Chapter 6: The Woman Who Knew My Husband’s Secret
I didn’t know what to say.
For years, I had imagined the moment someone would tell me something that changed my understanding of Thomas.
I imagined anger.
I imagined betrayal.
I imagined grief.
But I never imagined hearing a stranger’s voice through my phone saying she was my husband’s daughter.
The words didn’t feel real.
They floated somewhere outside of me.
Like I was watching someone else’s life fall apart.
“Margaret?””
The woman’s voice brought me back.
“I’m here.””
“I’m sorry to call you like this.””
I looked at Claire.
She was standing across the kitchen, pale and frozen.
“Who gave you my number?””
“Jason Reed.””
My stomach tightened.
“Jason?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
A pause.
Then the woman answered:
“Because he found me before he found you.””
I sat down slowly.
“Who are you?””
“My name is Anna Whitmore.””
The name meant nothing to me.
But the connection did.
“You said you’re Thomas’s daughter.””
“Yes.””
“How old are you?””
“Forty-six.””
I closed my eyes.
Forty-six.
A lifetime.
A person who had existed for decades without me knowing.
A person my husband had known.
A person my daughter had never met.
“How long have you known about us?””
Anna sighed.
“About you? Only recently.””
“And Thomas?””
Silence.
Then:
“I knew my father.””
The pain in her voice surprised me.
Not anger.
Not bitterness.
Pain.
“He visited me when I was young.””
I looked at Claire.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“He told me about you,” Anna continued.
“What did he say?””
“That you were the kindest person he had ever met.””
My throat tightened.
“Then why didn’t he tell me?””
Anna was quiet for a moment.
“Because he was ashamed.””
I looked down at the letter on the table.
The same answer.
The same wound.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
I stood up.
“No.””
My voice came out stronger than I expected.
“No, you don’t get to explain him to me.””
Anna went silent.
I took a breath.
“I loved him for thirty years.””
“I know.””
“You knew him for part of that time.””
“I know.””
“You don’t know what we had.””
“No.””
Her voice softened.
“But I know what he lost.””
That sentence hurt.
Because it wasn’t an accusation.
It was sadness.
“Tell me everything.””
Anna was quiet.
Then she said:
“Your husband had another family before you.””
I closed my eyes.
“I know that now.””
“No, Margaret.””
Her voice became serious.
“You know he had me.””
A pause.
“You don’t know what happened after.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“What happened?””
“After my mother died, Thomas tried to bring me into his life.””
I looked at Claire.
“But he didn’t?””
“No.””
“Why?””
Anna hesitated.
“Because someone stopped him.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Who?””
“Your father-in-law.””
I froze.
“What?””
“My grandfather told Thomas that if he brought me into your marriage, he would destroy everything.””
I sat down.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It does if you know the kind of man he was.””
I remembered Thomas’s father.
Richard Carter.
A strict man.
Cold.
A man who believed appearances mattered more than feelings.
But this?
“This is impossible.””
“I thought so too.””
Anna’s voice shook.
“Until I found the documents.””
“What documents?””
“Records from when I was a child.””
I looked at Claire.
“What does this have to do with Lily?””
Anna became quiet.
Then:
“Everything.””
The word made my heart race.
“Explain.””
“When Thomas died, I spent years trying to understand why he kept secrets.””
“And?””
“I found letters.””
“The same letters?””
“Yes.””
“But why would Jason know?””
“Because Jason found a connection.””
“What connection?””
Anna took a breath.
“The man who raised me wasn’t my biological father.””
I froze.
“What?””
“My mother was pregnant when she met him.””
The room became silent.
“Anna…”
“My biological father was Thomas.””
I sat there, trying to process the impossible.
But then Anna continued.
“And the same thing happened with Lily.””
I felt cold.
“What do you mean?””
“The man who raised Lily wasn’t her biological father either.””
I looked toward the hallway.
Where Lily slept.
Where a little girl existed without knowing adults were rewriting her entire history.
“Who is?””
Anna’s answer came slowly.
“Someone connected to my family.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“I found records from the hospital where Lily was born.””
“How?””
“Jason gave them to me.””
“Why would he give you anything?””
“Because he wanted the truth.””
I shook my head.
“This is too much.””
“I know.””
“Who is Lily’s father?””
Anna was silent.
Then she said:
“His name is Daniel Whitmore.””
