Chapter 7: The Truth Sarah Buried

Sarah’s wedding ring sat in Michael’s palm.

The same ring I had searched for after her funeral.

The same ring I thought had been lost forever.

I remembered that day clearly.

I had opened every drawer.

Checked every box.

Looked through every bag.

I had convinced myself that maybe the hospital had misplaced it.

Maybe someone had taken it.

Maybe grief had made me forget where I put it.

But now it was here.

In the hand of a man I had never met.

A man my wife had apparently known better than I did.

“Where did you get that?””

My voice barely sounded like my own.

Michael looked at the ring.

“She gave it to me.””

The room went silent.

I felt Lily move closer to Noah.

Vanessa looked like she was about to collapse.

“No,” she whispered.

Michael looked at her.

“You knew this day would come.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I thought she destroyed everything.””

I turned toward her.

“Destroyed what?””

No one answered.

That was when I realized something.

Everyone in that room knew pieces of the truth.

Everyone except me.

I stepped forward.

“I’m done being the last person to know what’s happening in my own family.””

Michael studied me.

Then slowly placed the ring on the table.

“Your wife was investigating something before she died.””

I frowned.

“Investigating what?””

“Her own family.””

I looked at Vanessa.

Then Michael.

“You’re both saying Sarah was hiding things from me.””

Michael nodded.

“She was trying to protect you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Protect me by keeping secrets?””

Michael didn’t react.

“Daniel, if Sarah told you everything, you would have confronted people before she was ready.””

“Who?””

He looked toward Vanessa.

“Us.””

My stomach dropped.

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked away.

“Explain.””

Michael took a deep breath.

“Vanessa and I were involved in something years ago.””

“What kind of something?””

“Financial manipulation.””

The words sounded unreal.

Michael continued.

“We targeted vulnerable families. People who trusted too easily. People who believed someone was helping them.””

I stared at Vanessa.

“No.””

She whispered.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You walked into my life because of money?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“At first.””

That answer hurt more than I expected.

At first.

Meaning there was more.

I looked at her.

“Then why stay?””

Vanessa looked toward Lily.

Then Noah.

“Because Sarah changed everything.””

I didn’t understand.

Michael spoke.

“She was supposed to be part of the plan.””

My face went cold.

“What plan?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“The plan was to get close to Sarah’s family after she became sick.””

I felt sick.

My children.

My house.

My grief.

Everything.

“You used my wife.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

The honesty almost made it worse.

“But I didn’t expect to care about her.””

I looked at her.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“I don’t expect forgiveness.””

For the first time, I saw Vanessa without the excuses.

Without the anger.

Just someone facing the damage she caused.

Michael stepped closer.

“But when Sarah discovered the truth, she didn’t expose us immediately.””

“Why?””

“Because she found out something worse.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

Michael’s face became serious.

“She found out I wasn’t the person controlling everything.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“There’s someone else?””

Michael nodded.

“Someone above us.””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“Michael, stop.””

“No.””

He looked at her.

“It’s time.””

I glanced at my children.

“Who?””

Michael looked toward the front door.

“Someone Sarah trusted.””

That sentence made my heart sink.

Because there was only one person I could think of.

Someone who had been around our family for years.

Someone who knew Sarah.

Someone who knew me.

“Who?””

Michael hesitated.

Then he said the name.

“Your wife’s doctor.””

The room went completely still.

I remembered him.

Dr. Robert Hayes.

The man who treated Sarah during her illness.

The man who comforted me when I was falling apart.

The man who told me he would do anything to help my family.

I whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

Michael looked at me.

“Sarah said the same thing.””

My hands shook.

“What did she find?””

Michael reached into his pocket and pulled out a small flash drive.

“She copied evidence.””

I stared at it.

“Evidence of what?””

Before he could answer, Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“Daniel…”

Her voice was filled with fear.

“You need to listen carefully.””

I turned toward her.

“What?””

She looked at my children.

Then at me.

“Sarah didn’t leave the warning for herself.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“She knew she might not survive.””

The room became silent.

“She left the warning for the day when Dr. Hayes came back.””

I looked at Michael.

“Came back?””

He nodded.

“Because he never stopped.””

Then the front door opened.

Everyone froze.

A familiar voice entered the house.

“Daniel?””

My blood turned cold.

I knew that voice.

I had heard it many times.

At hospitals.

At appointments.

During the darkest moments of my life.

Dr. Robert Hayes stepped inside.

And smiled.

“I heard there was some confusion.””

Nobody spoke.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

May you like

His smile disappeared.

“You weren’t supposed to tell him yet.””
