CHAPTER 1

I called Vanessa immediately.
Marcus tried to stop me.
I didn't listen.
She answered after one ring.
“So you opened the box.”
“How did you know?”
A soft laugh.
“Claire was predictable.”
My hand tightened around the phone.
“Did you know Lily was my daughter?”
Silence.
Then:
“Yes.”
The word struck harder than anything I expected.
“How long?”
“Almost four years.”
I couldn't breathe.
“You knew from the beginning?”
“I knew before Lily was born.”
Marcus was signaling for me to put the call on speaker and let Agent Chen record it.
I did.
Vanessa continued.
“Claire called you the night she found out she was pregnant.”
“She never told me.”
“She called your old number.”
I remembered.
I had changed phones during our separation.
Vanessa had access to the old device because it was still on our shared account.
“You intercepted the call.”
“She left a voicemail.”
My vision narrowed.
“What did it say?”
“That she needed to talk to you. That it was about the night after Michael's funeral.”
I gripped the edge of the table.
“You deleted it.”
“Yes.”
Marcus looked stunned.
Even Agent Chen's expression hardened.
“You stole four years from me.”
“Claire stole them.”
“You deleted the message.”
“She chose silence afterward.”
“You knew.”
“I suspected. Then I confirmed it.”
“How?”
“I got a DNA sample.”
My blood went cold.
“From Lily?”
“From you and Lily.”
“When?”
“Does it matter?”
“Yes!”
I heard her breathe.
Then she said, “At Claire's house. Lily had a cup. You had left a razor in the guest bathroom.”
My stomach turned.
“You secretly tested us.”
“I needed to know.”
“And then what?”
“I protected my marriage.”
The sheer selfishness of it stunned me.
“You protected yourself.”
“What was I supposed to do, Daniel? Smile while my husband discovered he'd fathered a child with his best friend?”
I closed my eyes.
Claire and I had crossed a line during one terrible night when grief and loneliness had stripped us down to nothing.
It had happened while Vanessa and I were legally separated.
But hearing Lily reduced to evidence of betrayal made me sick.
“You hurt my daughter.”
Vanessa went quiet.
Then she said, “There it is.”
“What?”
“Your daughter.”
Her voice was bitter.
“Not Claire's daughter. Not the child you promised to help. Your daughter.”
“You hurt Noah too.”
“He got in the way.”
Agent Chen's eyes sharpened.
I stared at the phone.
“You slapped a twelve-year-old because he protected his sister.”
“He pushed me.”
“You had Lily by the hair.”
“She took something from my office.”
“What?”
Silence.
“The key?”
Another silence.
“Vanessa.”
She hung up.
Agent Chen immediately preserved the recording.
“That was useful.”
“Useful?”
“For prosecution.”
I stared at the dead phone.
“My wife knew I had a child and hid her from me for four years.”
Marcus sat beside me.
“You'll need a DNA test through proper legal channels.”
“I know.”
“But Claire's statement, Vanessa's admission, and a test will establish paternity.”
“What about Noah?”
His question was unnecessary.
He knew exactly what I was asking.
“If you petition to become his permanent guardian, the court will consider his best interest.”
“I won't separate them.”
“You don't have to.”
I looked at Claire's letter again.
They are one another's home.
I drove back to the secure apartment after midnight.
Noah was waiting.
Of course he was.
He sat on the couch under a blanket.
“Did you find stuff?”
“Yes.”
“About Dad?”
“Yes.”
“Bad?”
“Yes.”
He stared down.
“Was Dad murdered?”
I sat beside him.
“We don't know legally yet.”
“But?”
“But there's evidence that his death may have been intentional.”
He nodded as if he had expected it.
Then he looked toward the bedroom where Lily slept.
“Was there something about her?”
My chest tightened.
Claire had said Lily deserved the truth someday.
I had assumed someday meant years.
But Noah had lived inside secrets long enough.
“There was.”
He waited.
I swallowed.
“Claire believed I'm Lily's biological father.”
Noah didn't move.
For several seconds, he simply stared.
Then he said, “What?”
“I'll take a DNA test. But Claire wrote that I'm her father.”
His face went through shock.
Confusion.
Then something I couldn't read.
“She knew?”
“Yes.”
“You didn't?”
“No.”
“Vanessa?”
I hesitated.
“She knew.”
Noah stood.
His whole body shook.
“She knew?”
“Yes.”
“And she hurt Lily?”
I stood too.
“Noah—”
“She knew Lily was your kid and she still—”
His voice broke.
He grabbed a pillow and threw it across the room.
Then another.
“Why does everyone lie?”
I let him.
“Why does everyone get to decide things for us?”
“I don't know.”
“Mom lied!”
“Yes.”
“Vanessa lied!”
“Yes.”
“You didn't even know!”
“No.”
He turned on me.
“So now Lily is really yours.”
I knew exactly where this was going.
“Noah.”
“And I'm not.”
“There is no ‘and.’”
“Yes, there is!”
He backed away.
“You're her dad.”
“I want to be yours too.”
“You can't.”
“I can be your guardian.”
“That's not the same!”
His face crumpled.
“Lily gets you for real.”
I moved toward him.
He stepped back.
“Don't.”
So I stopped.
He wiped his face angrily.
“When people find out, they'll say you should keep her and send me somewhere else.”
“No.”
“They will.”
“I don't care what they say.”
“You don't know!”
His voice cracked.
“Everybody leaves.”
That sentence silenced me.
His father had died.
His mother had died.
Vanessa had threatened him with separation.
And now biology had handed Lily something Noah feared he could never have.
A guaranteed claim.
I sat on the floor.
Not beside him.
Just near him.
“I can't prove tonight what the rest of our lives will look like.”
He looked at me.
“But I can tell you what I choose.”
He said nothing.
“I choose both of you.”
Tears rolled down his face.
“You don't have to.”
“I know.”
“Lily's your real kid.”
“So?”
He stared at me.
“So people care more about real kids.”
My throat closed.
“Noah, listen to me carefully.”
I pressed my palm against my chest.
“DNA may explain why Lily has my blood. It does not decide who I love.”
His lips trembled.
“You stood in front of her when you were terrified. You carried her grief while you were carrying your own. You protected my daughter when I didn't even know she was mine.”
I could barely speak.
“If you think that makes you less my family, you are wrong.”
He started crying.
I opened my arms but didn't move.
He chose.
He came to me.
I held him tightly.
After a minute, a small sleepy voice came from the hallway.
“Why Noah crying?”
We turned.
Lily stood there in pajamas, holding her stuffed rabbit.
She walked over and climbed directly into my lap.
Then she touched Noah's wet cheek.
“No sad.”
Noah laughed through tears.
She looked at me.
“Daniel sad too?”
“A little.”
She hugged both of us.
And as I held them, I knew Claire's request no longer frightened me.
I would not choose Lily instead of Noah.
I would choose them together.
The next morning, however, Agent Chen called.
The forensic team had decrypted the first drive.
Michael's files were there.
So was a video.
In it, Richard Vale sat across from Vanessa in his office.
The timestamp was three days before Michael Bennett died.
May you like
And Vanessa said clearly:
“If Michael goes to the authorities, Daniel will eventually find out too. Handle Michael. I'll handle Daniel.”
