CHAPTER 11

I don't remember dropping the phone.
I remember Noah catching it.
I remember Agent Chen shouting orders.
I remember one thought repeating so violently inside my skull that nothing else existed.
Lily.
My daughter.
Richard had her.
Noah stared at the video.
His face changed into something I had seen before.
The night Vanessa grabbed Lily.
He became the soldier Claire had warned me about.
“We go get her.”
“No.”
He turned on me.
“What?”
“You're staying with Agent Chen.”
“No!”
“Noah.”
“You said we don't leave her!”
“We aren't leaving her.”
“Then I'm coming.”
I gripped his shoulders.
“Listen to me.”
His eyes burned with terror.
“He took her.”
“I know.”
“She'll be scared.”
“I know.”
“She needs me.”
“So do I.”
That stopped him.
My voice broke.
“I need you safe.”
He shook his head.
“You don't understand.”
“I do.”
“No, you don't!”
His tears finally came.
“When Mom was sick, Lily woke up every night and asked if she was going to die. I told her no even when I knew maybe she would.”
I couldn't breathe.
“I promised her I'd always stay.”
I pulled him against me.
“You did enough.”
He sobbed into my chest.
“You did enough, Noah.”
I held the back of his head.
“Let me do this part.”
Priya had been found unconscious in the apartment parking garage.
Alive.
A security guard had been assaulted.
Grace had stepped away ten minutes earlier to take a call.
Richard's people had watched us long enough to know the routine.
Agent Chen took control.
“We do not make an uncontrolled exchange.”
“I don't care about the evidence.”
“You should.”
“I care about Lily.”
“So do I. And if Richard gets the only evidence connecting him to multiple felonies, Lily may remain a target afterward.”
“He said bring it.”
“We'll bring something.”
Within an hour, agents created copies of selected documents and placed them inside a case.
The originals went into federal custody.
Richard sent coordinates.
An unfinished Vale Development site near the river.
Of course.
One of his own abandoned projects.
I wore a transmitter.
Agents surrounded the area beyond sight.
Noah stayed in an armored command vehicle with Marcus despite my objections.
Agent Chen argued he would be safer there than moved again.
I walked into the construction site alone.
Every step felt impossible.
Then I heard Lily crying.
“Daddy Daniel!”
My heart stopped.
Richard stood forty feet away.
Gerald Pike held Lily beside him.
Her hands were tied loosely in front.
She was crying.
But alive.
I nearly collapsed from relief.
“Let her go.”
Richard looked older than he had days earlier.
No suit.
No polished smile.
Just a desperate man in an expensive coat.
“The case.”
I lifted it.
“First Lily.”
“No.”
“You think I trust you?”
He laughed.
“Trust stopped mattering several deaths ago.”
The words hung between us.
I stared.
“Several?”
He realized it.
Too late.
“You killed Michael.”
“I solved a problem.”
My blood roared.
“And Claire?”
His expression changed.
“Claire created her own problems.”
“You poisoned her?”
“Don't be dramatic.”
“You tampered with her medication.”
“I said don't be dramatic.”
That was not a denial.
Agent Chen was hearing everything.
“Vanessa helped you.”
Richard smiled faintly.
“My daughter understood loyalty before you taught her weakness.”
I wanted to kill him.
It frightened me how much I wanted it.
Then Lily whimpered.
“Daddy.”
That word brought me back.
I looked at her.
Not Richard.
Her.
“I'm here.”
“Want Noah.”
“He's safe.”
“Want home.”
“I know.”
Richard held out his hand.
“The case.”
I placed it on the ground and kicked it toward him.
Pike picked it up.
Opened it.
He flipped through the papers.
Richard looked satisfied.
Then Pike said, “These are copies.”
Richard's face changed.
He looked at me.
“You think you're clever?”
“No.”
I stared at Lily.
“I think she's worth more than anything you can threaten me with.”
Richard pulled a gun.
Agents shouted through hidden speakers.
“Federal agents! Drop the weapon!”
Chaos erupted.
Pike released Lily and ran.
She screamed.
I ran toward her.
Richard fired.
The bullet struck concrete.
I threw myself over Lily.
Another shot.
Then several agents fired back.
Richard dropped.
I covered Lily's head with my body.
“Don't look.”
She screamed into my chest.
“Daddy!”
“I've got you.”
Agents swarmed us.
Someone cut the ties from her wrists.
I held her so tightly she complained.
“Ow.”
I loosened my arms immediately.
“Sorry.”
She wrapped herself around my neck anyway.
Agent Chen approached.
“Richard's alive.”
I didn't care.
“Pike?”
“In custody.”
I stood with Lily in my arms.
Then I saw Noah.
He had escaped the command vehicle.
Marcus ran behind him.
“Noah!”
Lily heard.
Her whole body jolted.
“Noah!”
I put her down.
She ran.
He dropped to his knees.
She slammed into him.
They both fell onto the dusty concrete.
Noah wrapped his arms around her.
“You okay?”
She cried into his shoulder.
“You leave.”
“I know.”
“You leave me.”
His face shattered.
“I know. I'm sorry.”
She hit his chest with one tiny fist.
Then hugged him tighter.
I dropped beside them.
Noah looked at me.
“You got her.”
“We got her.”
He shook his head.
“No. You.”
I put one hand behind his neck.
“Come here.”
The three of us held each other on the floor of an unfinished building while federal agents arrested the men who had terrorized our family.
Richard was carried past us on a stretcher.
His eyes opened.
He saw me.
Then Lily.
For the first time, he looked powerless.
Agent Chen stopped beside him.
“Richard Vale, you are under arrest for kidnapping, conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and multiple additional federal offenses.”
His face tightened.
Then Noah stood.
I almost stopped him.
But he only looked at Richard.
“My dad wasn't a problem.”
Richard stared.
“He was better than you.”
Then Noah turned away.
I saw something leave his shoulders.
Not all the pain.
Maybe not even most of it.
But something.
That night, Lily slept between Noah and me in a guarded hospital room.
She had no serious injuries.
Only bruises.
I stayed awake watching both children breathe.
At three in the morning, Lily opened her eyes.
“Daddy Daniel?”
“Yes.”
“No go.”
“I won't.”
She closed her eyes again.
Her hand remained wrapped around my finger.
And for the first time since Claire died, I understood exactly what she had meant.
Evidence second.
May you like
Justice third.
Protect them first.
