Chapter 9: The Man Who Knew Derek’s Secret

The stranger stood in the doorway, and for the first time since I met Derek, I saw him look completely powerless.

No confident smile.

No calm explanation.

No carefully chosen words.

Just fear.

My mother slowly stood up.

“Who are you?””

The man stepped inside and closed the door behind him.

“My name is Richard Cole.””

Derek immediately shook his head.

“No.””

Richard looked at him.

“Yes.””

The way he said it made the entire room feel heavier.

Like they had been waiting twenty-two years for this exact moment.

My mother looked between them.

“Derek, who is he?””

Derek didn’t answer.

That was becoming his pattern.

Silence when the truth got too close.

Richard looked at my mother.

“I worked with your father.””

Her expression changed.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

He glanced at the folder in my hand.

“And I believe Jason already found the beginning of the story.””

I looked at him.

“Then tell us the rest.””

Richard nodded.

“I will.””

Derek stepped forward.

“This is unnecessary.””

Richard turned toward him.

“You’ve said that every time someone gets close to discovering the truth.””

My mother looked at Derek.

“What truth?””

Richard took a deep breath.

“Twenty-two years ago, your father discovered Derek had been using company funds without permission.””

My mother froze.

Derek immediately responded.

“That’s not true.””

Richard didn’t even look surprised.

“You said that back then too.””

I looked at Derek.

“You stole from my grandfather?””

“No.””

His answer came too quickly.

Richard continued.

“He didn’t take money directly. He created fake investments and moved funds through different accounts.””

My mother covered her mouth.

“No…”

Derek looked at her.

“Emily, listen to me.””

She stepped back.

“No.””

The same word she had used earlier.

But this time, it wasn’t for me.

It was for him.

“I need to hear this.””

Derek’s face changed.

“Emily.””

“Let him talk.””

Richard nodded.

“Your father discovered everything and confronted Derek.””

I looked at the old photograph.

The one showing my grandfather, my mother, and Derek.

“He knew him before?””

Richard nodded.

“Yes.””

“How?””

“Derek was charming.””

Richard’s voice became quieter.

“He knew exactly what people wanted to hear.””

My stomach tightened.

Because I remembered.

That was exactly how he spoke.

Calm.

Reasonable.

Always making himself sound like the victim.

Richard continued.

“Your grandfather wanted to report him.””

My mother whispered:

“But he didn’t.””

“No.””

Richard looked at her.

“Because Derek convinced him not to.””

“How?””

Richard looked at Derek.

“By convincing everyone that your grandfather was unstable.””

The room went silent.

I felt sick.

Because I understood the pattern.

Create doubt.

Control the story.

Make everyone question the truth.

“What happened after that?”” I asked.

Richard looked at me.

“Your grandfather changed his will.””

My eyes widened.

“What?””

Derek’s face went pale.

Richard continued.

“He removed Derek from everything.””

My mother looked confused.

“But Derek told me my father cut him off because he hated him.””

Richard shook his head.

“That was the story Derek created.””

My mother closed her eyes.

A tear fell down her cheek.

I wanted to say something.

Anything.

But there were no words.

She had spent decades believing a lie.

Richard reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small envelope.

“I kept this because I knew someday someone would need it.””

He handed it to my mother.

She looked afraid to open it.

“What is this?””

“Your father’s final statement.””

Her hands shook as she opened it.

She read silently.

Then her face collapsed.

“What does it say?”” I asked softly.

She looked at me.

“He knew.””

“What?””

“He knew Derek would try to come back.””

Derek stepped forward.

“Emily, don’t listen to them.””

My mother looked up.

“Why?””

The question was quiet.

But powerful.

“Why did you come back?””

Derek opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

My mother stared at him.

“You didn’t come back because you loved me.””

His silence answered.

“You came back because of what my father left.””

Derek finally spoke.

“I did love you.””

She shook her head.

“Maybe you did.””

Her voice broke.

“But you loved what I could give you more.””

That sentence destroyed whatever control Derek had left.

He looked angry.

Not at himself.

At everyone else.

“You have no idea what I sacrificed.””

I stared at him.

“You sacrificed us.””

He looked at me.

“You think you’re innocent?””

The accusation surprised me.

“What?””

“You think your grandfather was some hero?””

Richard interrupted.

“Don’t do this.””

But Derek continued.

“No. Let him hear it.””

He pointed toward the letter.

“Your grandfather made mistakes too.””

I stayed silent.

Because maybe he was right.

Everyone had flaws.

Everyone made mistakes.

But mistakes were not the same as manipulation.

Derek looked at my mother.

“I was trying to build something.””

My mother whispered:

“You destroyed something.””

The room went quiet.

Then Derek’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

Fear returned.

He answered.

“Hello?””

A few seconds passed.

Then his face went completely pale.

“What do you mean?””

He listened.

Then slowly lowered the phone.

I watched him.

“What happened?””

Derek looked at all of us.

And for the first time…

He looked like someone who had lost everything.

“The accounts were frozen.””

Richard nodded.

“Finally.””

My mother looked confused.

“What accounts?””

Richard looked at her.

“The ones Derek thought nobody would find.””

Derek stared at me.

And I realized something.

May you like

The entire time, he wasn’t trying to remove me because I was a problem.

He was trying to remove me because I was the last person standing between him and the truth.
