CHAPTER 6

The first gunshot shattered a window.

Glass exploded across the church floor.

Marcus dropped behind a pew.

Evan pulled me down.

Calvin fired toward the doorway.

“Back exit!”

I crawled after him.

Another shot hit wood above us.

There were no movie heroics.

No dramatic bravery.

Only noise, splinters, fear, and the primitive certainty that I had to survive because two children were waiting for me.

Calvin reached the sacristy.

A side door stood ten feet away.

Then he stopped.

A red stain spread across his shoulder.

“I'm hit.”

Evan grabbed him.

“We move.”

Together, we dragged him through the doorway.

Marcus was behind us.

We ran across wet grass toward the tree line.

A man shouted from the church.

Evan pushed us behind an old stone wall.

“Car's on the other side.”

Calvin was losing blood fast.

I pressed my jacket against the wound.

He grabbed my wrist.

“Locker.”

“We'll get it.”

“No.”

His eyes were unfocused.

“Listen.”

“I am.”

“Claire changed the plan.”

“What plan?”

“Locker isn't final storage.”

My heart pounded.

“What does that mean?”

“She knew Richard might find out.”

“Where is the evidence?”

“Key opens locker. Locker tells you where.”

Footsteps sounded behind us.

Evan drew a weapon.

Marcus stared at him.

“You had a gun?”

“Not the time.”

We moved again.

A bullet struck the stone wall.

Then sirens sounded.

Real ones.

Loud.

Approaching fast.

The men behind us retreated.

Evan had apparently triggered an emergency alert the moment the first SUV appeared.

Within minutes, county deputies and an ambulance flooded the church property.

Calvin survived.

The bullet passed through his shoulder without hitting an artery.

But the attack changed everything.

There was no longer any question whether Richard Vale would use violence.

We gave statements.

Federal investigators arrived before we left.

Not local.

Federal.

Priya had contacted the U.S. Attorney's Office while we were meeting Calvin.

The lead investigator was Special Agent Maya Chen.

She listened to Calvin from his hospital bed, took possession of the flash drive, and ordered the contents duplicated under evidence protocol.

Then she looked at me.

“We should open the locker today.”

I nodded.

“Agreed.”

“You will not touch anything inside.”

“Understood.”

“And the children remain somewhere secure.”

“Absolutely.”

When I called Noah, he answered on the first ring.

“Are you okay?”

My throat tightened.

“Yes.”

“You took forever.”

“I know.”

“Did somebody get hurt?”

I closed my eyes.

“How did you know?”

“You sound like Mom used to sound when she was trying not to scare us.”

That hurt.

“Calvin was shot.”

Silence.

“Is he alive?”

“Yes.”

“Did Richard do it?”

“We don't know who ordered it.”

“But you think he did.”

“Noah.”

“You think he did.”

I leaned against the hospital wall.

“Yes.”

He was quiet.

Then he whispered, “Come back.”

“I will.”

“Now?”

“Soon.”

I wanted to say yes.

Instead, I told him the truth.

“I have to go somewhere first.”

“The locker.”

“Yes.”

He took a shaky breath.

“Okay.”

Then, before hanging up, he said, “Daniel?”

“Yeah?”

“Don't die.”

I couldn't answer for a second.

“I won't.”

Union Station was crowded.

Commuters moved through the concourse while federal agents blended into the background.

Locker 314 stood in an older corridor near the eastern platform.

I had walked past it countless times.

Never noticed it.

Agent Chen photographed the key.

Then she handed me gloves.

“You insert it. I open the door.”

My hand shook despite myself.

The brass key slid into the lock.

Turned.

Click.

Agent Chen opened locker 314.

Inside was a red backpack.

Nothing else.

I recognized it instantly.

Claire's.

She had carried it during our college hiking trips.

The sight of it nearly brought me to my knees.

Agent Chen removed it carefully.

Inside were three items.

A sealed envelope with my name.

A small digital recorder.

And a children's book.

The Velveteen Rabbit.

Lily's favorite.

I stared.

“Why would she put that there?”

Agent Chen opened the book carefully.

Several pages had been cut out in the center.

Inside was a second key.

A silver one.

Attached to it was a paper tag.

HARBOR SAFE DEPOSIT.

Marcus exhaled.

“Private vault company.”

Agent Chen held up my envelope.

“Do you consent to opening this here?”

“Yes.”

She cut the seal.

Claire's handwriting covered four pages.

My vision blurred immediately.

Daniel,

If you're reading this, then one of two things happened. Either I finally became brave enough to tell you everything, or I ran out of time.

I'm sorry if it's the second.

I stopped reading.

Marcus put a hand on my shoulder.

I continued.

Claire explained that Michael had uncovered systematic fraud inside Vale Development.

He had planned to expose it.

He died before he could.

She spent years quietly rebuilding his evidence.

Then she discovered something worse.

Vanessa had accessed Michael's personnel file repeatedly in the month before his death.

Vanessa had also requested his travel schedule.

And after his death, she received a $2 million “performance distribution” from a company controlled by her father.

Claire believed it was payment.

Not for murder.

For silence.

The next paragraph made my hands shake.

I didn't tell you because you loved her.

I kept hoping I was wrong.

Then Vanessa came to my hospital room and asked me whether Michael had left any copies of his work files.

I lied.

She smiled and told me that people who obsess over the past sometimes lose the future too.

Daniel, I became afraid for my children.

I lowered the paper.

“God.”

Marcus whispered, “Keep going.”

The final page was shorter.

If I die before this is finished, protect Noah and Lily first.

Evidence second.

Justice third.

In that order.

Do not turn Noah into a soldier.

He will try.

Do not let him.

He is a child.

Please remind him.

And tell Lily I knew she would keep the key safe because she always hides important things in the pocket closest to her heart.

I laughed through tears.

Agent Chen looked away, giving me privacy.

Then I reached the final lines.

There is one more truth in the vault.

It concerns Lily.

It will hurt.

But she deserves the truth someday.

I trust you to know when.

Love them when I can't.

Claire.

My hands went numb.

Noah was Michael's biological son.

Everyone knew that.

But the words “one more truth” and “concerns Lily” opened a terrible space in my mind.

Agent Chen sealed the letter.

“We go to Harbor.”

I barely heard her.

All I could think was that Claire had spent her final months preparing for her own death.

Preparing for violence.

Preparing for betrayal.

And somehow, even then, she had still been thinking about whether Noah should be allowed to remain a child.

We were leaving the station when my phone rang.

Priya.

I answered.

Her first words stopped me cold.

“Daniel, Vanessa is here.”

“What?”

“She found the apartment.”

My heart slammed against my ribs.

“Are the children safe?”

“Yes. Security hasn't let her upstairs.”

Then I heard shouting behind Priya.

Vanessa.

“Daniel!”

My blood froze.

Priya's voice sharpened.

“She has a court order.”

“What court order?”

“A petition challenging your guardianship.”

I stopped walking.

“And Daniel?”

May you like

“What?”

“Her father has filed an emergency claim alleging you kidnapped Noah and Lily.”
