Chapter 8: The Choice Claire Made After Lily Was Born

I waited until Lily went to sleep before I confronted Claire.

I knew I could not do it in front of her.

Children always sensed more than adults realized.

They noticed the change in voices.

The longer pauses.

The way people avoided certain words.

The way smiles became something people had to force.

Lily deserved better than that.

She deserved a childhood untouched by the secrets of adults.

But I needed answers.

And this time, I was not going to let Claire hide behind fear.

When she arrived that evening, she immediately knew something was wrong.

“What happened?””

I looked at her.

“Jason came here.””

Her face changed.

“What?””

“He asked to see Lily.””

Claire went pale.

“Did you let him?””

“No.””

She closed her eyes.

“Good.””

The answer surprised me.

“You don’t want him to see her?””

Claire looked away.

“I don’t know what I want anymore.””

“That’s not good enough.””

She looked back at me.

“What?””

I took a breath.

“Jason told me something.””

Her expression tightened.

“What did he say?””

“He said the truth about Lily isn’t the secret you’ve been hiding.””

Claire became completely still.

Then she whispered:

“He knows.””

“Knows what?””

She didn’t answer.

“Claire.””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I was hoping I could tell you differently.””

My chest tightened.

“Tell me what?””

She sat down slowly.

“After Lily was born, Daniel wanted to be involved.””

I stared at her.

“But you said he disappeared.””

“He did.””

“Those two things can both be true.””

Claire nodded.

“He wanted to be there. But I pushed him away.””

“Why?””

She looked at her hands.

“Because I was angry.””

“At Daniel?””

“At everyone.””

Her voice cracked.

“I was twenty-two. I had a baby. Jason was gone. My life wasn’t what I thought it would be.””

“Claire.””

“I felt trapped.””

The honesty hurt.

But I let her continue.

“Daniel came to the hospital after Lily was born.””

I froze.

“You saw him?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

“He asked to hold her.””

“What did you say?””

Claire covered her face.

“I said no.””

The room went quiet.

“Why?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“That if Lily bonded with him, I would lose control.””

I stared at her.

“Control?””

Claire looked ashamed.

“I know how terrible it sounds.””

“It sounds like you made a choice.””

She nodded.

“I did.””

“What choice?””

She swallowed.

“I chose to keep Lily away from him.””

I felt a deep sadness.

Not anger.

Something worse.

Disappointment.

“Why would you do that?””

“Because I thought Daniel would leave.””

“But he was trying to stay.””

“I didn’t know that.””

“You didn’t ask.””

She looked down.

“No.””

I walked to the window.

Outside, the neighborhood was quiet.

Families were eating dinner.

Children were doing homework.

Normal things.

But inside this house, everything had changed.

“Did Daniel know you were keeping him away?””

“Yes.””

“What did he do?””

“He fought.””

I turned.

“He fought?””

Claire nodded.

“He called. He sent messages. He asked to see Lily.””

“And you refused?””

She started crying.

“Yes.””

“How long?””

“Months.””

I closed my eyes.

“Claire.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice shook.

“You let Lily grow up without her father.””

“I know.””

“You let him believe he had no place in her life.””

“I know.””

“Why?””

She whispered:

“Because I was afraid he would take her.””

There it was.

The truth.

The same fear that had brought her back years later.

The same fear that had made her fight me.

Claire had always been afraid of losing Lily.

But in trying to protect herself from losing her…

She had pushed everyone away.

“Did Daniel ever forgive you?””

Claire shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

“What happened?””

“He stopped fighting.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because he got sick.””

The room became silent.

“He found out he had cancer.””

I looked at her.

“He died?””

Claire nodded.

“Before he died, he wrote Lily the letter.””

The letter.

The one Jason had.

“What did the letter say?””

“I don’t know.””

“You never read it?””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because Daniel’s lawyer sent it after his death.””

She looked toward the hallway.

“By then, I couldn’t face what I had done.””

My anger softened.

Not disappeared.

But softened.

Because guilt had been eating my daughter alive.

“You hid it.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“That Lily would know.””

I stared at her.

“Know what?””

“That her mother kept her from someone who loved her.””

The truth sat between us.

Heavy.

Painful.

Human.

