked at me.
“I will.””
Then he looked at Daniel.
His father nodded.
Together, we walked toward the entrance.
The door was already open.
That frightened me more than if it had been locked.
Inside, the theater smelled like dust and old wood.
The stage was covered in darkness.
Then a voice came from the seats.
“You came.””
Ethan stopped.
A figure stood slowly.
A man.
Tall.
Older.
His face looked exhausted.
And when he stepped into the light, Ethan froze.
Because he recognized him.
“Lucas.””
Lily’s brother looked at the red dress.
Then at Ethan.
His eyes filled with tears.
“I never thought you would actually wear it.””
Ethan’s voice was quiet.
“You sent the message.””
Lucas nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Lucas looked toward the empty stage.
Then he whispered:
“Because Lily didn’t leave that video for you.””
He looked back at Ethan.
“She left it for the person who needed to hear it most.””
Ethan frowned.
“Who?””
Lucas reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small memory card.
May you like
Then he said the words that made my heart stop.
“She wanted you to know what really happened the night she died.””
