Chapter 8: The Man Sarah Feared

No one moved.

Not even Dr. Hayes.

For years, I had trusted that man.

I had shaken his hand.

I had thanked him.

I had told him he was the reason Sarah had more time with us.

And now he stood inside my home like he belonged there.

Like he wasn’t the person my wife feared.

Like he wasn’t connected to every secret I had uncovered.

I stepped between him and my children.

“How did you get into my house?””

Dr. Hayes looked around calmly.

“Daniel, I think emotions are getting ahead of facts.””

I almost couldn’t believe him.

“Answer the question.””

He sighed.

“Sarah gave me a spare key years ago.””

My stomach tightened.

That was true.

Sarah trusted him.

That was why it hurt.

I looked at Vanessa.

She was shaking.

Michael stood silently near the wall.

Everyone was afraid.

Everyone except Dr. Hayes.

He walked farther inside.

“You’re making a mistake.””

I stared at him.

“My daughter was being denied food.””

His expression changed slightly.

“I didn’t know about that.””

“But you knew about everything else?””

Silence.

That was enough.

I pulled out my phone.

“I’m calling the police.””

Dr. Hayes smiled faintly.

“Before you do that, maybe you should hear the truth.””

I laughed.

“The truth?””

I pointed toward the hidden rooms.

“My children were afraid in their own home.””

His face remained calm.

“That wasn’t my decision.””

“No.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“But you were involved.””

Vanessa lowered her head.

Dr. Hayes looked disappointed.

“You always were emotional, Daniel.””

That sentence made me freeze.

Because it sounded exactly like the way Vanessa talked.

Like my feelings were a weakness.

Like I couldn’t be trusted to think clearly.

I looked at Michael.

“Is he the one?””

Michael nodded.

“Yes.””

Dr. Hayes shook his head.

“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.””

I stepped closer.

“Then explain.””

He looked at Lily.

Then Noah.

“Your children were never in danger.””

Lily immediately moved closer to me.

I saw her fear.

And that told me everything.

I looked at Dr. Hayes.

“You don’t get to decide that.””

For the first time, his expression changed.

Anger.

Only for a second.

But it was there.

Michael noticed too.

“See?””

Dr. Hayes looked at him.

“Stay out of this.””

Michael laughed.

“Still giving orders?””

The tension in the room grew.

I looked at the flash drive on the table.

“What’s on that?””

Dr. Hayes became quiet.

Too quiet.

Then he said:

“You really want to know?””

“Yes.””

He looked at Vanessa.

Then Michael.

Then me.

“Sarah discovered that her illness wasn’t as random as everyone believed.””

My heart stopped.

“What are you saying?””

Noah grabbed Lily’s hand.

Dr. Hayes continued.

“Your wife was investigating why certain patients had unusual complications.””

I stared at him.

“Are you saying…”

“I’m saying Sarah found a pattern.””

The room felt smaller.

“She found out someone had been manipulating medical records.””

I felt sick.

“Who?””

Dr. Hayes smiled.

Not kindly.

“You already know.””

I stepped backward.

“No.””

He walked toward the table.

“You trusted me because you needed someone to trust.””

I looked at him.

“You were her doctor.””

“And you were a grieving husband.””

The cruelty of those words made my chest tighten.

He wasn’t denying it.

He was admitting it.

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

“Enough.””

Everyone looked at her.

She wiped her tears.

“I made terrible choices.””

Her voice shook.

“But Sarah was trying to stop you.””

She pointed at Dr. Hayes.

“And you know that.””

For the first time, Dr. Hayes looked nervous.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Michael quickly grabbed the flash drive.

“Daniel, we need to leave.””

Dr. Hayes moved toward him.

“No.””

I stepped between them.

“Nobody moves.””

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A woman’s voice spoke.

“Daniel Carter?””

“Yes.””

The voice became quiet.

“I knew Sarah.””

My heart stopped.

“Who is this?””

The woman hesitated.

Then said:

“I was the last person your wife called before she died.””

I looked at everyone in the room.

Dr. Hayes.

Vanessa.

Michael.

Then the stranger on the phone.

“Why are you calling me now?””

Her answer made everyone freeze.

“Because Sarah didn’t die from her illness.””

I couldn’t breathe.

The woman continued.

“She was trying to expose someone.””

A pause.

“And the person who caused her death is standing in your house right now.””

I slowly looked up.

Every person in the room became still.

May you like

Because suddenly…

I had no idea who I could trust.