Before I could respond, Claire’s phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Her face changed.

“Who is it?””

She didn’t answer.

“Claire.””

She handed me the phone.

The message was from an unknown number.

There was a photograph attached.

I opened it.

My heart stopped.

It was Lily.

A picture of her at school.

Taken from a distance.

My hands went cold.

“Who sent this?””

Claire grabbed the phone.

Under the picture was a message.

You need to stop fighting. You don’t know what Daniel left behind.

Claire’s face turned white.

“Jason.””

I immediately called the police.

Not because I knew if anything illegal had happened.

But because someone was watching my granddaughter.

And I refused to ignore that.

Later that night, after the police took the information, Claire sat beside me.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

“For what?””

“For all of it.””

She stared at the floor.

“I thought I could fix my mistakes by taking Lily back.””

“And now?””

“Now I realize I was just making another mistake.””

For the first time in years, I saw Claire without defenses.

No excuses.

No anger.

Just regret.

“I don’t want to lose her.””

I looked toward Lily’s room.

“You might not.””

“But?””

“You have to stop fighting for the wrong reason.””

She looked at me.

“What do you mean?””

“If you’re fighting because you love Lily, that’s one thing.””

She nodded.

“But if you’re fighting because you’re trying to prove you’re not the mother who left…”

Claire looked down.

“That’s different.””

“Yes.””

The next morning, Anna called.

Her voice was urgent.

“Margaret, you need to meet me.””

“Why?””

“Because I found Daniel’s lawyer.””

My heart raced.

“Does he have the letter?””

“Yes.””

“Where is he?””

Anna hesitated.

“He won’t give it to anyone.””

“Why?””

“Because Daniel left instructions.””

“What instructions?””

Anna took a breath.

“He said the letter should only be opened when all three people connected to Lily were present.””

I frowned.

“All three?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

“Claire.””

“Me?””

“And Jason.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Why Jason?””

Anna’s voice became quiet.

“Because Daniel knew Jason would eventually come back.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It will.””

“When?””

“Tomorrow.””

“Why tomorrow?””

A pause.

Then Anna said:

“Because the lawyer has agreed to release the letter.””

I exhaled.

“Where?””

“At the Carter family estate.””

I froze.

The Carter family estate.

The house where Thomas grew up.

The place I had not visited since his funeral.

“Why there?””

Anna answered:

“Because Daniel’s letter wasn’t just about Lily.””

“What else was it about?””

Silence.

Then:

“It was about Thomas.””

My heart sank.

“What does Thomas have to do with this?””

Anna’s voice became almost a whisper.

“Everything.””

The next day, we arrived at the old estate.

Claire sat beside me.

Neither of us spoke.

Jason was already there.

When he saw us, his expression changed.

Not anger.

Not confidence.

Fear.

The lawyer walked out carrying a small box.

He looked at each of us.

“Before I give you this letter, I need you all to understand something.””

Nobody moved.

“This letter was written by Daniel Whitmore six years ago.””

He opened the box.

Inside was a sealed envelope.

“He wanted the truth revealed only when the people who shaped Lily’s life were all present.””

His eyes moved between Claire, Jason, and me.

“Because he believed everyone involved had a part in what happened.””

The lawyer handed me the envelope.

My fingers trembled.

Then he said:

“But before you open it, there is one thing you should know.””

I looked up.

“What?””

The lawyer’s expression was serious.

“Daniel did not write this letter because he wanted revenge.””

A pause.

“He wrote it because he discovered who really caused Lily to be separated from her father.””

Claire stopped breathing.

Jason looked away.

And I knew.

The truth we had been chasing was finally inside that envelope.

I opened it.

The first line was written in Daniel’s handwriting.

Margaret, Claire, and Jason…

If you are reading this, then the secret I carried is no longer mine.

I continued.

And the next sentence made my entire body go cold.

The reason Lily was taken from me was not because Claire was afraid.

It was because someone convinced her that I was dangerous.

Someone who had been controlling this story from the beginning.

Someone who wanted Lily’s inheritance.

Someone who wanted Thomas Carter’s bloodline hidden forever.

I looked up.

Slowly.

May you like

Because suddenly, everyone in the room was looking at one person.

Jason.
