Chapter 3: The Stranger Who Knew Too Much

I stood outside my mother’s house with the phone pressed against my ear, unable to move.

The front door was still open behind me.

I could see the living room through the doorway.

The couch.

The boxes.

Derek standing beside my mother like he had always belonged there.

Like I was the outsider.

But the stranger’s voice pulled my attention away from everything.

“Jason? Are you still there?””

My throat felt dry.

“Yes.””

I looked down the street.

The same street where I had learned to ride a bike.

The same street where my mother used to wait for me when I came home late from school.

“Who are you?”” I asked.

The man hesitated.

“My name is Thomas Reed.””

That name meant nothing to me.

“Why are you calling me?””

Another pause.

Then his voice lowered.

“Because I believe your mother is making a mistake. And I think you deserve to know what happened before you walk away from your family.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“What are you talking about?””

“I can’t explain everything over the phone.””

I almost laughed.

“Someone just called me out of nowhere saying my mother is making a mistake. You expect me to trust that?””

“No,” Thomas replied calmly.

“I expect you to be careful.””

The seriousness in his voice made me stop.

“Careful of what?””

Before he answered, I heard my mother calling from the doorway.

“Jason?””

I turned.

She was standing there.

For a second, I saw worry on her face.

Real worry.

But then Derek appeared behind her.

His expression immediately changed when he saw the phone.

“Who’s that?””

I looked at him.

Something about the question bothered me.

Not curiosity.

Fear.

He wasn’t wondering.

He was checking.

I turned away.

“Thomas?””

The line was silent.

Then Thomas whispered:

“He’s there, isn’t he?””

My heart skipped.

“How do you know?””

“Because Derek always shows up when someone starts asking questions.””

I stared at the house.

“What questions?””

Thomas sighed.

“Jason, your mother didn’t suddenly decide to remove you because she stopped loving you.””

I swallowed.

“Then why?””

“Because someone convinced her that you were the problem.””

My eyes moved back toward Derek.

He was watching me.

“What does that mean?””

Thomas lowered his voice.

“I need to meet you.””

“When?””

“Tonight.””

I looked at the house.

At my mother.

At the boxes waiting by the door.

“I don’t know if I can trust you.””

“You shouldn’t trust me yet.””

His answer surprised me.

“But you should hear what I have to say.””

The call ended.

I stood there for another minute.

My mother walked toward me slowly.

“Jason, who was that?””

I slipped the phone into my pocket.

“Someone who thinks I should know the truth.””

Her expression changed.

“What truth?””

Before I could answer, Derek stepped outside.

“That’s enough.””

I looked at him.

“Enough of what?””

“Enough of people putting ideas in your head.””

I stared at him.

“You know him?””

For the first time, Derek didn’t answer immediately.

That tiny hesitation told me more than words could.

My mother noticed it too.

“Derek?””

He recovered quickly.

“No. I don’t know who that was.””

But his voice was different.

Less confident.

I looked at my mother.

“Did you know him?””

She shook her head.

“Jason, please don’t start accusing people.””

“I’m not accusing anyone.””

I pointed at the house.

“I’m trying to understand why the person I trusted most is throwing me out.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

But again, she stayed silent.

That silence hurt more than anger.

I picked up my backpack.

“I’ll get my things.””

“Where will you go?”” she asked.

I stopped.

Because I didn’t have an answer.

I had some money saved.

I had a job.

But I never imagined needing a plan to survive without my mother.

“I’ll figure it out.””

She looked away.

“Jason…”

I waited.

Maybe this was the moment.

Maybe she would finally choose me.

Maybe she would say, “Don’t go.””

But instead she said:

“Please don’t make this harder for me.””

For me.

Not for us.

For me.

I nodded slowly.

“Okay.””

I walked inside.

Every step felt heavier.

I packed what I could carry.

A few shirts.

My laptop.

The old watch my father gave me.

The photo of my mother and me from when I was younger.

I almost left it behind.

Almost.

But I couldn’t.

Some part of me still wanted proof that the love I remembered was real.

When I came downstairs, Derek was waiting.

“You’re actually leaving.””

I looked at him.

“You wanted this.””

He shrugged.

“I wanted your mother to have peace.””

I laughed quietly.

“Funny.””

“What?””

“You keep saying you’re protecting her, but you’re the one who pushed me out.””

His jaw tightened.

“You don’t understand adult relationships.””

“No.””

I looked him directly in the eyes.

“I understand enough.””

My mother appeared behind him.

“Jason.””

I turned.

She looked at the bag in my hand.

Her face finally showed pain.

But it was too late.

“I love you,” she whispered.

Those words almost destroyed me.

Because I wanted to believe them.

I wanted to run back and hug her.

But love wasn’t just something someone said.

It was something they chose.

And she had chosen.

I opened the door.

Then I heard Derek say something behind me.

Something quiet.

Something he probably didn’t want me to hear.

“Once he’s gone, everything will be easier.””

I stopped.

Slowly, I turned around.

My mother looked confused.

“Easier?””

Derek immediately smiled.

“I mean easier for everyone to adjust.””

But I remembered his words.

Everything will be easier.

I walked outside.

And for the first time in my life, I wondered if I had ever truly known the man who was replacing me.

Because Thomas was right about one thing.

May you like

There was something Derek wasn’t telling us.

And I was determined to find out what.
