Chapter 7: The Truth Behind Rosie’s Birth

The room felt like it had stopped breathing.

I looked at Daniel.

Then at Ben.

Then back at the phone in my hand.

My mother’s final words repeated in my head.

*Do not believe Daniel.*

My entire life, my mother’s voice had been the one that made me feel safe.

When I was scared as a child, she was the person I ran to.

When Rosie cried, my mother was the person who held her.

When the world treated my sister like she was different, my mother was the person who told her she was perfect.

But now she was warning me away from the man Rosie had searched for.

The man Rosie had forgiven.

The man who had been carrying answers.

I looked at Daniel.

“What happened?””

He didn’t respond.

That scared me.

Because a guilty person would usually defend themselves.

They would rush to explain.

Daniel just looked exhausted.

Like he had spent years waiting for this moment.

“Emma,” Ben said quietly.

I turned to him.

“What?””

“Don’t make a decision based on fear.””

I looked at him.

“What am I supposed to base it on?””

“The truth.””

I laughed bitterly.

“The truth keeps changing every five minutes.””

Nobody argued.

Because nobody could.

Daniel slowly took the document from my hand.

“I understand why your mother said that.””

My eyes narrowed.

“You understand?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because from her perspective, I am the person who hurt her family.””

The honesty surprised me.

“You abandoned Rosie.””

His face tightened.

“Yes.””

“You left.””

“Yes.””

“You weren’t there when she needed you.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

I waited for excuses.

There weren’t any.

“I was twenty-one,” he said quietly.

I looked away.

“I know.””

“I was scared.””

“So was everyone else.””

“I know.””

His voice cracked.

“But fear doesn’t erase what I did.””

The room went silent.

Ben looked at him differently.

Not with trust.

Not with forgiveness.

But with respect.

Because Daniel wasn’t trying to pretend he was innocent.

He was admitting he failed.

“I made the worst decision of my life,” Daniel continued.

“I thought leaving would make things easier.””

He looked at the pictures of Rosie.

“I thought her parents would give her a better life.””

My jaw tightened.

“And did they?””

Daniel smiled sadly.

“Yes.””

That answer surprised me.

He looked at me.

“Your parents loved her.””

“Then why hide all of this?””

His expression changed.

“That is the question Rosie was trying to answer.””

I looked down at the papers.

“The baby switch.””

Daniel nodded.

“Rosie found those records.””

“How?””

“Through a medical archive.””

“Why would she even look?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Because she found a mistake.””

“What kind of mistake?””

He walked toward the table and placed another document in front of me.

“This.””

I picked it up.

It was an old hospital record.

A birth certificate.

A patient identification number.

A handwritten correction.

My eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

The name wasn’t Rosie Carter.

It was another baby’s name.

A baby girl born the same day.

I felt dizzy.

“Why is another name here?””

Daniel sat down.

“Because Rosie discovered that two babies were recorded incorrectly.””

I looked at him.

“Are you saying my parents raised someone else’s child?””

“No.””

His answer was immediate.

“I’m saying the hospital made a mistake.””

“Then why does this matter?””

“Because the mistake affected more than paperwork.””

Ben stepped closer.

“What are you saying?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Rosie wasn’t just trying to find out who her biological father was.””

He looked at me.

“She was trying to find out why her medical history didn’t match her records.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Daniel pointed to the papers.

“Rosie had been told her entire life that certain health problems were connected to Down syndrome.””

I nodded slowly.

“That’s what doctors said.””

“But Rosie noticed something.””

“What?””

Daniel’s voice became softer.

“She had symptoms that didn’t make sense.””

My stomach tightened.

“What symptoms?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“Things doctors ignored because they assumed everything was because of her diagnosis.””

I felt anger rise.

Because I knew exactly what he meant.

People had always explained Rosie away.

“She found another doctor.””

Daniel nodded.

“And that doctor noticed something.””

“What?””

“That some of Rosie’s medical history belonged to another child.””

The room became silent.

I stared at the papers.

My sister.

My Rosie.

Had spent years being misunderstood because everyone thought they already knew her story.

Ben looked at Daniel.

“Did Rosie know?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

I looked up.

“A month?””

“Yes.””

“And she kept it from me?””

Daniel looked at me sadly.

“She didn’t want you to panic.””

I closed my eyes.

Again.

Always protecting me.

Always thinking about everyone else.

“She should have told me.””

“Yes.””

Daniel’s answer surprised me.

“She should have.””

I looked at him.

“You’re not defending her?””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“Rosie was strong. But sometimes strong people forget they are allowed to need help.””

That sentence broke something inside me.

Because it was exactly what I needed to hear.

My sister wasn’t fragile.

But she wasn’t invincible either.

I looked at the documents again.

“What was the real problem?””

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he pulled out another envelope.

“This.””

My hands froze.

“Another one?””

He nodded.

“Rosie gave this to me three days ago.””

“Why didn’t you show me?””

“Because she told me not to.””

I stared.

“Everyone keeps following her instructions.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because Rosie was smarter than all of us.””

I almost smiled.

Almost.

“What does it say?””

Daniel handed it to me.

This time, the handwriting was Rosie’s.

My heart hurt before I even opened it.

*Emma,*

*I know you are angry with me.*

A tear slipped down my face.

She knew.

Of course she knew.

*You always think you have to carry everything for me. But I need you to know something. I never wanted to be your responsibility. I wanted to be your sister.*

I stopped reading.

My vision blurred.

Ben looked away.

Giving me privacy.

I continued.

**I found out something about my medical records. It scared me at first. But then I realized something. My whole life, people have tried to tell me who I am.

Doctors. Strangers. Even sometimes people who love me.**

My fingers tightened around the paper.

*But I know who I am.*

I closed my eyes.

That was Rosie.

Always.

*I am Rosie. I am Ben’s wife. I am Emma’s sister. I am Mom and Dad’s daughter.*

A sob escaped.

Then I saw the next line.

And my heart stopped.

*But there is one thing I need you to know before you trust anyone.*

I looked up.

“Before you trust anyone?””

Daniel looked worried.

I kept reading.

*The person who changed my records is still alive.*

My blood ran cold.

I read the sentence again.

*The person who changed my records is still alive.*

A sound escaped my throat.

“No.””

Ben stepped closer.

“What?””

I handed him the letter.

He read it.

His face changed.

Daniel whispered:

“Rosie told me she knew who it was.””

I looked at him.

“Who?””

He hesitated.

Then he said:

“She said it was someone close to your family.””

My heart started pounding.

“No.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Emma…”

“No.””

Because I already knew what my mind was trying to tell me.

The person who had access to the records.

The person who knew the truth.

The person who had something to hide.

My parents.

But then Ben suddenly looked toward the front door.

His face changed.

“What?””

He didn’t answer.

He walked slowly toward the window.

I followed.

Outside, a car was parked across the street.

The headlights were off.

Someone was sitting inside.

Watching the house.

Ben’s voice became a whisper.

“That car has been there since we arrived.””

My skin turned cold.

“Who is it?””

Daniel stepped beside us.

And the moment he saw the car, his face went pale.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“You know that car?””

He didn’t answer.

The driver’s door opened.

A person stepped out.

Then walked slowly toward the house.

My heart pounded as the figure came closer.

The porch light turned on.

And I saw the face.

My entire body went numb.

Because the person standing outside the door was someone I never expected.

Someone who had spent my entire life telling me they loved Rosie.

May you like

Someone who had just warned me not to trust Daniel.

My mother.
