Chapter 2: The Letter Rosie Left Behind
The words on the paper blurred before my eyes.
I read the first line again.
Then again.
My brain refused to accept what I was seeing.
It was impossible.
It couldn’t be real.
My hands started shaking so badly that Ben reached forward and held my wrist.
“Breathe,” he whispered.
But how was I supposed to breathe?
How was I supposed to take in a truth that changed everything I thought I knew?
The letter wasn’t from Ben.
It wasn’t a confession.
It wasn’t some secret plan.
It was from Rosie.
My sister.
My little sister who used to crawl into my bed during thunderstorms because she was afraid of the lightning.
My sister who saved every birthday card she ever received.
My sister who believed every person she loved was good until they proved otherwise.
And at the top of the page were four words written in her familiar handwriting.
*For my sister, Emma.*
I covered my mouth.
“Why would she write this?””
Ben looked away.
“Because she knew this day might come.””
My eyes snapped back to him.
“What day?””
“The day when you would blame yourself.””
The hallway suddenly felt colder.
“What?””
Ben sat beside me.
“Rosie always worried about you.””
I almost laughed.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
I stared at him.
“She was the one everyone worried about.””
Ben shook his head.
“That’s what you never understood.””
He pointed to the letter.
“She knew people saw her as someone who needed protecting. But she also saw you.””
My fingers tightened around the paper.
I started reading.
*Emma,*
**If you are reading this, something happened and Ben finally kept his promise. I know you are probably angry right now. Maybe scared.
Maybe confused. You might even think Ben did something wrong.**
My throat tightened.
Because she was right.
She knew me too well.
I kept reading.
*Please don’t be angry at him. Please listen before you decide what you think.*
I looked up.
Ben was staring at the floor.
“Why would she think I would be angry?””
He swallowed.
“Because she knew how much you loved her.””
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It does.””
His voice was quiet.
“Because the truth is, Emma, you’ve spent your whole life trying to protect Rosie.””
I opened my mouth to argue.
But nothing came out.
Because I knew he was right.
When Rosie was born, I wasn’t even old enough to understand what Down syndrome meant.
I only knew adults whispered.
I only knew my parents looked scared.
I only knew my mother cried sometimes when she thought nobody was watching.
As I got older, I started noticing the way people treated Rosie.
The stares.
The comments.
The assumptions.
And I made a promise to myself.
Nobody would hurt her if I could stop it.
But somewhere along the way, I forgot something important.
Rosie wasn’t just someone I had to protect.
She was her own person.
She had dreams.
She had choices.
She had a heart that was bigger than mine.
I looked back at the letter.
*I know you always thought I needed someone to take care of me. But Ben never did that. He never treated me like I was fragile.*
My eyes moved slowly across the page.
*That is why I chose him.*
I froze.
Chose him.
Not because he felt sorry for her.
Not because he was being kind.
Because she chose him.
Ben wiped his face.
“She made me promise something before we got married.””
“What?””
“That if she ever got the chance, she wanted you to know the truth.””
“What truth?””
He looked at me.
“That she was the one who saved me.””
I frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
Ben looked toward the operating room doors.
For the first time since I arrived at the hospital, I saw something besides fear in his eyes.
I saw guilt.
“I wasn’t the person you think I was when I met Rosie.””
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
He took a deep breath.
“I need to tell you everything.””
I wanted to interrupt.
I wanted to demand answers.
But something stopped me.
Maybe it was the way he looked completely broken.
Maybe it was the fact that my sister had trusted him with something important.
Or maybe it was because deep down, I knew the truth was not going to be simple.
Ben leaned back against the wall.
“When Rosie and I first became friends, everyone thought I was helping her.””
I nodded slowly.
“That’s what everyone thought.””
He gave a bitter smile.
“But they were wrong.””
“Why?””
He looked down at his hands.
“Because I was the one who needed help.””
The hallway fell silent.
I watched him carefully.
“What happened?””
Ben didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he pulled out his phone.
He opened an old photo.
Then he handed it to me.
It was a picture of Ben and Rosie sitting at a park.
But something about it felt strange.
They weren’t smiling like a couple.
They looked like two people who had just survived something.
“When was this?””
“Three years before we got married.””
I looked at him.
“Ben, you and Rosie weren’t even dating then.””
“I know.””
“Then what was happening?””
His jaw tightened.
“That was the day Rosie found out I was planning to leave town.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“Leave?””
He nodded.
“I was going through something.””
“What kind of something?””
Ben looked away.
“Something I never told you.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
My best friend.
The person who had been part of my family for decades.
Had been hiding something from me.
But Rosie knew.
Why did Rosie know?
I looked at the letter again.
The next paragraph answered that question.
*Ben thinks he failed me because he couldn’t save everyone. But he doesn’t understand. He saved me because he believed in me.*
I felt tears gathering in my eyes.
*Before I met Ben, people always told me what I could not do. They told me what I could never become.*
My fingers traced the handwriting.
*Ben was the first person who asked me what I wanted.*
I stopped.
That sentence hurt.
Because it made me realize something.
I had spent years saying I would protect Rosie.
But had I ever asked her what she wanted?
Or had I just assumed?
Ben watched me read.
“She wanted you to understand.””
“Understand what?””
“That I didn’t marry her because I was being noble.””
He leaned forward.
“I married her because she changed my life.””
I stared at him.
“Then why did you say it was worse than I thought?””
His expression darkened.
“Because there’s another part.””
My stomach tightened.
“Another part of what?””
He looked at the paper.
“The reason Rosie was so desperate for me to tell you.””
I waited.
He hesitated.
Then he said something that made my entire body go still.
“She knew something about your family.””
I blinked.
“My family?””
Ben nodded.
“What does that mean?””
“She found something.””
“What?””
His eyes met mine.
“Something your parents never wanted you to know.””
A cold feeling spread through me.
“No.””
“Emma—”
“No.””
I stood up.
“My parents love Rosie.””
“I know.””
“They would never hide something from us.””
Ben looked at me sadly.
“I used to believe that too.””
My heart started racing.
I looked toward the operating room.
My sister was fighting for her life behind those doors.
And suddenly, I wasn’t just afraid of losing her.
I was afraid of what she had discovered before she went into surgery.
“Where is the rest of the letter?””
Ben’s face changed.
“What?””
“This isn’t all of it.””
He looked down.
I noticed something immediately.
The page in my hand ended halfway through a sentence.
The bottom was torn.
“Ben.””
He went quiet.
“Where is the rest?””
He didn’t answer.
That scared me more than anything.
“Ben, where is the rest of my sister’s letter?””
His eyes filled with tears again.
“Rosie didn’t give me the whole thing.””
“Why?””
He looked toward the operating room.
“Because she told me someone else had it.””
I felt my blood run cold.
“Who?””
Ben slowly reached into his pocket again.
This time, he pulled out a small envelope.
It was sealed.
My name was written across the front.
But the handwriting wasn’t Rosie’s.
I knew that handwriting.
I had seen it thousands of times.
It belonged to my mother.
May you like
And underneath my name were six words that made my heart stop.
*Open only after Rosie tells you.*
