Chapter 9: The Last Piece Of Sarah’s Truth

The person who walked into the coffee shop made my entire body freeze.

For a moment, I thought my mind was playing tricks on me.

Because standing there, holding a worn brown journal in his hands, was my father.

Richard Carter.

Again.

The man who had betrayed me.

The man who had hidden Sarah’s final words.

The man who had helped Vanessa destroy my family.

He looked older than I remembered.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like carrying the weight of his own choices had finally become too heavy.

“Dad…”

My voice came out quietly.

He looked at Vanessa.

Then at me.

“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Is there any other way left?””

Vanessa stepped aside.

For once, she wasn’t smiling.

She looked nervous.

That was the first time I realized something.

Even Vanessa was afraid of what my father had.

“What’s in the journal?”” I asked.

My father looked down.

“Everything.””

My hands tightened.

“Then why didn’t you give it to me?””

He closed his eyes.

“Because I was scared.””

“Scared?””

“Yes.””

His voice cracked.

“I was scared of what you would do when you found out.””

I stared at him.

“What could possibly be worse than what you already did?””

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he placed the journal on the table.

“Maya’s mother knew something was wrong before she died.””

I opened the journal carefully.

The first pages were memories.

Sarah writing about pregnancy.

About Maya’s first steps.

About dreams for our daughter.

Then the tone changed.

The handwriting became rushed.

Uneven.

Like she was afraid.

I read the first entry.

“Something is wrong with the financial accounts.””

My heart started pounding.

I turned the page.

“Someone has been moving money around. Small amounts. Enough that nobody notices.””

I looked up.

“Who?””

My father looked away.

Sarah had written another sentence.

“I don’t know who I can trust.””

The next pages contained dates.

Transactions.

Names.

And then one name appeared repeatedly.

Vanessa.

I looked at her.

Her face changed.

“That doesn’t prove anything.””

I kept reading.

Sarah had written:

“She keeps asking questions about Maya’s inheritance. She says she only wants to help, but something feels wrong.””

My stomach dropped.

Vanessa had known about the money before she married me.

Before she became part of our family.

Before she pretended to love my daughter.

“You knew.””

Vanessa looked angry.

“I knew Sarah had money set aside.””

“You knew about my daughter’s account.””

“I didn’t steal anything at first.””

The words came out before she could stop them.

The room became silent.

At first.

Then she realized what she had admitted.

My father stared at her.

“You were involved from the beginning.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You promised me everything would work.””

I felt sick.

“What?””

She looked between us.

And for the first time, the truth came out without a carefully prepared story.

“You think I planned this alone?””

My heart sank.

My father looked away.

I turned toward him slowly.

“No.””

He didn’t speak.

“Tell me I’m wrong.””

He stayed silent.

That was enough.

My own father had helped create this nightmare.

Not because he hated me.

Not because he wanted to hurt Maya.

But because he made choices he thought he could control.

And those choices destroyed everything.

“Why?””

My voice broke.

“Why would you do this?””

My father sat down.

“After Sarah died, I saw you struggling.””

“That doesn’t explain anything.””

“Vanessa came to me.””

I stared at him.

“She told me she could help you.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

“You introduced her to me?””

He nodded slowly.

“I thought she would bring happiness back into your life.””

I felt like the ground disappeared.

“You brought her into my home.””

“I was wrong.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were not wrong because you made a mistake.””

I pointed at the journal.

“You were wrong because Sarah warned you.””

My father looked down.

He had no answer.

Vanessa suddenly stood.

“This isn’t helping anyone.””

I turned toward her.

“You’re right.””

My voice became calm.

“And that’s why it ends today.””

She frowned.

“What?””

I pulled out my phone.

My lawyer was listening.

The entire conversation had been recorded.

Vanessa’s face changed.

“You tricked me?””

“No.””

I looked at her.

“I protected my daughter.””

The police arrived thirty minutes later.

Not dramatically.

Not like a movie.

Just quietly.

Professionally.

Because the truth didn’t need shouting.

It only needed evidence.

The bank records.

The notebook.

The recordings.

Sarah’s journal.

Everything Vanessa thought she had buried was finally visible.

As she was questioned, she looked at me.

“You’ll regret this.””

I looked at Maya’s picture on my phone.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I regret the time I lost believing you.””

Then she was gone.

But there was still one person standing there.

My father.

And I knew forgiveness would not come easily.

Because some wounds don’t disappear when the truth is revealed.

May you like

Some wounds stay.

But they stop controlling your life.
