Chapter 7 - The Account in My Name

Two hundred and eighty thousand dollars.

Money I didn't have.

Money transferred under my name.

Detective Harris returned before I could fully process it.

He examined the screenshot.

"Could be fabricated."

"Could it be real?"

"Yes."

My chest tightened.

"From where?"

Leah was already searching.

Her face suddenly changed.

"Oh no."

"What?"

She turned her laptop around.

A trust account had been opened under my name three years earlier.

I had never seen it.

Never signed for it.

Never deposited into it.

The balance history showed hundreds of thousands moving in and out.

"I don't understand."

Leah pointed.

"This isn't your money."

"Then whose?"

"That's what worries me."

Detective Harris leaned closer.

"It may be laundering."

The word landed heavily.

"I could look involved."

Leah nodded.

"On paper, yes."

I felt sick.

Adrian hadn't just stolen from me.

He had built a financial trail that could make me look like his partner.

"I need to see my kids."

Camille stepped toward me.

"They're with Dad."

"I need them."

"You'll see them soon."

"No. I need to know they're safe."

My voice cracked.

Camille wrapped her arms around me.

"They're safe."

I cried into her shoulder for a minute.

Then stopped.

I couldn't collapse yet.

Not while Adrian's mess still had its hands around my life.

Detective Harris arranged for another officer to stay near Dad's house.

By evening, investigators confirmed the airport image was from that morning.

Adrian and Daniel had entered the building together.

Neither boarded a commercial flight.

Security footage later showed them leaving through different doors.

Daniel disappeared.

Adrian's location remained unknown.

Marcus wasn't answering calls.

The entire network seemed to be scattering.

That night, I returned home with Camille.

Police had already checked the house.

Still, every sound made me jump.

At midnight, I heard a tap against the kitchen window.

I froze.

Another tap.

Camille woke on the couch.

"What was that?"

We called 911.

Officers arrived and searched the yard.

Nothing.

Then one officer found a small envelope beneath the window.

My name was written on it.

Inside was a flash drive.

Camille stared.

"That's horror-movie nonsense."

"We're not plugging that into anything."

Police took it.

The next morning, Detective Harris called.

"The drive contains financial files."

"Whose?"

"Daniel Mercer's clients."

"Why send it to me?"

"We don't know."

"Anything about Adrian?"

"Yes."

I gripped the phone.

"What?"

"Records suggest Adrian started working with Mercer about five years ago."

Five years.

Long before Tiana.

Long before Brianna.

Long before I suspected anything.

"What did he do?"

"Recruitment. Account access. Identity information."

I closed my eyes.

"Recruitment?"

"People who trusted him."

My father.

Tiana.

Brianna.

Me.

Possibly coworkers.

Friends.

Family.

Adrian's greatest asset had never been financial skill.

It was trust.

He was a professional thief who didn't need to break into houses.

People opened doors for him.

"How much money?"

"We're still calculating."

"Millions?"

Silence.

That was my answer.

I sat down.

"What happens to me?"

"If evidence supports that your identity was used without consent, you're a victim."

"If."

"Vanessa."

"If someone doesn't believe me?"

"We build the case."

I hated uncertainty.

For years, Adrian had given me false certainty.

Now truth came with conditions.

Evidence.

Process.

Time.

That afternoon, Tiana came over with Nia.

It was the first time I met her daughter.

Nia was six.

Curly braids.

Purple backpack.

Serious eyes.

She stayed close to her mother.

Zoe and Caleb came home an hour later.

I watched the three children slowly start playing.

The sight nearly broke me.

They had all been pulled into the orbit of a man who treated families like tools.

Tiana stood beside me.

"I feel guilty."

"About what?"

"Nia loved him."

I looked at her.

"That's his fault."

"He promised he'd be her stepdad."

My throat tightened.

"He promised Zoe he'd coach soccer this spring."

We stood silently.

Then Tiana said, "I hated you before I met you."

I laughed softly.

"I hated you too."

"He made me hate a woman I'd never spoken to."

"Same."

She looked at the children.

"That might be the cruelest part."

I understood.

Adrian didn't just lie to us.

He weaponized us against each other before we even knew the other existed.

He made sure any truth would arrive contaminated by resentment.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered because Detective Harris had told me to.

"Vanessa."

Adrian.

My heart slammed.

"Where are you?"

"I can't tell you."

"Police are looking for you."

"I know."

"Come back."

"I can't."

"Because you're guilty?"

Silence.

"Because Daniel will kill me."

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

The newest story.

Maybe true.

Maybe another lie.

"Turn yourself in."

"You think jail protects me?"

"It protects us from you."

He inhaled sharply.

"Is that what you think I am?"

"Yes."

The word came easily now.

"A danger."

His voice broke.

"I never wanted any of this."

"You practiced my signature."

Silence.

"You stole my house."

"I was going to fix it."

"You stole money from my father."

"I was going to pay everyone back."

"You used Tiana."

Silence.

"You used Brianna."

More silence.

Then he whispered, "Daniel changed the rules."

I almost laughed.

"You still can't take responsibility."

"You don't understand."

"Then explain."

He hesitated.

"I helped him open accounts."

"Using stolen identities."

"I didn't know what he was doing at first."

"Then you learned."

"Yes."

"And stayed."

"Yes."

"Why?"

He breathed heavily.

"Because the money was good."

There it was.

Simple.

Ugly.

True.

"How much?"

"Enough."

"And the affairs?"

"Vanessa."

"No. Explain those too."

Silence.

"Tiana gave you money."

He said nothing.

"Brianna gave you money."

Still nothing.

"You targeted them."

"No."

"Then what?"

"I liked them."

The sentence disgusted me.

"You liked them enough to rob them?"

"I didn't plan everything."

"But you did it."

"Yes."

I closed my eyes.

Tiana stood nearby listening.

Her face was unreadable.

"Turn yourself in."

"I need something first."

"What?"

"The flash drive."

My stomach tightened.

"You sent it?"

"No."

"Then who did?"

"Marcus."

I stared at Tiana.

"Why?"

"Insurance."

"Against Daniel?"

"Against all of us."

A sound came through Adrian's phone.

A door.

His breathing changed.

"Vanessa."

"What?"

"If anything happens to me, the password is Zoe's birthday."

"What password?"

The line went dead.

I called back.

Nothing.

Detective Harris traced the call.

An abandoned motel two counties away.

Police arrived forty minutes later.

The room was empty.

Blood on the floor.

No body.

May you like

No Adrian.

But inside the bathroom trash can, officers found his wedding ring.
