Chapter 9: The Story She Told Everyone

For a moment, I couldn’t speak.

The accusation was so unexpected that my mind struggled to process it.

“She said what?””

Rachel took a slow breath on the other end of the phone.

“She’s telling people that you are controlling. That you pressure the children. That you make them afraid to speak because you’re too strict.””

I looked around my living room.

At the letters from my late wife.

At the security recordings.

At the box of memories that proved the opposite.

My hands tightened around the phone.

“Who does she tell?””

“Friends. Neighbors. People from the school.””

My stomach dropped.

“The school?””

“Yes.””

I walked toward the window.

Outside, everything looked normal.

Cars passing.

People walking their dogs.

A regular morning.

But my family was falling apart inside these walls.

“Why are you telling me this?””

Rachel was quiet.

Then she answered.

“Because I believed her at first.””

That surprised me.

“What?””

“I worked with Claire for almost a year. She was good at making people feel sorry for her.””

I didn’t say anything.

Because I knew exactly what Rachel meant.

Claire had done that with me.

She had shown me the version of herself she wanted me to see.

The caring woman.

The woman who sacrificed.

The woman who had taken on two grieving children.

“What changed?””

Rachel sighed.

“I saw the way she talked when nobody else was around.””

My grip tightened.

“What do you mean?””

“She didn’t talk like someone struggling. She talked like someone who believed she owned the situation.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Do you have proof?””

“Yes.””

My heart started beating faster.

“What kind?””

“Messages.””

“From Claire?””

“Yes.””

I looked toward the stairs.

Where my children were sleeping.

“Can you send them to me?””

“I already did.””

My phone buzzed.

A new message appeared.

I opened it.

Screenshots.

The first one was a conversation between Claire and Rachel.

Claire wrote:

“He needs to learn that children cannot run the house.””

Rachel replied:

“They’re just kids.””

Claire answered:

“That’s why they need someone strong.””

I scrolled.

Another message.

Claire:

“Daniel is too emotional. He lets them manipulate him.””

Another:

“Once he sees how difficult they are, he’ll understand why I had to be strict.””

I stared at the screen.

She had built an entire story.

And in that story, she was the victim.

I heard footsteps behind me.

I turned.

Lily and Noah were standing there.

They looked worried.

“Daddy?””

I immediately put my phone down.

“What’s wrong?””

Noah looked at me.

“Is Claire coming back?””

The question caught me off guard.

I knelt down.

“I don’t know.””

Lily hugged her rabbit tighter.

“Is she mad?””

I looked at both of them.

“Yes.””

They lowered their eyes.

“But not because of you.””

Lily looked confused.

“Then why?””

I took a breath.

“Because she got caught.””

The words were difficult to say.

But my children deserved honesty.

Not another secret.

A few hours later, I met with my lawyer.

I brought every piece of evidence.

The recordings.

The messages.

The documents.

The letters.

Mark reviewed everything carefully.

When he finally looked up, his expression was serious.

“You have enough to protect the children.””

I nodded.

“But I need to know something.””

“What?””

“Why did she do this?””

Mark leaned back.

“Sometimes people convince themselves control is the same as care.””

I looked at the evidence.

“But she knew.””

“Yes.””

“And she kept going.””

He nodded.

“That’s why the important thing now is not understanding her excuses.””

I looked at him.

“It’s protecting your children.””

Those words stayed with me.

Because for two years, I had been protecting an image.

A marriage.

A family picture.

But I had forgotten the people inside it.

That evening, I came home and found an envelope on the doorstep.

No name.

No address.

Just my name written across the front.

Daniel.

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

A handwritten note.

“I know what you’re planning.””

My heart sank.

Then I read the next line.

“You think the recordings will save you.””

I looked around.

The street was empty.

The note continued.

“But you don’t know what your children have been told about you.””

I froze.

A second page fell out.

It was a printed photograph.

My children.

Standing outside the school.

And behind them was Claire.

The photo was recent.

Very recent.

I turned the page over.

May you like

There was one sentence written on the back.

“She already started.””
