Chapter 3: The Picture I Was Never Supposed To See

I stared at the photograph in my mother’s hand, waiting for my eyes to make sense of what I was seeing.

It was old.

The edges were worn.

The colors had faded.

But the people in it were clear.

Marcus was standing beside a woman I recognized immediately.

My stomach dropped.

Because that woman was my mother’s best friend, Carla.

The same Carla who used to come over for Sunday dinners.

The same Carla who hugged me after my father left.

The same Carla who always told my mother, “You deserve someone who treats you better.””

I looked at my mother.

Then back at the picture.

“Why is Carla standing with him?””

My mother’s lips parted, but no words came out.

She sat down slowly.

“I didn’t want you finding out like this.””

I felt my heartbeat getting louder.

“Finding out what?””

She looked at the floor.

“Marcus knew Carla before he knew me.””

I shook my head.

“That doesn’t explain anything.””

My mother took a deep breath.

“Carla introduced us.””

The room went silent.

I placed the photo on the table.

“She introduced you to him?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

My mother rubbed her hands together nervously.

“Because she thought we would be good together.””

I stared at her.

“That makes no sense.””

“It didn’t at the time either.””

I leaned back.

“Mom, what are you not telling me?””

She looked toward the hallway.

Like she was afraid Marcus might hear.

Then she lowered her voice.

“Carla and Marcus were together before.””

The words hit me harder than I expected.

I blinked.

“What?””

“They dated for a few months.””

I stood up.

“And then you started dating him?””

My mother looked ashamed.

“It wasn’t like that.””

“Then what was it like?””

She didn’t answer.

That silence made me angry.

“Mom.””

She finally looked at me.

“Carla ended things with him.””

“Why?””

My mother hesitated.

“Because she said he wasn’t the person he pretended to be.””

I felt a cold feeling in my chest.

“What does that mean?””

Before my mother could respond, the front door opened.

Marcus walked in.

His eyes immediately moved from me to the photograph on the table.

His expression changed.

Not confusion.

Not surprise.

Fear.

“You showed him?””

My mother stood quickly.

“Marcus…”

“No.””

His voice was low.

“You actually showed him?””

I looked between them.

“Why are you acting like this is a secret?””

Marcus looked at me.

“Because it’s not your business.””

I almost laughed.

There it was again.

The same sentence.

The same excuse.

But this time, I wasn’t letting it go.

“It became my business when I started paying for your life.””

His jaw tightened.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””

“Then explain.””

He looked at my mother.

Not me.

That told me everything.

My mother stepped forward.

“Marcus, just tell him.””

He stared at her.

“You want me to tell him?””

The way he said it made my mother’s face lose color.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus shook his head.

“You never told him the whole story either.””

My chest tightened.

“What whole story?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at my mother.

“Mom?””

She sat back down.

And for the first time, I saw something I had never seen before.

Fear.

Not anger.

Not frustration.

Fear.

“Your father didn’t leave because he wanted to,” she whispered.

I froze.

“What?””

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

My mother covered her mouth.

“I should have told you years ago.””

I stepped closer.

“What does Dad have to do with Marcus?””

She looked at the photograph.

Then at me.

“Your father knew him.””

The room felt smaller.

“What are you saying?””

My mother’s eyes filled with tears.

“Marcus wasn’t a stranger who came into my life.””

She paused.

“He was someone your father warned me about.””

I looked at Marcus.

His face had gone completely still.

“Why?””

My mother whispered the words that changed everything.

“Because your father said Marcus had a history of using people.””

Marcus immediately shook his head.

“That’s a lie.””

But he said it too quickly.

Too defensively.

I looked at him.

“Did my father know you before you met my mom?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

And that was the first time I saw him lose control.

Because he always had an answer.

Always had something clever to say.

But now?

Nothing.

I picked up the photograph.

“Who is the other person in this story?””

My mother looked at me.

“What?””

“You said my father knew him. Carla knew him. Now I know there’s more.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Stop digging into things you don’t understand.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

My voice was calm.

“Not anymore.””

I placed the photograph back on the table.

“I spent months wondering why my own mother was choosing you over me.””

Marcus’s expression hardened.

“And what did you find?””

I looked directly at him.

“That maybe I was never the problem.””

The room went silent.

Then my mother’s phone started ringing.

She looked down at the screen.

Her face changed instantly.

I noticed.

Marcus noticed too.

“Who is it?”” he asked.

My mother didn’t answer.

She just stared at the name.

May you like

Then she whispered:

“It’s Carla.””