The room went completely still.
Claire covered her mouth.
I looked at her.
She looked like she had seen a ghost.
“Daniel?””
Anna heard the reaction.
“You know that name.””
Claire slowly sat down.
“Yes.””
Her voice was barely audible.
“He was the man before Jason.””
Anna sighed.
“That’s what Jason discovered.””
I looked at Claire.
My daughter looked broken.
“Claire?””
She didn’t answer.
“Tell me.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Daniel wasn’t just someone I dated.””
The silence was unbearable.
“What does that mean?””
She whispered:
“He was Anna’s son.””
I felt the blood leave my face.
“No.””
Claire nodded.
“Yes.””
I stared at her.
The family tree in my mind collapsed.
Thomas.
Anna.
Daniel.
Lily.
Everything was connected.
Everything had been hidden.
“Explain this,” I said.
Claire wiped her tears.
“When I met Daniel, I didn’t know.””
“Didn’t know what?””
“That he was related to Dad.””
Anna answered quietly:
“He didn’t know either.””
I looked at the phone.
“So Lily’s father…”
“Is Daniel.””
My knees felt weak.
The truth was finally appearing.
But instead of bringing peace, it created more questions.
“Why didn’t anyone know?””
Claire closed her eyes.
“Because I found out after Lily was born.””
“What?””
She looked at me.
“When Daniel disappeared from my life, I thought he abandoned me.””
“But?””
“But later I discovered his last name.””
She shook her head.
“I searched.””
“And?””
“I found out he was connected to Dad.””
I stared at her.
“You knew?””
“I suspected.””
“Claire.””
“I was terrified.””
Her voice broke.
“Do you understand what that meant? Lily wasn’t just my daughter. She was connected to Dad’s hidden family.””
I looked at Anna.
“And you?””
“I didn’t know about Lily until Jason contacted me.””
“Why?””
“Because Daniel died.””
The room went silent again.
“When?””
“Six years ago.””
I closed my eyes.
Another person gone.
Another secret left behind.
Anna continued:
“Before he died, Daniel was trying to find Claire.””
Claire looked up.
“Why?””
“Because he knew about Lily.””
My daughter’s face changed.
“What?””
“He wanted to tell you the truth.””
Claire whispered:
“He never contacted me.””
“Because he never got the chance.””
I felt a terrible sadness.
So many people had been carrying pieces of this story.
And nobody had put them together.
Nobody had chosen honesty.
“Then why did Jason leave?””
Anna answered:
“Because he realized Lily wasn’t his daughter.””
I looked at Claire.
“And now?””
Claire looked terrified.
“Now he wants custody anyway.””
My heart sank.
“Why?””
Anna’s voice became serious.
“Because Jason found out something else.””
“What?””
A pause.
Then:
“He found out Daniel left behind something for Lily.””
I frowned.
“What kind of something?””
Anna hesitated.
“An inheritance.””
Claire went pale.
“How much?””
Anna answered:
“Enough to change anyone’s life.””
The room felt colder.
Because suddenly, I understood.
Jason’s sudden interest.
The custody papers.
The urgency.
The fight to bring Lily home.
It might not have been about being a father.
It might have been about something else.
“Anna,” I said quietly.
“What?””
“Does Jason know about the inheritance?””
“Yes.””
“And does Claire?””
Anna was silent.
Then:
“She does now.””
I looked at my daughter.
She looked away.
And that was when I knew.
There was one more secret.
One more thing Claire had not told me.
“Claire.””
She didn’t answer.
“Look at me.””
Slowly, she did.
“Is there something else?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I didn’t know about the money.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
Her face crumpled.
“Mom…”
“What aren’t you telling me?””
Claire looked down.
Then whispered:
“Daniel didn’t just leave Lily an inheritance.””
I waited.
“He left her a letter.””
My heart pounded.
“What did it say?””
Claire’s voice shook.
“I don’t know.””
“Why?””
“Because Jason has it.””
The room went silent.
Anna suddenly spoke.
“Margaret?””
“Yes?””
Her voice became urgent.
“You need to find that letter before Jason does something you can’t undo.””
I gripped the phone.
“What are you talking about?””
Anna took a breath.
Then said:
“Because Daniel’s letter explains why Lily was never supposed to be raised by Jason…”
May you like
A pause.
“And why Claire left her with you.””
