Chapter 2: The Missing Savings
I drove home that evening with Maya sitting beside me in the back seat.
Normally, she would sing along to the radio.
She would tell me about school.
She would ask endless questions about everything she saw outside the window.
But that day, she was silent.
Too silent.
I looked at her through the rearview mirror.
“Sweetheart, can I ask you something?””
She nodded.
“Has Vanessa ever hurt you before?””
Her fingers tightened around the edge of her jacket.
That was my answer before she even spoke.
“I don’t want you to be mad.””
My heart sank.
“I’m not mad at you.””
She looked out the window.
“Sometimes she gets angry when you’re not home.””
I gripped the steering wheel.
“What does she do?””
Maya stayed quiet for several seconds.
Then she whispered:
“She says I cost too much.””
I felt my jaw tighten.
“She says I’m not her real daughter.””
Every word felt like another weight being placed on my chest.
I pulled the car into the driveway but didn’t turn off the engine.
“Maya, why didn’t you tell me?””
She looked down.
“Because every time I tried, she said you would believe her.””
That sentence hurt more than anything else.
Because I realized something terrifying.
Vanessa hadn’t just been hurting my daughter.
She had been teaching her to stay quiet.
Inside the house, Vanessa was already waiting.
She stood in the living room with her arms crossed.
“I assume Noah exaggerated everything.””
I walked inside slowly.
“Where is Maya’s savings account information?””
Her face changed.
Just slightly.
But I saw it.
“What?””
“The account Sarah created for Maya.””
Vanessa laughed nervously.
“Why are you suddenly accusing me?””
“Because Noah said you took money from it.””
She immediately looked toward the hallway.
A mistake.
A tiny one.
But enough.
“You questioned a child over me?””
I stepped closer.
“I’m questioning my wife because my daughter is afraid of her.””
The room went quiet.
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“She has always been difficult.””
I stared at her.
“Don’t talk about my daughter like that.””
“She manipulates you.””
“No.””
My voice became colder.
“She’s seven years old.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“You don’t understand what it’s like raising someone else’s child.””
The moment she said it, I knew.
She had never seen Maya as her own.
Not once.
I went upstairs and opened the drawer where I kept important documents.
The account information was missing.
Not misplaced.
Missing.
I searched the entire room.
Nothing.
Then I remembered something.
A few months earlier, Vanessa had insisted on “organizing” all of our financial paperwork.
I had trusted her.
That trust suddenly felt like the biggest mistake of my life.
The next morning, I went to the bank.
After verifying my identity, the manager looked through the records.
His expression slowly changed.
“Mr. Carter…”
“What?””
“There have been several withdrawals.””
My stomach dropped.
“How much?””
He hesitated.
“Almost all of it.””
I stared at him.
“How?””
“She was listed as an authorized user.””
I felt the room spin.
Sarah’s final gift to our daughter.
The money meant for Maya’s future.
Gone.
“Where did it go?””
The manager looked at the screen.
“I can’t discuss every detail here, but I can tell you the withdrawals were made over several months.””
Months.
While I was working.
While Maya was wearing broken shoes.
While Vanessa was telling my daughter she didn’t deserve anything.
I left the bank and called Vanessa.
She answered immediately.
“Where are you?””
I didn’t say anything.
“Hello?””
I finally spoke.
“What did you do with Maya’s money?””
Silence.
A long silence.
Then she whispered:
“You found out.””
My hands tightened around the phone.
“What did you spend it on?””
Another pause.
Then Vanessa said something that made my blood run cold.
“It wasn’t just for me.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Her voice became defensive.
“You have no idea what I sacrificed for this family.””
“This was Maya’s money.””
“She was never going to need all of it.””
I closed my eyes.
Then I heard a noise behind me.
I turned.
Noah was standing outside the bank entrance.
He looked scared.
But he walked toward me.
“Dad…”
I lowered the phone.
“What?””
He looked at me with tears in his eyes.
“There’s something else you need to know.””
I waited.
Noah took a deep breath.
“Vanessa didn’t just take Maya’s money.””
He looked back toward the street.
“She was planning to leave.””
My heart stopped.
“Leave?””
Noah nodded.
“And she already bought something with Maya’s savings.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
He reached into his backpack and pulled out a small envelope.
“I found this hidden in her room.””
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside was a receipt.
And one name.
The name of the person Vanessa had been spending Maya’s money on.
May you like
I looked down.
And I realized the truth was far worse than I imagined.
