Chapter 3 - The Signature

Adrian stared at the folder.

I stared at him.

For one terrible second, neither of us moved.

Then he laughed.

It was too casual.

Too quick.

"What are you doing with that?"

I ended the call with Tiana without speaking.

"Looking for Caleb's folder."

"In my financial records?"

He stepped into the laundry room.

I forced myself to breathe slowly.

"Why do you have a private bank account?"

His jaw tightened.

"Vanessa."

"Why?"

"It's investment money."

"From where?"

He didn't answer.

I lifted the statement.

"Because this says fifty-five thousand dollars came from a home equity line."

His eyes sharpened.

"You shouldn't go through my things."

I almost couldn't believe him.

"Your things?"

"That's not what I meant."

"You borrowed money against my house."

"Our house."

"My grandmother left that house to me."

"And I've paid bills there for eleven years."

The sentence hit me like a slap.

Not because he shouted.

Because he sounded entitled.

Like my inheritance had slowly become his simply because he'd lived inside it.

"How did you get the loan?"

He rubbed his forehead.

"You signed the paperwork."

"I did not."

"Yes, you did."

"I was in Atlanta on the date listed."

His face changed.

Barely.

But I saw it.

"You sign papers without reading all the time."

"No, Adrian. You put papers in front of me and tell me what they are."

"Same difference."

I stared at him.

"No. It isn't."

He reached for the folder.

I pulled it back.

"Give me that."

"Why?"

"Because you're angry and you're not thinking clearly."

There it was.

The same tactic Tiana had described.

Make the woman emotional.

Make himself rational.

I felt something inside me settle.

"I want an explanation."

"Tomorrow."

"Now."

"Vanessa, I'm not doing this with you."

He walked out.

I followed him.

"Did you forge my signature?"

He stopped.

Slowly turned.

"Watch what you accuse me of."

"Then answer."

His voice dropped.

"I would never hurt this family."

That wasn't an answer.

I realized then that Adrian almost never answered direct questions when the truth would cost him.

He replaced answers with declarations.

I love you.

I work hard.

I'm your husband.

You need to trust me.

He had built our marriage out of sentences that sounded like proof but weren't.

"Where were you tonight?" I asked.

"Work."

"Liar."

He froze.

I wished I could take the word back.

Not because it wasn't true.

Because I'd shown my hand.

His expression changed completely.

"Who have you been talking to?"

I stayed silent.

"Vanessa."

He stepped closer.

"Who?"

I thought about Tiana.

I thought about her daughter.

I thought about the account numbers.

"No one."

His eyes searched my face.

Then he smiled.

Coldly.

"You talked to her."

My stomach dropped.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"Yes, you do."

He grabbed his phone from the counter.

I moved between him and the door.

"What are you doing?"

"Fixing this."

"Fixing what?"

He didn't answer.

I watched his thumb move.

He called someone.

No response.

Again.

No response.

Again.

"Tiana," he muttered.

I said nothing.

He looked up at me.

"You went to her house?"

I didn't answer.

He laughed bitterly.

"So she filled your head with garbage."

"Funny. You told me I filled hers with garbage too."

His face went still.

That was the moment he knew.

Not suspected.

Knew.

I had talked to her.

He set his phone down carefully.

"Listen to me."

"No."

"Vanessa."

"No. I've listened to you for eleven years."

He stepped toward me.

I stepped back.

His expression softened instantly.

It was almost impressive.

"Baby."

My stomach turned.

"Don't call me that."

"I messed up."

"You committed fraud."

"No."

"You had an affair."

His eyes flickered.

Silence.

I laughed through my tears.

"You can't even deny it."

"Things between us have been hard."

"Don't."

"You've been distant."

"Don't you dare."

"We haven't been happy in a long time."

"I was happy!"

The words tore out of me.

I hated how vulnerable they sounded.

"I was happy because I thought my husband loved me."

Adrian looked away.

That hurt more than I expected.

"Was she the only one?"

He didn't answer.

I felt the room tilt.

"Was she?"

"Vanessa, tonight is not the time."

"How many?"

His jaw tightened.

I stepped closer.

"How many women?"

"Stop."

"How many?"

"Two."

The word landed softly.

That made it worse.

My mouth went dry.

"Tiana and who?"

He closed his eyes.

"Someone from work."

I backed away.

"Get out."

"Vanessa."

"Get out of my house."

"It's my house too."

"No."

"Legally—"

"Don't talk to me about legally."

I pointed toward the door.

"You forged documents. You stole money. You cheated with at least two women."

He stared at me.

"You don't even know what you signed."

"That's what Leah is going to figure out."

His face drained.

I had made another mistake.

He knew I had a lawyer involved.

"Leah?"

I said nothing.

He picked up his jacket.

"You're making this bigger than it needs to be."

I laughed.

"Bigger?"

"Yes."

He moved toward the door.

Then he stopped.

"You think Tiana is your friend now?"

I stared.

"You don't know her."

"I know enough."

"No, you don't."

He smiled.

"Ask her what she needed twenty thousand dollars for last summer."

My stomach tightened.

"What?"

"Ask her."

Then he walked out.

The front door slammed.

I stood alone in the kitchen.

My hands shook.

I wanted to call Tiana immediately.

Instead, I called Camille.

She arrived twenty minutes later.

The moment she saw me, she hugged me.

I broke.

I cried into my sister's shoulder like I hadn't cried since our mother died.

When I finally told her everything, she looked murderous.

"He forged your signature?"

"I think so."

"And he slept with that woman?"

"At least two."

Camille paced.

"I'm going to kill him."

"No."

"I'm serious."

"I need you calm."

She stopped.

"Since when are you calm?"

"I'm not."

I wiped my face.

"I'm terrified."

That was the truth.

Not just of losing my marriage.

Of discovering how much of my life was fake.

Camille stayed while I changed passwords.

Email.

Banking.

Cloud storage.

Phone account.

Then I texted Tiana.

Did Adrian give you $20,000 last summer?

The typing dots appeared.

Stopped.

Appeared again.

Finally:

No. He borrowed $20,000 from ME.

My heart pounded.

I called.

Tiana answered crying.

"He told me he needed it for his divorce."

I closed my eyes.

"He says you took money from him."

"He took money from me."

"Do you have proof?"

"Yes."

Her voice hardened.

"Every transfer."

"Save everything."

"I already did."

Then she went quiet.

"Vanessa?"

"What?"

"I found something else."

My stomach tightened.

"What?"

"I pulled my credit report."

I stopped breathing.

"There are two credit cards I never opened."

I gripped the counter.

"Balances?"

"Almost thirty thousand."

I closed my eyes.

Both accounts had been opened during her relationship with Adrian.

"Call the police."

"I'm going to."

Then she whispered, "You should check yours too."

I did.

My report loaded.

Mortgage.

Car.

Two cards I recognized.

Then another account appeared.

A personal loan.

Forty thousand dollars.

Opened six months ago.

I had never seen it.

I had never applied for it.

And beside the lender information was a mailing address.

May you like

Not mine.

Tiana's.
