Chapter 6: The Person Behind The Money
Daniel didn’t move when I walked toward him.
That was the first thing I noticed.
Most people who get caught doing something wrong avoid confrontation.
Daniel didn’t.
He stood beside his car, hands in his pockets, looking completely calm.
Too calm.
The person standing next to him was older.
A woman.
I knew her immediately.
Rachel’s mother.
Linda.
My former mother-in-law.
I stopped walking.
“What is she doing here?””
Daniel glanced at Linda.
Then back at me.
“You should ask Rachel that.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Don’t do that.””
“Do what?””
“Act like you’re not involved.””
Linda looked uncomfortable.
That surprised me.
Because Linda had always been the person who defended Rachel.
During the divorce.
During arguments.
During every difficult moment.
Seeing her standing beside Daniel made something click.
“How long have you known?””
Linda looked down.
Daniel answered.
“Long enough.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
I looked at Linda.
“Tell me.””
She didn’t speak.
“Linda.””
Finally, she sighed.
“I knew about the money.””
The words hurt more than I expected.
“You knew?””
She nodded.
“I didn’t know everything.””
“But you knew he was using Noah’s account.””
“I knew Rachel borrowed money.””
“Borrowed?””
I laughed quietly.
“That’s what everyone keeps calling it.””
Linda looked ashamed.
“I thought she would fix it.””
“When?””
She had no answer.
Daniel stepped forward.
“You’re making this emotional.””
I turned toward him.
“This is my son’s future.””
“And Rachel made a decision.””
“No.””
I pointed at him.
“You encouraged her.””
Daniel’s face changed slightly.
A small reaction.
But I saw it.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””
“Then explain.””
Silence.
I stepped closer.
“Explain why you knew about Noah’s money.””
Daniel looked away.
That was the first time I saw uncertainty.
Then Linda spoke.
“Daniel told Rachel he needed help.””
I looked at her.
“What kind of help?””
She hesitated.
“A debt.””
Daniel immediately interrupted.
“Linda.””
“No.””
Her voice became stronger.
“This has gone too far.””
Daniel stared at her.
She continued.
“He told Rachel he was going to lose his house.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Your house?””
He didn’t answer.
“Was that true?””
Still nothing.
Linda shook her head.
“That’s when I found out something was wrong.””
“What?””
She looked at me.
“The house wasn’t in danger.””
My jaw tightened.
“Then what was?””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Enough.””
“No.””
I looked directly at him.
“You used my son’s money because you wanted to cover something else.””
His expression hardened.
“You think you know everything.””
“I know enough.””
“No, you don’t.””
For the first time, Daniel’s confidence cracked.
“You have no idea what Rachel was dealing with.””
“Then tell me.””
He looked at Linda.
Then at me.
And for a moment, I thought he might finally admit everything.
Instead, he said:
“Ask Rachel why she never told you the truth about the divorce.””
My stomach dropped.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel smiled.
Not a friendly smile.
A warning.
“It means you’ve been blaming the wrong person.””
I stared at him.
“No.””
“Yes.””
He opened his car door.
Before getting inside, he looked back.
“There’s a reason Rachel needed money.””
“And what reason is that?””
His hand paused on the door.
Then he said:
“Because she wasn’t the only one hiding something from you.””
The car drove away.
I stood there, frozen.
Because suddenly I remembered something.
A conversation from years ago.
A conversation Rachel refused to explain.
The night we separated.
The night she looked at me and said:
“Someday, you’ll understand why I did this.””
At the time, I thought she was talking about our marriage.
Now I wasn’t sure.
I walked back into Rachel’s house.
She was sitting exactly where I left her.
But when she saw my face, she knew.
“You saw him.””
“Yes.””
Her expression changed.
“What did he tell you?””
I stared at her.
“I need you to tell me the truth.””
She looked afraid.
“About what?””
“About the divorce.””
Her face went pale.
“Mark…”
“Why did we really break up?””
She looked down.
And after years of silence, she finally whispered the words I never expected to hear.
“Because Daniel wasn’t the reason I lost everything.””
I waited.
Rachel looked up.
“It was because of someone much closer to you.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
She reached for an old box hidden under the table.
And inside was something I had never seen before.
