Chapter 6: The Family Member I Trusted
I drove to Ryan’s house alone.
I told Lily and Noah I would be back soon.
I promised them.
But before I left, I made another promise.
One I should have made years ago.
“No more secrets.””
Lily nodded.
Noah held my hand.
And that moment stayed with me during the entire drive.
Because I finally understood something.
My children did not need me to be perfect.
They needed me to be present.
Ryan lived twenty minutes away.
The same house I had visited every Sunday.
The same house where he had hugged my children.
The same house where I believed they were loved.
When he opened the door, he didn’t look surprised.
He stepped aside.
“I knew you would come.””
I walked inside.
“Then you know why I’m here.””
Ryan closed the door.
“You watched the videos.””
“Yes.””
He nodded.
“I figured.””
I stared at him.
“How long?””
He looked confused.
“How long what?””
“How long have you known?””
Ryan sighed.
“Since the beginning.””
The answer made my stomach twist.
“Since the beginning of what?””
“Since Claire started struggling.””
I laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because I couldn’t believe him.
“You call that struggling?””
“I call it losing control.””
“And you helped her.””
Ryan crossed his arms.
“I tried to help you.””
“No.””
My voice became sharper.
“You helped yourself feel right.””
His jaw tightened.
“You have always been too emotional.””
I stared at him.
“My children were afraid in their own home.””
“And they were disrespectful.””
The words shocked me.
“What?””
Ryan walked toward the kitchen.
“They ignored Claire. They challenged her. They knew she wasn’t their real mother and used that.””
I followed him.
“They are children.””
“And children need structure.””
“Structure is not fear.””
Ryan looked at me.
“You don’t understand because you weren’t there.””
I stepped closer.
“I wasn’t there because I trusted my wife.””
“And that was your mistake.””
The room went quiet.
Because I realized something.
Ryan didn’t regret what happened.
He regretted being caught.
“Did you tell Claire to punish them?””
“No.””
“Did you tell her to scare them?””
“No.””
“Then why did she think she had permission?””
Ryan looked away.
That was the answer.
“You knew.””
He didn’t respond.
“You knew what was happening.””
“I knew Claire was overwhelmed.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
Ryan rubbed his face.
“She needed support.””
“So you gave her approval.””
“No.””
“You gave her a reason.””
His silence confirmed it.
I felt betrayed in a way I couldn’t explain.
Claire was my wife.
But Ryan was my family.
I could understand someone losing control.
I could understand someone making mistakes.
But two people deciding my children’s fear was acceptable?
That was something else.
“I want the truth.””
Ryan sat down.
“Fine.””
I remained standing.
“Claire called me because she felt like you didn’t understand how difficult it was.””
“Difficult?””
“Yes.””
“With what?””
“Being a stepmother.””
I shook my head.
“She knew what she was choosing.””
Ryan looked at me.
“Did she?””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
He hesitated.
Then reached into a drawer.
He pulled out an envelope.
“I kept this because I thought you would eventually need to know.””
I stared at it.
“What is that?””
“Something Claire never told you.””
I took the envelope.
My hands felt strangely heavy.
Inside was a document.
The first page had Claire’s name.
And another name beside it.
A name I recognized.
A name that made my entire body go cold.
Because it wasn’t Ryan’s.
It wasn’t mine.
It was my first wife’s.
I looked up.
“What is this?””
Ryan’s expression changed.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
“That’s the part Claire didn’t want you to find.””
I looked back at the paper.
And I realized the story I thought I knew about my family…
May you like
was missing the one thing that could explain everything.
The truth about why Claire came into our lives in the first place.
