Chapter 8: The Truth That Changed Everything
I couldn’t move.
I just stared at the papers in my hands.
Marcus’s name appeared again and again.
Accounts.
Payments.
Transfers.
My eyes moved across the pages, trying to understand what I was looking at.
“What is this?””
Robert stepped inside quietly.
“It’s proof.””
My mother sat down.
She looked exhausted.
Like she had spent years trying to forget this moment would come.
“Mom?””
She covered her face.
“I didn’t know.””
I looked at her.
“You didn’t know what?””
Robert answered.
“Marcus was moving money around without her knowledge.””
My chest tightened.
“What money?””
Robert looked at my mother.
“Your inheritance.””
The room went completely silent.
I turned toward my mother.
“My what?””
She looked away.
“Your grandfather left something for you.””
I blinked.
“What are you talking about?””
My mother took a shaky breath.
“Before he passed away, he created a savings account for you.””
I stared at her.
“How much?””
She didn’t answer.
Robert did.
“Almost eighty thousand dollars.””
I stepped back.
“What?””
“That money was meant for your education.””
I looked at the documents again.
“And Marcus?””
Robert’s expression became serious.
“He convinced your mother to move the account.””
My mother immediately shook her head.
“No. He said it was temporary.””
Robert nodded.
“That’s what he told her.””
I felt anger rising.
“So he stole from me?””
My mother looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
Those two words broke something inside me.
Because I knew she meant them.
Not like before.
Not as an apology to end an argument.
A real apology.
“I didn’t know.””
I looked at her.
“Mom, how could you not know?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“Because I trusted him.””
The room became quiet.
Then Robert spoke.
“Your father found out six years ago.””
I looked at him.
“What happened?””
“He confronted Marcus.””
“And?””
Robert looked at my mother.
“Your father gave her a choice.””
I swallowed.
“What choice?””
“He told her to leave with him and Daniel.””
I felt my heart sink.
“He wanted to take me?””
My mother nodded.
“He said he couldn’t watch Marcus destroy our family.””
I looked down.
“And you stayed.””
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The answer was painful.
But honest.
“Why?””
My mother’s voice was barely a whisper.
“Because Marcus convinced me your father was trying to control me.””
She wiped her tears.
“I thought I was choosing love.””
Nobody spoke.
Then my phone rang.
I looked down.
Unknown number.
Again.
My mother saw it.
“Don’t answer.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
She looked terrified.
“Because I think I know who it is.””
The phone kept ringing.
I answered anyway.
“Hello?””
Silence.
Then Marcus’s voice.
“You found Robert.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“How do you know?””
A pause.
Then a quiet laugh.
“Because I knew this day would come.””
I stood up.
“Where are you?””
“I’m giving you a chance.””
“A chance?””
“To stop destroying your mother’s life.””
I almost laughed.
“You mean stop exposing yours.””
His voice changed.
“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.””
I looked at the documents.
“I know exactly what I’m dealing with.””
“No.””
His voice became colder.
“You know what everyone wants you to believe.””
I glanced at my mother.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus was silent for a moment.
Then he said:
“Ask your mother why she never told you what happened the night your father left.””
My eyes moved toward her.
She immediately looked away.
My heart started racing.
“Mom?””
No answer.
Marcus continued.
“Ask her who your father was really protecting you from.””
The call ended.
I slowly lowered the phone.
My mother was crying.
“Mom…”
She looked at me.
And the fear in her eyes was worse than anything I had seen before.
Because for the first time, I realized there was still one secret left.
A secret even Marcus was afraid to reveal.
My mother whispered:
“Your father didn’t leave because of Marcus.””
May you like
She took a shaky breath.
“He left because of me.””
