Chapter 7: The Picture I Was Never Supposed To See
I stared at the photograph in Rachel’s hand.
For a moment, I couldn’t move.
It was old.
The edges were worn.
The kind of picture people keep hidden in boxes because they’re afraid of what will happen when someone finds it.
Rachel didn’t hand it to me immediately.
She just held it.
Like she was fighting with herself.
“Mark…”
“Give me the picture.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””
“Rachel.””
My voice was quieter now.
Not angry.
Just exhausted.
“After everything that happened, after Noah’s money, after all these secrets… I need the truth.””
She looked down.
Then she gave me the photograph.
I turned it over.
And my entire world shifted.
It was a picture from years ago.
Before the divorce.
Before everything fell apart.
Rachel was standing outside a restaurant.
Beside her was Daniel.
But that wasn’t what shocked me.
It was the person standing next to them.
My older brother.
Jason.
I stared at the photo.
“No.””
Rachel watched my reaction carefully.
“Yes.””
I looked at her.
“What is this?””
She swallowed.
“Proof.””
“Proof of what?””
Her voice trembled.
“That Daniel wasn’t the person who caused our marriage to end.””
I looked back at the picture.
Jason.
My own brother.
The person I trusted.
The person who had stood beside me at my wedding.
“What does Jason have to do with this?””
Rachel sat down.
“I should have told you years ago.””
“Yes.””
“I know.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
She looked away.
“Because I thought protecting you was better than destroying your relationship with your family.””
I laughed softly.
“Rachel, my relationship with my family was already destroyed.””
She closed her eyes.
“Not then.””
I sat across from her.
“Start from the beginning.””
She took a deep breath.
“After we got married, things were good.””
I nodded.
I remembered.
They were.
“We struggled sometimes, but we were happy.””
She touched the photograph.
“Then Jason started visiting more.””
My expression changed.
“Jason?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“He said he wanted to help.””
I felt something uncomfortable in my chest.
Because that sounded familiar.
Everyone who caused damage in this story seemed to arrive pretending they were helping.
“He offered advice. He offered money. He told me you were working too much and that you didn’t notice how stressed I was.””
I looked at her.
“And you believed him?””
“At first.””
She paused.
“Then he started saying things.””
“What things?””
“That you were going to leave me.””
I frowned.
“Why would he say that?””
“I don’t know.””
Rachel’s voice cracked.
“But he kept repeating it.””
I leaned back.
“Rachel, Jason hated conflict. He was always quiet.””
She looked at me.
“That’s what everyone thought.””
The room went silent.
I looked at the photograph again.
“What happened next?””
“One night, Jason came to the house.””
“When?””
“Three months before we separated.””
I remembered that time.
The arguments.
The tension.
The distance.
I thought it was because of work.
Because of stress.
Because we were both tired.
“He told me you were planning to leave.””
I shook my head.
“I wasn’t.””
“I know that now.””
“What did he show you?””
Rachel hesitated.
“Messages.””
“What messages?””
“On his phone.””
I stared.
“Between who?””
She looked directly at me.
“Between you and another woman.””
The words hit me.
“What?””
“I thought they were real.””
“Rachel, they weren’t.””
“I know.””
She said it quickly.
Too quickly.
“You know?””
She nodded.
“I found out later.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because by then everything had already fallen apart.””
I stood up.
“No.””
My hands started shaking.
“Rachel, you thought I cheated?””
“Yes.””
“And you never asked me?””
She looked down.
“I tried.””
“When?””
“The night we fought.””
I remembered.
A terrible night.
The night she packed a suitcase.
The night she said she couldn’t trust me anymore.
“I thought you didn’t want to hear my explanation.””
Rachel wiped her tears.
“I thought you had already chosen someone else.””
I walked toward the window.
My brother.
My own brother.
I couldn’t understand it.
“Why?””
Rachel whispered.
“Because he wanted something.””
“What?””
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
She stood.
“But I know he was lying.””
I looked at her.
“How?””
“Because months after we divorced, I found the truth.””
“What truth?””
She walked to the box again.
She pulled out another piece of paper.
This time, it wasn’t a photograph.
It was a letter.
“I found this in Jason’s old apartment after he moved.””
I took it.
The handwriting looked familiar.
I read the first line.
And my blood went cold.
It was written by Jason.
A confession.
Not complete.
Not clear.
But enough.
Enough to prove that someone had intentionally destroyed my marriage.
“Why didn’t you show me this?””
Rachel looked away.
“Because by then you hated me.””
“I never hated you.””
“You did.””
“No.””
“You blamed me.””
I didn’t answer.
Because she was right.
I blamed her.
For leaving.
For not trusting me.
For breaking our family apart.
But now I was looking at years of my life through a different lens.
A terrible possibility.
“What does this have to do with Noah’s money?””
Rachel looked at me.
“Everything.””
I froze.
“What?””
She took a deep breath.
“When Jason came back into our lives last year…”
My eyes widened.
“Jason came back?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She looked terrified.
“Because he knew about Noah’s account.””
The room became completely silent.
“He knew?””
Rachel nodded.
“And he convinced Daniel to pressure me.””
My jaw tightened.
“So Jason was behind this?””
“I don’t know.””
She looked at the letter.
“But I know one thing.””
“What?””
Rachel’s voice dropped.
“The person who ruined our marriage is the same person who started this fight over Noah’s money.””
I looked at the photograph again.
My brother standing beside Daniel.
My ex-wife.
A secret I should have known years ago.
Then my phone rang.
I looked at the screen.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A man’s voice spoke.
“Mark?””
“Yes?””
“You need to stop digging.””
My body went still.
“Who is this?””
A pause.
Then:
“Someone who knows what your brother did.””
The call ended.
And before I could process it, another message appeared.
A picture.
Not a recent one.
An old picture.
A picture of Jason.
May you like
And Noah.
Together.
